  1. Phone them up and tell them that when you heard what they'd done, you cancelled your trip and now you're going to sue them for the cancellation fee and emotional distress. Tell them that you're urging your friends to do the same. That way they'll understand that you've excluded them from the category 'friend' and they'll not to try to follow you on your holiday again.

Also, this isn't really political correctness, it's more a question of savoir-faire. These people that you're dealing with don't seem to have much of it, so you'll have to deal them quite a striking and unmistakable snub.

  2. I just called Apple because I really, really, really wanted to download my photos, and they gave me the option of paying 7,000 yen for two years of help, or 3,000 yen for help with my current problem, or a link to a crappy Apple site without any useful info on it.

Instead, I found a product called DiskAid which lets you download your photos really quickly. It costs a fraction of what Apple is charging for help. Apple has taught me to Think Different.

  3. My point was that considering these people are sitting in their kotatsu anyway, they're not troubled with being hot, and people don't live for ever. We're also in the middle of a very long energy crisis, so after an innings of 97 years, is it really necessary to go around urging old people to turn on their very old air conditioners and burn more energy, thus making the world still hotter?

If the old ones want their air con on, by all means let them have it, but if they don't care ... some people don't seem to understand the law of diminishing returns ...

How true. I did a very cursory check of the iPad and Galaxy Tab in the respective shops, and just from the feel of it in your hands and general dimensions, the iPad is way superior. The iPad is the shape of web pages for a start, whereas the tab isn't.

Which is what makes the horribleness of the software all the more surprising. Say you find a song you hate on your iPhone, and you don't ever want to hear it again. Why not delete it there and then? Well tough, you can't. You have to nearly crash your car as you fumble about trying to Shuffle to a song that doesn't drive you crazy, and then remember to fire up iTunes when you get home so that you can find that song whose name and band you don't even know.

Naturally I tried that, but it didn't go well either. First all of the jailbreak tools complained that my software version was too up to date, and about six months later, I got tired of waiting for them to catch up while iTunes kept pestering me about updating my OS (and telling me I had 'purchases' that needed backing up, but not telling me what they were nor how to back them up).

Do you know of a jailbreaking tool that works reliably with the latest version? I have something called 'Phone Disk' for mounting the phone as a disk that was working nicely until yesterday when it suddenly stopped working at all.
  6. I have an iPhone which I basically like very much. But every time I try to plug it into my computer, something different happens. iTunes is just the biggest piece of shit ever. What do those menu items mean? How do you get your goddamn songs onto the phone, and your goddamn photos off it? Sometimes it seems to work. It worked last time I sacrificed a small bird that I caught, but now even that doesn't work. Perhaps I need to sacrifice a human child?

Today I tried to install Safari (because Firefox loses my bookmarks and Opera wouldn't let me use a master password that I like). But Apple is so stupid they won't let you install an English version. Because you're in Japan right? So you must be Japanese right? I was yelling "Try to Think Different you stupid piece of shit!" The first thing I saw when the browser opened, apart from the mess of Japanese, was a picture of a half-dead Steve Jobs. Do they think people actually like the guy?

Apart from the times when they realize that you might like to have a little computer thingie in your pocket, they seem to have rocks in their heads.

  7. I used to see a Western tranny around in Osaka when I lived there. When I first saw him he was all glossy like that Peter bloke. But then something began to slip (pressures of this and that no doubt), and one day I almost bumped into him in the arcade and he had full war paint on over 2 cm of stubble. It was a very disturbing sight. I think I might have screamed.

Japanese TV would be better if they didn't feel the need to have men dressed as women on every show. Having said that, after a rather slow start, Matsuko Deluxe became quite entertaining.

  8. Yes her. The immoral young woman had carnal relations with a married baseball player, so they say. Denied it of course. I believe he's still playing baseball, but she got her just deserts. No more nodding on the weather news. NHK is a family channel you know.

  9. Yes, muikabochi, it does appear so.

This brief article covers the main points.

Shikoku Denryoku are taking creative measures to prevent what happened at Fukushima happening here, but the trouble is, the design of the reactors here is different. The reactors at Ikata have fragile cooling pipes that are more vulnerable to shaking than the ones in Fukushima. But the specs at Ikata are for a level of shaking below that of historical earthquakes in the region - according to NHK's Shikoku Rashinban. The Yonden exec who was wheeled out to repeat the line "we think it is safe" had some interesting facial tics that were strongly suggestive of internal turmoil, as of one who knows he won't be believed by anyone who hears him. He kept calling the cooling system at Ikata "natural cooling".

  10. On weekdays, NHK News 7, followed by Closeup Gendai. On Sunday, Bankisha. I find Fukuzawa very watchable. I used to like his lunchtime show Pin Pon - he maintained a good pace and was a bit probing at times. Its replacement is pathetic. It feels like a primary school class on a particularly bad day.

Closeup Gendai is good when the serious lady has finished her overwrought introduction and before she introduces the taihen kuwashi bore from the university. Usually the documentary segment in the middle is quite a revealing slice of Japanese life. The Shikoku-only version, Shikoku Rashinban on Friday evening, is pretty good too. They've been semarimasing on our local nuclear power station, and our local geologists reckon it ain't going to cope well with the expected ground acceleration.

Of course, all of these programs are almost completely silent on the really big issues - global warming, peak oil, the global reserve currency, imperialism etc. Those are taboo, to be tiptoed around at best.

  11. We have our household aircon set to 27 degrees, and as long as you don't run about and jump up and down, it's a comfortable temperature. However, that's comfortable when you have on just two items of clothing, a Uniqlo dry shirt, and dry shorts. If you were to mess about with long trousers, socks and folly like that, it would be intolerable.

We'll know when pols are being serious when we see them on TV in shorts. The only thing that I liked about PM Koizumi is that when it came time for cool biz, he actually showed a modicum of leadership. These fools with no ties but still wearing their jackets should be put in greenhouses to think about hansei and things.

  12. HERE'S CNN WITH A LADY SHOUTING AT MICHIO KAKU! AND MICHIO KAKU SHOUTING RIGHT BACK! IF I COULD JUST INTERRUPT MICHIO! AND SHOUT THAT I'M SCARED ABOUT MILK! WITH IODINE IN IT! AND GESTURE WITH A RUBBING MY HANDS UP AND DOWN A BIG SHAFT MOTION WITH A BIRO IN MY HAND!

  13. I don't want to get the first levitating version because you can be sure it would have bugs. It would hover sideways, or unaccountably smash into your face when you move slightly.

Any system that allows you to get hold of reading material without paying is fine with me. I've read a few ebooks on my iPhone and it works nicely. PDFs are a bitch though. They don't reflow properly at all.

(Clive Cussler books - titter. Good for wiping your bottom with perhaps, but surely not reading...?)
