  1. If we are talking about being realistic here, then FT has a point. We are being taught about how we can reduce global warming though means that won't severely effect our day to day lives.

Producing vehicles that have lower emissions is something that has been part of the transport developmental footprint for some time and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels will also make a difference but I find it difficult to think it realistic to have people not consume meat and any government thoughtful enough to entertain the fact would be removed from office at the next election.

I think there are too many people out there who don't really care enough for the environment to implement the changes necessary to make a difference in our lifetime and that is where the battle needs to be won. \:\(

  2. ShayDn,

I don't think any Insurance companies will cover off-piste. I may be wrong but I haven't found any myself. Insurance companies will also have very vague definitions of where you are insured and where you are not.

Even in the trees between two pistes is considered off piste with all the companies I used to deal with. The only thing I can suggest is that if you need medical assistance, get back onto a groomed area before calling so that the site report specifically indicates you are not off piste when injured or needing assistance. You will almost always need to mention that you will be skiing /snowboarding too as that is another 'small print' point that is essential to mention.

If you find one that covers you 'off piste' please let us know.

  3. Last year, when I lived in Melbourne, I had the Sea Shepard 'pirate boat' Robert Hunter moored around the corner from my apartment and it was a shame to see all the 'dedicated individuals' who clearly had been with the organisation for quite some time just loitering around for months, no purpose, not knowing when they were going to leave, when the ship would be re-registered, when they would get out of Melbourne.

If the Sea Shepard was on organisation protecting the sea, and its members of the same belief, surely there are other issues on the ocean that need attention that could be assisted by these fine individuals.

I am over the whole issue, having to put up with hearing about it every day, the aussie media begging for a story especially when there are much larger issues that communities face within Australia and countries face all over the world...but I guess they aren't going to sell papers.

I don't necessarily agree that killing animals is a good thing either.

  4. Each to their own in regard to being annoyed that you have to wait for huge queues or are being shoved onto the lift but personally I get annoyed.

Although everyone pays for their lift ticket, I think it is inconsiderate to intentionally only have one person in a Gondala when there are other people who have also paid for a lift ticket and then have to wait excessive amounts of time.

Skiing and boarding are all about having fun and enjoying oyurselves but I can think of nothing more frustrating than seeing a Gondola going up with only 1 person in it. It is also the responsibility of others to get into the lift with unklnown people...I mean, they are not going to bite, maybe smell a bit ;\)

The only place in Hirafu I have seen a singles line is in the Gondola and it is inside the building where it is basically useless like had been mentioned previously.

  5. Try the Alpen for Sushi Mamabear. It is much better than Fujizushi.

Others to try are Rin, in the lower village near Yukoro Onsen, if you are up for gourmet then Kamimura (former chef from Tetsuya in Sydney) although it is pricey and not really for kids as it is an eight course degustation, Big Cliff is always good (ate there last night) or Niseko Cuisine http://www.snowjapan.com/e/niseko-guide/niseko-services.html#NisekoCuisine if you want someone to come in and do it all for you.

Since you were last here, things have inproved a lot and are getting better each year.

  6. During February mid terms in Meribel, 30mins in regular to get onto a Gondola. The smart people never come back to the base of the resort until the end of the day otherwise you just wait and wait.

At least they have their stuff together in terms of outside modern ski and board holders, not like Higashi or Annupuri here. The reason the lift lines are so long is because no-one enforces the 4 in a gondola thing and people can't fit enough skis/boards in the holders to use them to capacity.

Mamabear, I think it is also once you 'clock in' in the morning until the next full hour after you check through the gate so your example would be from 830 - 230 or 5 hours. You can do as many trips as possible from 830 to 929 and it is still only 1 hour.

  7. Moiwa was quite nice this morning, 20cm of new snow and perfect conditions for the lines through the trees...short but sweet. Not many people there but more than usual being a Sunday. Skiers right is still closed off the hooded quad but a little traverse will get you a long way. I will upload a short vid when I have time

The snow almost stopped this morning for about an hour but since 1030 it has been very heavy again...huge dry flakes and no wind at all.

Despite the poor visibility, conditions would be amazing anywhere below the treeline and tomorrow should be very nice again. Will hit up Higashiyama for a few hours and see how things go and again upload anything I get that is worthwhile.

  8. How do people go about doing this in cities or towns?

I have a flat roof and no land so to speak and due to my working hours, I don't clear when everyone else does. Local foreigners tell me that you can't clear onto the road or the footpath/sidewalk but I don't know if there is some etiquette I should be aware of.

At the moment, I am clearing it at night and just turfing it from the roof onto the road so it is cleared in the morning but I am pretty sure I am doing the wrong thing frown.gif

I have seen people shovelling from their roofs onto their neighbours but I am just not going to do that.

  9. Reading something like that always makes me wonder, especially being in Niseko, what will happen when this happens around here. Who knows what really happened before the aussie's got there but they did a fantastic job.

Yesterday, whilst riding in Hanazono for a few quick runs before work, I watched in amazement as scores of people ducked ropes and traversed across the face above Hanazono, all trying to get some fresh pow, 3 days after rain and 45cm of fresh snow on top. Something tragic will happen here sooner or later but there won't be enough experienced people around to help.

Very few people ride with gear and although not steep in many places, avalanches happen on 30 degree pistes all the time, especially when conditions aren't ideal.

For those who don't know what they are doing, please don't endanger others by riding above people on open faces, make sure you are prepared if you are going into the back country or even ducking the ropes. You never know when it will be you having to dig people out.
