Yes living in the countryside a car is close to top of the list of things to get!
-
Today has been interesting.
At the top of my road, the police set up a radar/speeding thing, with people caught having tp turn left into my road. I could see it all from where I am and it made for an interesting experience. The speed limit on the stretch of road they were catching people on is 40kmh, and it is one of those places where pretty much everyone is probably going 55-60kmh, and being safe with it. 40kmh is a joke.
Anyways, they were literally catching and booking tons of people (with everyone busting the linit, they had good choice). The only thing preventing them stopping more people is the space where the cars can park while the criminal drivers fill in their details. Even so, It was a pretty constant stream of people getting stopped. They had about 4 police taking all the details and it was a pretty smooth operation.
I would say they were booking well over 50 people an hour. If all of those were going to have to pay 10,000 yen, say, that's 500,000 yen an hour and they are still busy doing it now with no shortage of people to catch!
Not a bad little earner for the cops hey?!

OK so it won't be long before things start getting hot and I am needing some cooling down machine for a room at home. I want something better than an electric fan. But I don't want to have some outside part to an airconditioner put on the outside of the house either.
I suppose ideally I want something that is as good as, or nearly as good as, an airconditioner, but more 'portable'.
Does such a thing exist!

I see, I think.

Whatever previous Christmases have been, it's basically a risk isn't it. Bordering start of the snow dumps. If you do go then... we always hope for Christmas dumps unfortunately doesn't always happen.

Dike time!
--
Plans have been announced to build a makeshift dike to help prevent further damage from aftershocks or tsunami at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
The joint headquarters of the government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. aims to complete the dike and other preventative measures by July, as it believes aftershocks and tsunami are the greatest threats to ongoing efforts to end the crisis.
Based on experts' advice, TEPCO is envisioning the possibility that a magnitude-8 level aftershock and seven- to eight-meter-high tsunami could occur east of the March 11 quake's focal area.
If such disasters took place, tsunami are expected to approach from the southeast of the plant and enter an area that is four meters above sea level. The waves are then expected to move further upward, flooding the areas around the Nos. 3 and 4 reactors--located 10 meters above sea level--in water one to two meters deep.
TEPCO plans to build a makeshift dike, one to two meters high and 500 meters long, 10 meters above sea level in the southeast part of the plant's grounds.
The makeshift dike will comprise metal wires bent into basket shapes and containing stones. Impermeable sheets will be sandwiched between the containers to prevent tsunami from proceeding deep into the plant.
TEPCO aims to complete the makeshift dike by the middle of June.

Dunno, they have a fair bit of competition from The Earth at the moment.

Whichever you want.
In our area, you need to put your garbage in a see-through bag, that you have to buy at the local stores.
Ones for businesses are nearly double the price.
Can someone explain to me the reason for this? I just don't get it. ie. why we need the bags and why ones for businesses are so much more expensive.

Didn't things usually kick off mid-December rather than the more recent New Year. Perhaps rose-tinted glasses, but things do seem to generally be later than they used to be.

Will try to find some for Minakami.

That seems to be the opinion of a few people I know with places... things will happen later. The last few years bookings and the like had been coming in earlier and earlier each season, but they will probably take a shunt back to autumn and the run up to the season this time round.
-
It will take at least 2-3 months for the Fukushima plant to become 安定 (safe?) and then 10 years for the whole lot to be sorted out. According to NHK news tonight.

I'm on that last 24 season too. Like it. As usual need to take it all in quickly.

Almost comes across as.... arrogant, doesn't it.

Seems to be the case.

Like many I will be out for a while in August but before then I hope to have a good few weekends out and about.
Keen to get over to a few parts of Nagano that I don't know so well yet, down south and west over there.

Perhaps they are all April Fools jokes.

Going to be a fine warm one today apparently.

Anyone on here ever get to play that Virtual Boy thing?
It seemed such a bad idea.

Great shots Mike. Keep on keep on having fun!

I THINK the main ones are
6:20am > arrive 7:30am
and
9:15am > arrive 10:45
I have had a quick look but can't find much, sorry.
It's as if they don't want people to know!
Personally because of lots of disruption in Gunma because of "the stuff", I would phone and ask (Kan-etsu bus 0278-24-5151)
Hope you have fun and take that cheese.
