They are probably used to you rigor - I found that sarcasm didn't go down well at first but they are used to it now. Strangers often don't get it. The less than perfect Japanese surely has something to do with that of course.

Where I work, people do their own cleaning up - guys do their own. They even make the green tea for some of the ladies from time to time. (Though I think that is to try and impress them more than anything else )

I'd very happily send my kids to Japanese elementary school. The kids there seem to actually enjoy it on the whole and it seems to be junior high when they start getting their character drained from them.
