  1. Yes, all that high tech jargon...

Tethering is what you're doing - your phone connection to provide your computer (or iPad) with an internet connection.

Jailbreaking - google 'jailbreaking iphone' and you'll get the idea.

That's good that you're unlocked in HK and tethering is officially supported. That's how it should be everywhere.

  2. Thanks, that's good info, GG. So basically you need to have a data plan, not just mopera connection. Just taking a look up on the website their pay-as-you-go pake-hodai simple plan might be workable for me. I wouldn't use a flat rate plan as I just don't need to connect away from my computer that much.

Tethering is definitely the go if it's doable and not too costly to what you're already using.

  3. MB I would see if there is a good TCM (chinese medicine) practitioner in your area, or even aryuveda. You will be able to do a lot for your liver health with help from these, your detox may be a little too extreme, it might be better for you to go a little more slowly, so that you can still detox but have less extreme symptoms.

Jynxx I think you also need to take into account the liver condition alongside the 5 elements theory. If there is a lot of heat in the liver vs depletion (in TCM terms, not western terms) different advice might be better, also depending on whatever the balance of the other organs are too. For instance, there is a chinese formula that helps take rising liver heat out of the head (headaches), which can work well depending on if the individual's condition fits what those herbs work with. For another person it may not help. I'm not sure if oats are necessarily so good in this particular situation if there is a lot of heat going on as they are a 'warming grain' (in TCM terms) which may also be why MB isn't attracted to them.

Tumors etc, AFAIK come from blood stagnation (in TCM terms), so TCM or aryvedic herbs that cleanse and build the blood will also help, also the digestive system may not be handling the detox so well so you may also need herbs to support the spleen. But really (if you're interested in this at all) you'd need to see a good certified practitioner for a proper diagnosis of your own unique condition.

That being said, I agree with Jynxx - apple cider vinegar with 'the mother' is excellent stuff, though as always, you have to check it out to see if it works for you personally.

Organic tumeric could also be very helpful, this also is slightly cooling (in TCM terms), it's great for liver and digestion (Japanese often take this as a 'hangover cure'), and could help with the heat that's going on too...

If you're interested MB drop me a PM, I'll be happy to chat more about it.

Good for you! And good your friend is in good hands. I hope he does get in touch with some docs who view things in similar ways to those on that link I sent. I'm sure he must be emotionally worn down and could probably use emotional support from people like those guys who are trained for it. And - not just him, but for those around him too! It must be hard on everyone (including you).

    Take care and good luck.
  5. Sorry to hear that Jynxx.

Great to hear about your brother Snowhuntress, I know other people who have come back from death sentences too, and thanks guys for the well wishes re my sister.

Mitch - it's true that your friend might well die, but then again, the docs are only going on statistics and people don't always fit the bill. I can't say what will happen to your friend especially if things don't look good, but that being said I just don't believe in automatically believing someone has to die just cos the docs believe it so. People are more than statistics.

If your friend is interested in doing something to fight his illness, check out this place - a very progressive and supportive centre for cancer (and I assume leukemia too). Run by a very forward-thinking oncologist http://simontoncenter.com/index.html . I'm sure there are other places like this one.

  6. I've been watching the JAL situation very closely.

What would you do if you had JAL miles and had planned on using them later on in the year? I'm thinking I should book the flight ASAP - I'll have enough miles for my summer UK flight on the 10th, and using miles allows for date changes if I need them.

The JAL decision will be made mid-month, and there's a possibility of bankruptcy proceedings, - in which case I will assume that any flights people have paid for will be covered by insurance, but what about if they were paid for in miles?

Maybe I'm better off using the miles for my next Oz flight, which I hadn't wanted to do. Or maybe whatever I do I'm cactus if I don't fly in the next few days!

It seems that whatever they do they want to keep JAL flying, but.... suddenly the miles I've been saving for on my JAL credit card look like they could be on pretty thin ice....

  7. One thing - just because the docs say someone will die it doesn't necessarily mean that will happen. Be careful of believing a death sentence if it comes from someone outside of yourself as anything is possible. My sister is living proof of that. I don't know your friend's illness but my sister was supposed to die twice from brain cancer, docs had no hope for her and a year later she has no detectable cancer in her at all, and the docs are amazed. She still has a long road to recovery but it never occurred to her that she would die from it, she had the belief and will to get thru it.

I can't say what will happen in your friend's case but I just wanted to say that the docs aren't always right.

