  1. OK, we're going to give this a go.... as a trial run, from today you can add an Avatar image to all of your posts on the Snow Japan Forums. (Basically a little image that appears under your name on the left hand side.)

To select an Avatar, here's what you do:

    MY PROFILE

    VIEW/UPDATE PROFILE

    SELECT A DIFFERENT AVATAR IMAGE

From there, you can either choose one of the (not very exciting) default Avatars (sorry!), or upload your own image. That image must already have a unique URL on the web for you to be able to use it.

    * jpg or gif images are fine;

    * if you are using your own, please make them up to 70x70 pixels in size

We want this to be "fun". So, just a few groundrules to start this off:

Please don't post anything rude or anything that might cause problems, and no "advertising". If things get out of hand, we'll just have to turn the feature off - so your cooperation please! \:\)

    Thanks!

  3. http://www.snowjapan.com/e/about/questionnaire2004.html

Our new Questionnaire for this season is now online. Please take a few moments to go and fill it in. Each year, the results of our questionnaires help us improve Snow Japan. Many of the ideas and new functionality that has been developed for the site has been done because of feedback we have got from readers.... so your comments do matter, and we do listen!

We also compile the results and comments and pass some of those on to some resorts in Japan - and so this is a chance that you have to let your voice be heard (there is 1 part of the Questionnaire specificially for "Comments to Resorts").

This year, everyone who fills out the Questionnaire (and also fills in their name and email address) will be entered into another Prize Draw - and 5 winners chosen in June of this year will be sent some new Smith Goggles.

So, please do help us make Snow Japan better - the questionnaire should only take a moment or two to fill in....

    Many thanks

On Mountain GPS Tracking Device Introduced at Copper

Those skiers and riders obsessed with how many vertical feet they conquer in a day or season now have the perfect tool. SlopeTracker was recently introduced at Copper Mountain, providing a new and unique self-diagnostic tool for techno-junkies. On any given day a guest of the resort can track their number of runs, vertical feet, speed, calories burned, distance travelled and more via this new GPS tracking system. And, at the end of the day they get a colour print out detailing their accomplishments.

SlopeTracker rentals are available at guest services locations in all three Copper villages. Participants get a GPS unit that collects all of their data. Each participant is then rated against other snow riders at Copper with ratings of difficulty and skill score. At the end of the day those numbers are calculated and printed to a colour map for them to bring home. Prices begin at $15 per day for season pass holders and $18 for non-season pass holders on weekdays, $20 and $25 on weekends, respectively.

Copper resident Frank Walter is no stranger to conquering large sums of vertical feet. Over the past four winters, Walter has skied the slopes of Copper an average of 120 days each season, and has logged approximately six million vertical feet each of those years. Walter is 81 years of age. This season he'll be equipped with a jacket donated by Marker® to keep him warm, and his own SlopeTracker device to track his progress while putting the program through a rigorous test.

"I'm anxious to try it out," said Walter. "It sounds pretty cool and I'm sure it will be very accurate. Just don't call to ask me about my progress between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. I'll be on the hill."

New Quad For Fassa Valley Part of Overall Upgrade

The Catinaccio ski area above Vigo di Fassa has a new quad chair with bubble cover this season on the Pian Pecei-Pra Martin. The new Doppelmayr lift is just a component in a niche marketing exercise to emphasise the family friendly nature of neighbouring Pozza and Vigo di Fassa and their traditional natures, differing from other Fassa valley resorts such as Canazei, on the huge Sella Ronda circuit.

For the first time this season a single daily ski ticket is available for the Catinaccio area and the slightly smaller Buffaure area across the valley above Pozza, the two linked by an efficient ski bus service. Buyers of the new ticket, which costs 26.5 Euro high season, also receive a 50% discount on night skiing in the Aloch ski stadium.

Also new this season is a ski path linking the two chairlifts serving the Tomba and Cigolde runs, plus ever improving children's snow parks, especially located in sunny positions and with additional services such as child collection direct from hotels on request.

    ------------

Scotland Fully Open This Weekend, Including Glencoe

All five of Scotland's ski centres will be open this weekend, including, conditions permitting, Glencoe which only a few months ago had planned to remain 'moth balled' for this season until a public outcry and offers of volunteer support caused a change of heart from the ownership. Roads around the ski area including the Main Glasgow - Fort William road were closed earlier this week with lorries jack knifing on the fresh snow.

Glencoe and Nevis Range on the West have caught the best of the latest snow although Cairngorm, which had some of the best conditions in December, has had more fresh falls and will open all five sectors at the weekend all being well.

In the east Glenshee and the Lecht have had the least of the fresh falls to date, but both have adequate cover. Low temperatures and wind chill factors means that skiers and boarders should be prepared for very cold, but hopefully clear, weather.

    ------------

Giant Ski and Board Park Opens in Hong Kong

Artificial surface ski slope specialists Briton Engineering have installed 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) of the company's Snowflex material at Ocean Park in Aberdeen - Hong Kong Island.

Engineers from the company travelled over to meet the previously dispatched shipment in late November and completed installation shortly before Christmas. The four slopes include a Freestyle Ski jump, new school ski and snowboard jump, an adrenalin tube run and a junior tube run.

Opening day on December 18th was a "raving success" according to the organisers with demonstrations from the freestyle jump by pro skiers and boarders. The slopes will open again at Ocean Park over the Chinese New Year, beginning 31st January.

    ------------

    Canyons Has New Terrain Park

Skiers looking for The Canyons' award-winning terrain park this season will find it at a new location and at a higher elevation - providing more consistent natural snowfall assisted by a new snowmaking system for the park.

Freeskiers and riders will access the new park at the Park City, Utah resort by Snow Canyon Express where they will find more than 30 features throughout the 16-acre park. On-mountain dining takes a step up at The Canyons Resort. Lookout Cabin will now feature a new, full-service bar within the restaurant. Located a top Lookout Peak, Lookout Cabin provides stunning views of the Wasatch along with table-served meals daily.
