  1. ok, i'm not a expert on this topic, but maybe i can provide some helpful info...

had a bad knee for a while... 5 years, wear one of those neoprene braces you buy from the sports stores... knee does a crackle pop every now and then that puts me on crutches... anyways, did it real good in december and now have had lots of visits to the doctor, physio and orthapaedic surgeon... acl is ruptured and meniscus is torn... going to have surgery this year - not the keyhole type...

the doctor told me that the brace i had been wearing for sports doesn't really do anything. people wear them (me included) feeling like they help... and if the placebo affect of it helping reassures you, then apparently, it's totally good to wear one, because feeling like there is an improvement is important, even if it's just placebo. anyways, i then noted that i had two crackle pop incidences while wearing a brace, once in wanaka and another in whistler while working.

so unless it's the full fancy brace that costs around $900 (in new zealand), then it's not actually going to be functionally helpful...

... but... if your knee is causing problems, have it looked at! i'm suprised that after visiting A&E twice in NZ and an on mountain physio... the hospital in japan and subsequently an orthapaedic surgeon in mizusawa that i was not properly diagnosed with an ACL injury, so now, as a result, 5 years (and many injuries later) i have a completely busted ACL and an fairly badly torn meniscus.

to properly get it checked out, you'll need an xray and mri (i only had an xray in japan, and i'm suprised that the orthapaedic surgeon didn't request an mri - but that might be because they cost about $600 to get... luckily, we have ACC in NZ)

seriously, get it checked out. i did this in december and i can barely walk at a fast pace now, so that puts surfing, skiing, curling and pretty much all sports out for me until i get surgery, and it sucks big time! i put up with it cos all the health professionals i saw said "well, there appears to be no ligament damage, use these crutches and you'll be fine", but this time round, my family said enough is enough, make sure they find out whats wrong.

can't wait for surgery! yay, i'm so happy :o) i don't mind the 2 nights in hospital, 6 weeks on crutches and 6 months rehabilitation at all :o)

  2. well, it's been a long time since i posted on snowjapan since leaving japan, but i just had to after reading this.

it's the same old tired whinging and whining about skiers by snowboarders and vice versa.

its just like the surfing and bodyboarding thing.

    get over it.

i have very good friends who do both. we ride together, respect each other and have a whole lot of fun.

don't waste your time thinking you're better than someone else because of what they choose to stick on their feet.

  3. well, i just had my last official working day (with classes to teach etc) at school - still gotta go in on monday for no particular reason except i have to. yep, i'll admit i cried a bit when i had to do my speech... funny how i've been looking forward to this day for so long, and now it just feels surreal to have actually finished... i will really miss some of my kids - i always get along with the strange, but funny ones!

...sounds like we'll have to keep track of who's coming so we don't get over booked in canada \:D

  4. i'm not an expert, i just drink stuff if i like it \:D

i must say that adding water and ice for me eliminates that volatile (in the scientific sense) kinda alchohol vapourish effect you get with straight spirits when drunk straight and i can better enjoy the flavour. having said that, i had an excellent tequila shot a wee while back, it really did taste good!

  5. i had a whiskey and water at a little bar in hanamaki last weekend... that's where i decided that i really liked it... a nice glenfiddich special something or other...

this is the girl who didn't drink beer or winein nz and only liked sweet drinks...

huh? what are you talking about? why would everybody at the enkai hate me? i thought they really like me... i really like them... so they make fun of me by calling me a big drinker... but one of the other teachers is the heavy drinker ;\)
  6. who would have thought that it would taste so good and refreshing? i only drank it partly out of desperation because there was no other option besides asahi super dry at our school enkais... but i'm enjoying one right now... which is probably the reason why i would start such a dumb thread lol.gif

  7. 350yen bento... only the teachers can buy them... we change companies every month to share the love, apparently - generally pretty good... my favourite part of the day at school is lunch... 4th period classes are a killer cos the go from 11:50 to 12:45... i usually have to have second breakfast so i can last till then...

  8. he he! lol.gif

before the 2005/2006 season, i've still got to do the 2005 season \:D

life looks good these days - although it always did!

    targets...

    1. hopefully pass stage 1 in nz

    2. try out the halfpipe if my bung leg doesn't crap out on me (only tried it briefly one afternoon with a bung leg but it was heaps of fun)

    3. complete avo stage 1

    4. ski more aggressively - just finished this year's ski movie and i always look like i'm out for a stroll...

    5. have lots and lots of fun

as for the 2005/2006 season in canada, dunno yet, gotta do the nz one first

    ;\)

  9. i want the best stuff, on sale, usually at least half price - and it's not that difficult, 80% of all my gear i bought pretty cheap... although the beacons weren't on sale, we got them through a friend on a pro deal \:D ... so no real brand loyalty, companies don't make any money from people like me and captain stag!

i got the same skis as toque but a year or so older... i love them, boy they can go fast!

  10. makes me feel old checking the 26-30 bracket shifty.gif

i think if you have been 26 for less than 6 months, you should be allowed to tick the age bracket below it ;\)

most of my japanese ski friends are in their early thirties... (a few in their late twenties, one or two in their early twenties...)
