Do you ever look at the detailed Whos Online page, ie:
http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=online
the link that says "Click here for details" on the right hand side column of the forums.

OK I have looked over our records.
Here's what we changed:
1
Previously journals were posted instantly when people submitted them. But we were suddenly seeing a fair amount of spam (viagra, pharmacuticals, etc) being posted up there. Obviously that is not good and so the only way to prevent that was to make it so that we had to "approve" journals before they appeared online - just like we have to approve new members on these Forums before they can post. So we implemented that system.
2
There was a (small) number of people posting excessive swearing and bad language and frankly stuff that did not make any sense at all. We were getting a lot of feedback from other people about this and we were thinking the same. We simply do not want that kind of thing to be published on our site. If people want to write content like that, there are plenty of places online where they can do that and we invite them to go to those places.
>>>>>>>>>
We have detailed records of everything that we edit or delete, both on the Forums and on the main site. We have records of what was posted, who posted it, what was edited/deleted, why any action was taken, who did it, when they did it and any email responses that came in. It's quite thorough. Happily we do not edit or delete much at all, and so there isn't much. We do this so that we have that record and can review things and confidently defend our actions if people accuse us of whatever (which sometimes unfortunately happens). It often borders on the amusing how some people remember things rather differently from how they actually happened (as per the facts in front of us).
I have just been looking at the very few journals that were edited or not approved over the last few years. In each case it was an easy decision and I would do exactly the same today as was done back then.
So unless you wish to accuse us of anything else, perhaps this thread could get back on topic?

Quote:Then the new format came in, censorship of journals, don't get me started....
Don't get you started?
What exactly are you accusing us of 'changing' - apart from perhaps starting a system where we had to approve journals before they went online (mostly in order to stop the increase of spam that we were experiencing) and also not allowing journals that were full of swearing and bad language?

Thanks.
The snowjapan.tv site is only a few weeks old but we have had a fair few behind-the-scenes issues to deal with since it first went online! But the good news is that - fingers crossed - the site is now perched on a brand new, nice server with a good connection to the intertubes and should hopefully now be settled and ready for the season. We are hoping that things from now on will go smoothly, but if you do find any issues with the site please do let us know at editor@snowjapan.com and we will look into them.
If you are not logged in, you can view videos for a short time each day. If you are signed up and logged in you have unlimited access to all of the videos. Please do sign up if you intend to either upload videos or view videos this winter. It's a really simple process and totally free - you can do it from this page:
http://www.snowjapan.tv/signup.php
Please note that you cannot login using your Forums username and password - you will need to register over at the .tv site.
Thank you

Yes of course. Just like before. As said at the top, really nothing has changed. We're just laying out the guidelines and get the message out of our wish the Forums not be thought of simply as some sort of link directory.
You have a cake I see - happy birthday!

