  1. Today has been interesting.

At the top of my road, the police set up a radar/speeding thing, with people caught having tp turn left into my road. I could see it all from where I am and it made for an interesting experience. The speed limit on the stretch of road they were catching people on is 40kmh, and it is one of those places where pretty much everyone is probably going 55-60kmh, and being safe with it. 40kmh is a joke.

Anyways, they were literally catching and booking tons of people (with everyone busting the linit, they had good choice). The only thing preventing them stopping more people is the space where the cars can park while the criminal drivers fill in their details. Even so, It was a pretty constant stream of people getting stopped. They had about 4 police taking all the details and it was a pretty smooth operation.

I would say they were booking well over 50 people an hour. If all of those were going to have to pay 10,000 yen, say, that's 500,000 yen an hour and they are still busy doing it now with no shortage of people to catch!

Not a bad little earner for the cops hey?!

  2. OK so it won't be long before things start getting hot and I am needing some cooling down machine for a room at home. I want something better than an electric fan. But I don't want to have some outside part to an airconditioner put on the outside of the house either.

I suppose ideally I want something that is as good as, or nearly as good as, an airconditioner, but more 'portable'.

    Does such a thing exist!

  3. Dike time!

    --

Plans have been announced to build a makeshift dike to help prevent further damage from aftershocks or tsunami at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The joint headquarters of the government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. aims to complete the dike and other preventative measures by July, as it believes aftershocks and tsunami are the greatest threats to ongoing efforts to end the crisis.

Based on experts' advice, TEPCO is envisioning the possibility that a magnitude-8 level aftershock and seven- to eight-meter-high tsunami could occur east of the March 11 quake's focal area.

If such disasters took place, tsunami are expected to approach from the southeast of the plant and enter an area that is four meters above sea level. The waves are then expected to move further upward, flooding the areas around the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors--located 10 meters above sea level--in water one to two meters deep.

TEPCO plans to build a makeshift dike, one to two meters high and 500 meters long, 10 meters above sea level in the southeast part of the plant's grounds.

The makeshift dike will comprise metal wires bent into basket shapes and containing stones. Impermeable sheets will be sandwiched between the containers to prevent tsunami from proceeding deep into the plant.

TEPCO aims to complete the makeshift dike by the middle of June.
