  1. Asahikan in Yuzawa town is quite good, been there a few times. Although not reeeeally cheap, 7500 all in for bed and breakfast is not bad, and they can pick you up from station/drop you at the resort of your choice. lovely people, speak english, and make their own pizza if you ask them! dinner is a wee bit extra yen.

oh, should warn you, they have cats the size of small children

Check the Places to Stay section of the site for more info on Asahikan

  2. My question for you all out there is, why on earth are there no Snickers bar vending machines? Or for that matter, just your ordinary garden variety over the counter Snickers bars.

There is nothing quite like getting a quick choccy fix on the chairs in between runs (especially as no one talks to you here, you may as well stuff your face).

I am not advocating the wholesale introduction of vending machines here. Far be it from that. I would hate to turn a sharp bend and come across a random vending machine, looking not unlike the Tardis in the middle of nowehere, with no apparent source of power which plays "its a small world after all" when you put your money in.

But at the same time, with vending machines at a rate of 1 per square metre in Tokyo, it is hard to imagine how ski resort operators here have not in some form cottoned on to the idea.

Perhaps the purchase of a snickers bar on mountain is akin to the holy grail - no bugger is ever gonna find it (unless you are Monty Python).

For now, I will pre-purchase at the 7-11 as always, only to end up with a squashed and melted choccy bar from my never ending stacks in the pipe.

    Still, it tastes the same...right?

  3. mogski - never fear, 81 posts will get you a haiku.

    mogski, a man of skis

    and poles

thou art a snow god too

    good to be true

    love yer work!

rach - good to have on board.... i guess we could share ocean's gondola love shack with the velvet seating and disco lights...

  4. You may ask why i have decided to post about the man with the most posts.

It could be a thank you for providing me with amusing anecdotes, when really, I should get off my butt, stop procrastinating and draft that 30 page document which has been sitting on my desk for hours.

Perhaps, an ode to his words of encouragement and handy one liners (and I quote "Say Darlin', fancy some snow rompin' on Saturday." Now, how does a girl get past that one? I wonder if it worked on the girl with the bunny ears? Better still, I will try it out this weekend on the local boys and let you in on some reverse pscychology statistics.

Or perhaps even it is me daydreaming about a guy who gets about on a bigger than your average board in a purple, yellow, green, red and turquoise spatter pattern suit whilst listening to Puffy..... (no more on that one).

Most of it all, this is about the guy who is deep down a new age kinda guy, and sensitive enough to say "ret's talk"

    i'm in luuurve.

  5. Alas Mogski, Saturday I must prepare myself to be the belle of the ball (chur, embassy party, if you don't mind!). Although I must confess that the pull of lime green is undeniable (to think they actually manufactured boots to colour coordinate - I am suitably impressed). In a way, it reminds of that lovely green the french chose when they manufactured my 1968 renault (and yes before you ask, it is a piece of crap, but no reflection on the colour, mind you). Sunday, hangover aside, I will pull myself out of bed and jump on the train and head north for the day methinks.

Ocean - me trusts we are still talking about board sizes and keeping it all above "board" so to speak! I'm thinking that Nozza gondola might come close to the car scene in Titanic..... actually, it can't really be called the mile high club on the slopes now can it?

Danz - a man after my own heart, but the dark side beckons....

  6. danz/mogski/ocean 11 - look like we need to find the quad, not the romance chair then smile.gif

actually danz, i think you might be onto something. odd huh, the japanese have done to death every imaginable kitsch, quaint and the novel yet they have not invented gondolas with themes. bags i the one with the hello kitty insignia on the front. oh, and with a choice of hitomi or smap , yes please.

Will be out and about this sunday at Gala, weekend after, Shin Akakura and then either of Hakuba or Arai. Might see you there me hearties.

ps - mogski, i was a skier myself until last season, no problems at all, although I reserve all rights to call the ski fashion police!!

pps - kuma/nat no fair disclosing apres ski antics.... just remember, what goes around comes around! and i have the photos to prove it!

  7. have you noticed that riding (or skiing) in japan is quite a different experience when it comes to having a chat with tanaka-san or joe jones sitting next to you on the chair lift?

i skied in canada, austria and australia for about 5 years prior to coming to japan. when you scooted down the singles line to get back up as quick as you can for another awesome run down and you sat down on the chair, you started up a good old chin wag with the stranger sitting next to you about the weather, the snow, the awesome line you just took, the fact that you are australian not austrian, and no, we don't do funny things with sheep etc.... it was almost always a good way to pass the time, and if you were single, meet someone to have drinks with apres ski (that is, if you didn't have the good fortune to be sitting with your b/friend on the "romance chair", which is also another very good way to pass the time but which involves less talking!)

perhaps (noting ocean 11 and danz's threads) things have changed since i became a boarder in japan, but i don't think so. this is not a boarder vs skier thing at all. in my humble opinion, people, whether they be japanese or foreigners just don't seem to chat as much. my japanese ability is okay, so i always sing out a cheery ice breaking ohayoo to my fellow passenger but invariably fail in continuing the conversation all the way to the top of the mountain.

okay, i can see it coming, perhaps its just my poor social abilities, and i should not be allowed out, period. perhaps the fact that an attractive foreign boarding lass sitting next to you renders you all speechless (perhaps that's being wishful). then again perhaps not. i will use my next chair experience to ponder my observation further - in silence.

anyways, look forward to chatting to you all when i am riding in Arai for 2 days - cheers SJG.

  8. i have to agree with Ocean11. trousers worn at the wrong height in this day and age is simply unforgivable.

Batman, methinks i have heard the same story, only it was set in Lake Louise....

Of graver importance in all of this is... where are the all the cute boardin' bobs at? i scan the mighty white for them cute boys to come riding past but alas... perhaps it has something to do with me catching my front edge and not looking the right way up.....!! or perhaps something more sinister is at hand?

anyways, cheers for the amazing snow. off to naeba this weekend, have a great one all.
