  1. not really ads at the large cinemas in canada, not where i go anyway.

more trailers and plugs for the snack bar, courtesy announcements about turning your phone off/being quiet etc.

there is usually only about 10 minutes of stuff before the movie here which is a lot different from other places ive been where you can turn up at your own leisure (within reason) and still catch the movie.

i remember the roppongi virgin cinema has a terrible english teaching segment before the movie which consists of some gai jin speaking really slowly.

  3. bluebottles are nasty things.

i remember my brother threw seaweed at me once not realising (i assume... confused.gif ) that there were about 10 blue bottles tangled up in it. got stung all around my neck and shoulders.

my nearest death experience though was getting hit by a motorcycle in bali about 15 or so years ago. was rushed to hospital in a very crowded passing car.

  4. i didnt reserve and i was already in japan (staying for 4 weeks or so) so my schedule was fairly flexible. i just rolled up and bought a ticket (in cash) so im afraid i am absolutley no help in buying off the phone.

i did mainly day trips during the week. i guess it would be a little harder to time your trip and more necessary to reserve a bus ticket in advance if you were flying in, taking the bus and had accomodation booked for that night.

    sorry i cant help!

we preferred the xmas icecream pudd, rough recipe as follows:

ingredients: good quality ice cream, preferably two or more flavours.
chocolate (maltesers are great, also chocolate freckles, & pretty much any chocolate bar you like, as long as it's chopped up)
some people like chopped nuts too.

    method:
soften icecream by leaving out of the freezer for a little while, not too long as it the taste will change when you refreeze it.

    mix chopped chocolates into icecream.

layer into a pudding basin, cover in foil & stick it in the freezer to harden.

icecream & chocolate. who would want anything more after a huge roast meal?

(& the aussies out there may know the icecream chain 'cold rock', they pretty much do the chocolate/icecream mixeroo as their selling point. my family likes to think we invented it, but then so do most of my friends' families, too)..
that sounds amazing. a good alternative! i'm not a fan of christmas pudding at all.
there is a coldrock creamery along terrigal beach. mmm.
theyve just opened one in roppongi hills. havent been though.

i made pumpkin pie for christmas. it was really nice.
  6. i just posted this in the other thread.

you can take a bus from shinjuku-to the hakuba resorts (goryu and happo).

    the schedule is:

    http://www.alpico.jp/access/express/hakuba_shinjuku/index_e.html

and it is 8500 yen return.

ive done the overnight a few times. leaves at around 10:30pm and drops you off at a road below goryu (you have to carry your stuff up a hill) at 5:30am.

its not recommended for everyone. its a long ride (2 hours or so longer than the other departure times) and if you get a crowded bus its bloody uncomfortable. but it atleast gets you there for a full day of riding.

the shelter with the locker rooms and bathrooms at goryu is open fairly early (as far as i remember) so you can atleast be inside until the hill opens.

oh and i also dont speak japanese and managed fairly easily. the bus drops you off and there is a Goryu sign pointing you up the hill.

  7. you can bring boards on the bus (well not ON the bus, but stashed below) ive taken the overnight bus from shinjuku several times with my board. and im never the only one. boards, golf clubs, skiis etc

i DO know however that they are really anal about taking oversized luggage such as surfboards, skis, snowboards on the airport express buses. but ive never had a problem taking stuff on the highway express between shinjuku and hakuba goryu.

    coolboarderguy...

not recommended for everyone but it atleast gets you a full day riding if you want to do a day trip.
