  1. If you want rocking mountains with good snow awesome jaw droping steeps head to the interior of Canada. Red Mountain is a small version of Jackson hole that doesnt get skied out as fast plus the Back Counrty kicks ass. PS when they tell you its hard it is sometimes you have to drop off something before you can ski. Fernie 4 massive bowls that link into massive bowls. Do the line in fish bowl named 10000 turns off to the skiers left side of the peak its 3000 to 4000 vert to the cat track starts with a steep chute and funnels into a steep bowl. epic. Whitewater hike skiers left of the lift hkie ten mins ski down to the rode hitch a ride back can be done until about 11 olcock. Last run of the day we take turns picking up the lucky fu kers who got to ride a natural terrain park and ski steep trees and meadows all around 35 to 45 degrees.

Canada rocks where ever you go.

  3. I think that Arai could have positioned they main lifts better indeed. Put it up on skiers left and you get a whole lot more.

Your right about patrol lots dont have a clue but the guys at Arai can out ski a lot of people, same with Cortina. I know that most of those guys would rather ski it than close it. I think that they are just doing there job.

That said.... At North American resorts we blast here they dont. I think it makes a big difference if you cant blast. (does anyone know why i was told that it was illegal somethingto do with laws after the war) Most of the places that have problems with slides have these inplace air gas explosion tubes, thus they cant activily control outsides those areas effectivily. Take for example the Lake Taos region. 3 days storms like Japan but they blast the crap out of the mountain after and during. Same is done at Jackson hole where people are known to have jumped into the damm holes.

Do Japanese resorts have a lot to learn yes I think that they do. But as anything in Japan its a slow change. If I was to change something I would change have blasting going on.

Hey one goo thing about all this closing off when it is safe you get it all to yourself. That doesnt happen too much anymore back in N. America.

  4. Your right about that day it was safe Ocean the top parts of the runs through the trees were nice but the bottoms were heavy at least for the 1080s I was using. My point being is that it is more complex then we think. Back home we sometimes have to wait for hours and or a day or 2 for things to open up. The patrol sometimes want time to blast or let the snow pack sit for a day, or if its still snowing they mught just close it down completly. At places like Fernie and whitewater if you duck a closed rope when they have it closed for what ever reason you will loose sking priviliges for a year.

Does that mean that they could opne more here sure they could. In the last 4 years Cortina has closed more than they have opened. 2 old pow runs to the lower parking area are gone and so are the trees. But with people getting out there and pushing the bounderies and doing it safe and uninjuryed than the resorts will open more they have to, the trend has been set. I stand by Arai they do pretty well with what they were given although placing the lift gondola on the skiers left mountain would have offered a lot more.

  5. Yes Ocean you are right about that but 2 years ago in simalr conditions I set off a few small slides. The slides slowed and became self building snowballs one went onto the main course and was a good 25 kilos. Iwas lucky enough to get it stopped by bodychecking no more than 5 times.

At Cortina when I want to ski the trees I bring my beacon and ski with my gear.

As for the patrol the previous year they allowed tree sking but for some reason they killed it. They are tring to market themselves as a family resort.

Last year I sae the after effects of a huge avalanche in the trees at Norikura. The power of the slide went to ground for 500meters i ripped trees from the ground and the debris was like ice. My advice ski with a friend and bring the gear when you are somewhere patrol arent.

  7. Ok I agree about some resorts being bckwards about somethings, but as for Arai and some other places you have to take some things into account.

Number one amount of snowfall and different temps make the area a little dangerous at times. I think they do a good job opening up what they have. If you look at Arai in an objective way you will see a lot of terrain traps where if it does go your fu...ked. Plus under the gondola ther is one mother of a cliff where people have died.

Also the park departments here dictate some what how much terrain you can use. When I worked at Kawaba in Gumma 8 years ago it was about 30 to 40 of the mountain and the Gumma park guys would come and check. Sometimes we take for granted what we could ski back home and think that it applies here. Now wait think, Im from toronto but spent winters bumming the interior mountains of British Columbia. The good thing about the interior is the relitivily same weather all winter. Sking Out of bouns is done daily and we pack down the snow making a more stable snow pack. Here that just does not happen outside of say Niseko ( but relitivily same weather patterns there all winter). I forgot to ask they dont blast here and they usally use gas bombs in fixed places so the control work is harder. Relax though everyone complains about the lack of trails open with powder but in Japan the compition for powder is still not that bad. compard with Canada going up the lift at the begining of the day knowing everyone was in a race to make tracks here you can still find stashes weeks after storms. Peace love abd Powder. :p

  8. I twisted me knee once of a Jump In Sutton Quebec but I have 2 friends that injuried themselves horriblily.

First one Friend Darby was riding with us at Sun peaks. _Guy was having a bad day first off his new binding is missing a bolt before the first run goes and fixes it. Then he was riding down a small noll into a small valley on the other side is a bigger noll both Dary and and another boarder friend of mine wanted to do oppisite things darby wanted to go up one side and the other guy up the other. when they saw each other they both zigged and the nose of their boards caught their shins. Darby got a boot top compound frachure mean right in half. the other guy lore both ACLs. 1 year for darby and 2 monthes for the other guy.

Next one same season sking a run that was marginal for snow a friend mick crashed and rolled. during the roll mick put the tail of his ski to the binding through ho groin no joke. Lucky for mick he was with friends and they got the patrol, they were freaked when they got to the bottom. The head patroler gord not only saved his life he saved his leg. He took him down without taking the ski out to a waiting helo.

  9. I dont know of an indoor place in kyoto is there. If so enlighten me. I no of one in Hyogo its so so If you want to jump so so.

You can catch a day trip bus from Kyoto station to any resort in Gifu Wings, Dynaland, Takasu and so on. You can book it through Alpen its a chain sports store they are everywhere. Look in the Japanese papers and soon they will have pull out ads. That should tell you the location nearest to you. There is a big store called Mitsuhashi Sports on Oike dori - Karasuma Oike station. But I find them to be expensive but they have the biggest selection in Kyoto. Also if you have access to a car go route 171 near the minami kyoto Meishin Junction there is a huge Alpen I find good deals there. Or go down to Osaka Namaba area and there are 2 gaint stores, I think they will pay the train fee if you buy something over a certain price. The stores arre Sportica and (Himareya in katakana).

Kyoto day trips Biwako Valley and a couple of resorts in the Kosei area of Shiga can be hit and home for dinner but for the same price you can do a bus trip to Gifu. Shiga resorts you have to take a Gondola up to the resort which costs about 2000 yen before you buy the ski pass plus the bus from the statoin another 400 yen each way.

i can give you lots more keep asking

  10. I dont want to let the secret out but When the conditions are prefect nothing beats the little reasort in the conner cortina. 2 years ago they had rocking jumps but they went family lst year and killed them. For a little extra you can get a pass to Norikura too and they have 2 pipes and some good jumps. Norikuras front side would be a dream to ski but youll get caught if you do. Also you can find a 20 foot cliff there if you look for it.