  8. Okay we seemed to sort that last bit out.

Krusty - thanks again - it took awhile to find someone I knew fluent enough to phone that number. Unfortunately the woman who answered didn't seem to even know what a Prius was. They didn't recommend anyone else. I asked my friend to phone again if it wasn't taihen to see if they could recommend someone, but for now it seems like a deadend. I also asked him to phone the Toyota dealer.

Midnightcharger, thanks again also - my friend's also going to follow up asking some car dealers on yahoo.

Computer Battery in the States is $134!!!!! But I don't think it will work with a Japanese model, since it has to sync up with the main computer which is in Japanese.... 10% of the cost of a new battery computer here! I'm sure we can eventually find a used battery computer here. Just a matter of if there's time. (My car is sitting at the toyota dealer and they're wondering how long it'll be there for!). One reconditioned battery I saw online in the US is the same price as a new battery here, so unless it's possible to find reconditioned batteries here there's no point thinking about buying from overseas for those!

I'll keep you guys posted on the hunt. At least now I have someone on board who's bilingual and is keen to help out, so hopefully something can be found soon.

  9. My friend who will call them is wondering what the correct nihongo for 'reconditioned' would be - as in 'reconditioned battery' or reconditioned parts?

    Anyone know?

    Thanks!

I think the computer if used would probably be okay, assuming it's working. But I think if I get a battery that's not new I'd want it to be reconditioned, (unless they're charging next to nothing so it's worth the risk.)

  10. Thanks MC, for all the very helpful research and advice.

I wonder if those NZ folk can recondition a Japanese language computer? Definitely worth looking into depending on what I can or can't find here.

Assuming reliable reconditioned batteries aren't to be found here, currently I'm leaning toward getting a new battery and trying to get a used battery computer.

Just to let you know - I got a new 12v battery not long before the main one died, and I'm sure the dealer is correct with the diagnosis on the issue, they took about a week to check it all thoroughly, and he sent a couple of photos to show that there had been electrical damage to the battery and computer. I don't know for sure about the corrosion, that is just a guess as to why the short may have happened.

Thanks for the tips on dealers selling stuff on the auctions. My nihongo illiteracy prevents me from doing much there myself but I'll try and hire someone to help out.

  11. Thanks midnight and krusty.

Midnight - Thanks. In the States you can get reconditioned (not simply 'used') batteries. I was hoping that they could be found here too. I'm a bit iffy on a used battery without being reconditioned, however a battery computer from a wreck might be worth the risk.

If anyone could locate a nihongo Prius forum for me that's a great place to ask. I assume some exist, well there are certainly English ones and there has to be lots of prius otaku here.

The quoted price for the parts are 135,000 each - ie battery 135,000 and battery computer 135,000. Even if I just got a new battery, I could surely save with a used computer. Normally they don't need to change the computer as well, but there was some kind of strange short that happened (the cables need replacing too). I suspect there was corrosion in the battery which caused it, which apparently isn't uncommon on the older cars.

Krusty - thanks. The dealer I'm using will do the labor if I provide used parts, but he won't source them for me. I don't have much choice since the car is stranded there. Even another dealer nearby had said the same thing. I guess they don't want to support used parts in case there's an issue. But at least this dealer is willing to do the labor (not expensive) for used parts.

Do you have a phone number for your dealer that you'd be willing to pass on? Cos if so I'll get someone to call him and see if he can source anything.

And I'm totally with you on getting the dealer to do the labor if I decide to go ahead with it. maybe not worth it at the cost of getting both parts new, though at the same time it may wind up costing me that to get another car (with shaken etc), so I'm really hoping on a cheaper way.

    Thanks guys.

Thursday - sorry, can't wait that long, need to sort it out way before next year!

  12. Ger, many people play a musical instrument and sing at the same time, hell, I do that for a living! I do get your point though - of course some things become too complex to play (or sing) if doing both at the same time.

But trying to sing well while you're out of breath from dancing is another story! Britney and Madonna are all about visual entertainment for whoever might want to see them. They're not about highly skilled musical art.

  13. It must be hard to sing well while doing a full-on dance act. That being said, I'm not sure Britney can sing well regardless, (and I'm not about to start listening to her to try and find out either). however Madonna can at least sing in tune, so if she's lip syncing some of her show I would say it would be more to do with it being too hard to dance/sing at the same time.

I think I remember seeing that vid of britney posted on an audio forum; in light of the lip synching stuff, I'm surmising she's not trying to sound good there, just stay in sync with the song.
