  1. My bro and his fiancee are coming to visit in December, so I'm looking for an overnight stay up in the mountains for 4-6 people. But bro's lady isn't a big fan of snow action, though she does like onsen. We have no car so will have to train/shinkansen up. Mon frere is a beginner on the snow too, but I wouldn't mind a little more of a challenge.

So I'm thinking Nozawa, but because we can only do a single night stay somewhere nearer to Tokyo with a decent hotel/onsen would be nice, if anyone has any recommendations?

If not, does anyone know of a good affordable hotel with decent spa facilities so that the non-snow folks have something to do?

Trying to look on websites is a bit frustrating because they're mostly all in green season mode! (though they do look awesome, really wish I had a car :( )

  2. Don't think I'll ever catch up to the current gen again- so much backlog. Only just chewing though Deus Ex Human Revolution (bloomin' good game though). Won't ever have the time to warrant a new console purchase, the wii is gathering dust and DS and PSP are relics now. PS3 is the only thing that sees use (thanks to the uk PSN+ sub i got), mainly thanks to getting a mac instead of a decent PC (silly, silly me).

It's a nice thing to just chill out to (I don't watch telly, just this instead), but I think my proper gamehead days are well over.

  3. Lady Peetan went to the au store yesterday to discuss her upgrade from a 16gb 5 to a 64gb 6 (apparently 32's aren't being made anymore??), totally flummoxed by the process.

If she carried on without upgrading or changing her contract she would end up paying about 1,000 yen more per month because of tethering and end of the discount period etc.

However, the guy's billing numbers for her contract completely mismatched her last bill. Strange.

She has some discount vouchers and will trade her phone in though, so at least that will make it cheaper.

Also, changing to a new provide seems a no-go now, as they all now lock you in to a more expensive (3,000 yen talk+ much more for data) package?

Just seems so strange the way contracts work here.

  4. When I upgraded and wanted the discount I first had to pay 10,000 for a contract alteration fee, then start over with all the offers etc. It worked out cheaper than just getting the phone outright.

You need to look at if the 2835 yen pcm is discounted off your monthly bill, or if only part of it is. If your discount for the phone is less than the cost of the alteration of your contract in order to get said discount, then just get the phone. Unless you want to change your data tariff too, that is, in which case you'll need to discuss it with them anyway.

In all honesty, they only really tell you what you are paying for when you're sitting down and signing up with the pen in your hand, the sneaky buggers.

  5. Hmmmmm... I could have been swayed, but not really. I like my watches, it's really the only kind of accessorising you can really get away with (besides those sexuality-questioning belt buckles you can buy). None of the combinations look that distinct, worse still the magnet clasps look like -as lady Peetan said- someone could take it off your hands very easily.

I'll stick to my analogues and pocket watches ;)

  6. Had to go to the byouin today to get fixed. Wheeeee.

Hadn't been able to drink for a couple of days and was sweating like a mofo- throat had closed up and I could only communicate with lady Peetan via gestures/writing. They hooked me up to a saline drip and gave me a ton of medicine for the throat/fever.

Safe to say I've been to friendlier hospitals- they were very heavy handed when looking at my throat, talking to me as if I was a retarded man because I couldn't reply in the usual Japanese and not being that sympathetic when I needed fluids but can't swallow. Told me to gaman until the saline, and took their sweet time about it.

Anyway, out now- resting at home before trying to drag myself into work tomorrow or Thursday. Busy time of the year as well :(

  7. Up until about two weeks ago I was in really great condition, because of the job (karate coach at a school) and because I was peaking for my style's all-Japan championships (got to best 16), and working towards being in the national squad back in blighty. So went back to the uk, worked out there and did pretty well regarding the squad, so I came back and have "rested" for the last two weeks.

It's now "off" season regarding tournaments anyway, but I'll be getting back on it to improve for the snowboard season and tournaments early next year!

  8. I saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty on the plane over the pond. I was very pleasantly surprised! Not a challenging film by any means, but a great flick to relax to after a ferw beers on a Sunday evening kind of film.

    Also saw:

The Fisher King: very mental- worth a watch, even if just once. Actually didn't think Robin Williams was that great in it. Jeff Bridges however was awesomely despicable.

The Lego Movie: Actually, meh. nice message, but the in-jokes didn't hold up for me.

    Watchmen: favourite.

Snowpiercer: DON'T WATCH THIS ON A PLANE. IT WILL RUIN THE MOVIE. It just didn't make sense because of all the editing. I only watched it because the warning before the move suggested it wasn't going to be heavily edited. Seriously, think sunday-afternoon-edition-Robocop edited.
