  1. Would like to try Hirafu.

I have found a fair few disappointing - like those in Hakuba.

Nisekos night skiing is simply amazing, it's the best I've ever skied. Ever. I agree Hakuba sucks for night skiing, but the terrain around there is far superior I think. Both have so many options that you really can't go wrong! Trying to decide Honshu or Hokkaido for this winter right now :) Hirafu night skiing... :D

  2. Great thread this. My wife and I are also getting into the housing market. One problem I have found is that some of the lots we have found we have to buy through Sekisui or another one of those companies, which we don't want to do. Some of those prefab houses just look terrible. Granted, I have seen a few (2-3) that made me think, that's a prefab house? It looked great inside and outside wasn't bad either. Those were few and far between unfortunately.

I wanted to say thank you for all the information and points to keep in mind when we start looking seriously, too. So many questions have popped into my head that I'll have to reread this, go through all those links you all provided and get my thoughts in order first. Thanks!

I'd like to see the "housing thread" as well once it gets started. You must be very excited Dumbstick! How long is your mortgage going to be for? 30 years? How much are you looking at putting up to cut down on your monthly payments if you don't mind me asking? I know many questions become too personal when it comes to $$$ etc, so don't worry if you don't want to answer.

  3. Chriselle, I've seen that several times in the States myself, but thankfully it wasn't for me. I always go with the flow of traffic back home, but that's usually about 75 miles an hour which I don't mind because it's what I usually do here :D I still get passed loads too. Some drivers really fly don't they?

I know it's about police cars, but what is up with people doing 80 in the right lane blocking traffic, and going the same speed as the car next to it? Bitching about drivers here is a past time of mine. Sumahen :shifty:

  4. Had that happen to me heading to Takasu the other week. My mate and I were driving up and all the cars were behind the cop car going the exact speed limit. I just don't do the speed limit so I was going about 7 or 8 km faster than the group and managed to pass them and get up to the cop car, right when I started passing the cop car he got on the loud speaker and said that the speed limit is 80km/hr and that's what I have to do, so he pulled immediately behind me and repeated that two more times. I moved over to the left side and dropped my speed to just at 80km and then he proceeded to pull up next to me and say that if I speed he'll pull me over. Going 8km over warrants a freaking speeding ticket? What a wanker  I don't understand the logic nor the necessity to just do the speed limit - it is a highway right? We drive 80km on back roads in the States. Straight, two lane highways and the limit is 80? Why???

    NON-FATAL AVALANCHE ON MT. YOTEI

Details are not complete but this is what I've been told.

Two seasonal workers from Australia were caught in an avalanche on Mt Yotei yesterday whilst descending from close to the summit ridge line.

A large gully slid and caught one skier whilst a second avalanche was triggered and caught the other skier.

The skier caught in the secondary avalanche suffered no injuries.

However the skier caught in the primary avalanche was carried approx 750 m and came to a stop buried up to the shoulder.

He was rescued by his party who were aided by a Japanese firefighter out on the volcano.

He was airlifted off Mt Yotei by helicopter and treated in hospital for two broken femurs and a compound fracture of the tibia.

The operation last night was a success and the skier is doing well.

Wow, sounds like he is lucky to be alive!!! Glad to hear there aren't two bodies going home in coffins this time.

  6. Is this weekend CNY? Or is that over? Sorry I can't remember.

I would love to be heading out to the slopes this weekend but have work due to entrance exams :( Schools making us work on long weekends is just criminal! Sunday after we're finished going to meet up with a few other families and go eat some delicious food around the Ise Peninsula. I just can't get excited to go out there when we could at least do a day trip to Takasu or Washigatake

  7. I'd like to find out more information too. The families must be going through hell, so my thoughts go out to them.

    RIP.

    ニセコなだれ情報第46号 Niseko Avalanche Info No.46

Niseko base 6am: -9℃, no snowfall and calm morning. Moiwa peak: NW5m/s, -10℃ and light development of snowdrifts. Annupuri peak: N8.1m/s, -12.8℃. Coastal data: NNE5m/s, 1.3m waves and 1014hPa.

The atmospheric pressure gradient is shelving and the weather is calm. No notable development of snowdrifts can be observed and the new slab formed on top of Jan 24-25 is stable. The avalanche risk is low. Gates 2 & 3 are scheduled to open at 10am.

There have been 2 fatal accidents yesterday. In both cases, the Niseko Rules has been ignored and disrespected. It is really sad to apprehend this reality. Both victims fell into a crack and lost their lives. Dangers about cracks have been repeatedly mentioned in this information, but ended up in vain. Disrespecting, ignoring or criticizing this Information or the Niseko Rules is not a problem as long as people take care of themselves and avoid thoughtless actions that could lead to serious accidents. It is a very sad morning. May their souls rest in peace.