Before reading this please note:
This thread does not constitute a big shift in our policy.
The people this will affect by far the most is the people who want to gain by having links on here!
Thanks for using the Forums. The snow season is nearly with us. Ace.
In the run up to this new season, we want to make our policy concerning links on the Froums a little clearer so as to avoid any misunderstandings.
Due to the increasingly large amount of traffic on SnowJapan and these Forums, a link placed here to an outside website can be a very valuable thing for the website that is linked to. For that reason there are often cases of people posting links on here in an effort to gain more traffic to their - or their friends/colleagues/company - websites.
In an effort to prevent the forums from becoming over-run with unsolicited advertising while at the same time be fair to the people and companies who already support SnowJapan, as well as to ourselves, we have guidelines regarding linking to outside websites on these Forums. As you will probably have noticed, these forums are 'advertising free' and we do not take well to people trying to use them and bend this particular rule.
Here is our basic policy on the subject, only slightly unchanged from what we have been working with the last few years. We try to be as consistent as possible, though there may be times when we are more or less strict on any of the below issues. But we need the guidelines to be laid out so that you know generally what is and what is not acceptable.
LINKS THAT ARE OK:
1
Links to any page on the SnowJapan site ( http://www.snowjapan.com )
2
Links to any page on the SnowJapanForums ( http://www.snowjapanforums.com )
3
Links to any page on the SnowJapan.tv site ( http://www.snowjapan.tv )
4
Within reason, links to an outside non-commercial information source that is relevant, of interest and expands on the topic being discussed -- as long as it doesn't come across as being promotional in nature and/or is not in one of the cateogies below.
LINKS THAT ARE NOT OK:
1
Anything that comes across as promotional - whether blatently intentional or not. Please do not try to promote your friends business on here, however well-intentioned. If you wish to help someone with a one-off mail, an email might be more appropriate rather than post a link in public. If a company has information on pages within SnowJapan, post that link.
2
Links to commercial websites. Things of the nature "I stayed at this lodge www. lodgewebsite. com and it was really really great" are generally not allowed.
3
Threads that exist purely to promote a link. (ie. a thread created with a link and almost no other content).
4
There are some websites that we simply do not want links to on SnowJapan - for any number of reasons. We're not going to be posting a list or explaining this, but such links if they appear will be removed.
5
Links to inappropriate sites (porn, etc)
6
Commercial messages in Private Messages are strictly not allowed. Sending multiple Private Messages with commercial messages will result in a ban and deletion of your account. If you find someone sending you such a message, please let us know.
Posts, signatures and Private Message advertising websites, services and forums are treated as commercial posts.
A FEW GENERAL COMMENTS:
There may be times when we make decisions that you do not agree with. Perhaps they could be seen as 'borderline'. Perhaps you cannot understand why we do not wish for there to be a link on SnowJapan to a certain page or site. But please understand that it's going to be up to us to decide what constitutes an advertisement, promotion, borderline or a link that we do not want on SnowJapan.
Even if you don't understand a decision, please try your best to try and respect our right to make these decisions!
THIS IS NOT A CHANGE:
As we mentioned at the top of this thread, this does not constitute a big change in our policy, though we may implement our guidelines more than we had before. But for normal posting and general usage nothing has changed. We just want to be clearer on this issue before the busy winter season gets underway.
More information on general policy can be found here:
http://www.snowjapanforums.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/12/page/1
Thanks and we all hope you have a great season.
-
I have just deleted a few posts on this thread. This is not a place to simply gather links for businesses as was becoming the case here. Thanks.

Fattwins, if you are referring to showing photos on here:
Only 1 thing has changed. That one thing is how to get the URL of a photo.
Before:
Right click on a photo to see the full URL of a photo.
Now:
Click the "View URL" text link that is shown below a photo. The URL will be shown which you can copy.
The actual URL of all the photos on here have not changed.
If you want to put a photo on the forums, you do it in exactly the same way as before:
ie.
Thanks

Please don't just automatic expect a re-run - there was a really large effort involved in getting such prizes for this contest! We're currrently putting together all our Giveaways and contests, so please wait a bit longer for news on that kind of thing. Thanks.

So you accept then?
Glad to hear your comments.
We're looking forward to hopefully seeing many more this coming season.
Cheers

SnowJapan Hakuba Photo Contest 06/07 - The Results

All valid photos uploaded to SJ last season were given to those friendly people at the Tourism Association in Hakuba to choose the winners.

The vid is working again now.
Thanks tsondaboy, sorry for the hassle.
-
Well we're quite used to that, so not much change there
Seriously....... we did not choose the winners and if people want to moan about things then they can just jolly well bugger off (and maybe get themselves put on a blacklist for anything we offer this season).
That's what I think.
-
No you don't get to vote in this one.
The people who supplied the very wonderful prize did.
-
Any complaints or moans about the results should be sent to
complaints-and-moans@the-people-in-hakuba-who-chose-the-winners-of-the-competition.com
We didn't make the choice.
-
The "Visitors online" number on the snowjapan.tv site is now displaying correctly. (Previously this was not working properly).
-
I have just fixed that link.
Everyone - if you find things like this, don't keep it quiet or post a comment on here that we might well miss..... please contact us directly and let us know!
Thanks
-
BTW, we will be editing that upload page soon to make it a bit less cumbersome with text.... just need to get round to that!!
-
ChisaChi - can you elaborate on that please?
The Yuzawa town guide is here and seems to be fine...
-
They should now upload "as is" without any change.
That's the theory anyway.
-
-
Over the next few days the tv site may be unavailable for short periods as we make some necessary changes to our server setup and deal with some network issues.
Sorry for the disruption - hopefully it will not be for long and things will be back to normal speed soon. Thanks.

I am simply responding to your "new format... censorship of journals... don't get me started" comment.
Many people read these posts and we do not wish for them to get the wrong impression about this site and the way it is run.
I do not know who your friends are and the specific instances you refer to, but if anyone decides to not post on SnowJapan because some of their journals were not approved for the reasons I mentioned in the above post (#243320), then that is just fine with us.
Thanks.
