  1. I agree with SKI, "earn your turns" is a bit a of a silly saying. If you want to hike the mountain, good for you, but saying that in doing so you have earned your turns just makes it look like you are looking down on those of us who use a lift.

Is there any other sport who has a saying that comes close to this one. I've ridden to the top of some nice hills to mountain bike down. Don't remember thinking I'd "earned" my ride down. Sailed in some great winds, had the boat up and planing along. Don't remember thinking I'd "earned" the ride.

Anyway I think it's a silly saying. You want to hike fine, just don't lord it over those of use who don't.

I totally understand and agree with the saying "earned your turns".

It doesn't infer that you are looking down at lift or helicopter users but acknowledges the effort you have put into getting your run down the hill.

Other sports I've been involved in (judo, football and cycling) have many expressions about having to "earn" a particular status or reward. Said "earning" usually describes supreme physical effort and sacrifice with training regimes.

The idea of "earning" your reward implies that you have made the sacrifices and put in the hard yards to get it, so I can totally see how climbing to a peak to ski down from it can be described as "earning your turns."

Quite the opposite of being "silly", IMHO it is most apt. :D

  2. Yesterday, I had my first session back on the bike since my latest back injury.

Did about 30 minutes at the local criterium circuit. Hell of a headwind down the back section but I averaged around 30km/h.

Pretty small scale stuff but it felt good and the fuse is lit to start building up the k's.

No negative reaction from my back this morning which was the primary outcome objective.

In my head, the plan is now to constantly build up the bike and gym time between now and the January trip to Happo while being careful with the diet.

Reality seems to put many hurdles in the way however, such as the Eatons Hill Hotel (Largest pub and restaurant complex in Australia - 15 minutes walk from my door) holding an Oktoberfest this weekend! :D  :D

  3. I compete every year. Never won it. Never got close to winning it!

But my daughter is reigning ladie's champion!

It is more like a SuperG or Downhill race than a GS or slalom.

It is funny watching every one jelly legged at the final gates.

    Awesome stemik!!

    Congrat's to your daughter

If you don't mind me asking, what age category do you compete in? and what time usually wins that category? I'll be 50-59 category for the next few years.

I was thinking that the locals would be unbeatable in most categories but would love to have a crack if there were some kind of Gaijin award.

  4. I have been down that a few times in the comp (in my own mind)

Unfortunately it's a three stopper for these old legs!

My thoughts exactly SJ. Technically, it looks as safe as a high(ish) speed event can be, but quad burn would be considerable.

In my mid-teens when training and racing for the school, some mates and I "downhilled" (ie. pretended it was a race event and dodged the ski patrols etc.) the ladies Olympic course at Axamer Lizum in Austria - top to bottom. Compared to the short slalom and GS courses we were used to racing it was unbearably long and the many cruisy sections were absolute agony in the tuck. By means of comparison, at that time I could do the "chair sit" exercise (hips and knees at 90 Deg while "sitting" against a wall) for some 15 minutes.

I'm well keen to try it but fully accept that standing up, or stopping, to relieve quad pressure is inevitable no matter how much I train these old legs.

Onya Ethan - you look young enough to do this event a lot more justice than I!

  5. Hey, this little Brazilian ain't all bad.....

Aside from causing intense pain, the venom of the spider can also cause priapism in humans. Erections resulting from the bite are uncomfortable, can last for many hours and can lead to impotence. A component of the venom (Tx2-6) is being studied for use in erectile dysfunction treatments

  6. Mrs. Big Al's Honda CRV (don't know if it's got the same name in Japan) is the duck's nuts! :D

Pretty good space inside - best in class for medium SUV's - and a super sweet engine.

You see plenty of the previous model, and pre-previous and pre-pre-previous models on the roads in Brissie so they seem to last the pace which backs up word-of-mouth testimonies.

Must admit to being a huge fan of the late great Soichiro Honda. Studied him a bit during my business Masters Degree and he came across as not only a compulsively industrious dude but a real "out of the box" thinker:

"The value of life can be measured by how many times your soul has been deeply stirred."

"I'd sooner die than imitate other people."

"It is not in my nature to spend money sparingly when I am having a good time."

    "Yourself first, the company second."
