He was wearing a beacon but was alone
Well, perfect example of how useless the gear is with out the right people around you. Would of been better off in a high vis vest. Did they find him in the end? Last I heard they hadnt.

Horrible news. Thoughts to his Family. I've been hitting back country for the first time ever this season. I never go out with out a Beacon, Shovel Probe and crew of people who have the same and know how to use them. I guess its just so easy to be complement when you dont know what you are really dealing with. Particularly dangerous when the snowpack is pretty dodgy this time round.

Lost my HeroHD 3 Black yesterday.
22 Jan 2013. Happo-One, Skyline run. Far right had edge, half way down where the catrack turns back on it self. 5 meters up before the catrack. Middle of the run.
Caught a heel side edge while facing up the mountain, (thanks powder covered mogul) fell backwards, hard. Didnt realise Gopro had come off my Helmut. RIP

I ended up getting an early bird Happo Season pass. Now having been here a month I wish I had gone with 47/Goryu
I like Happo but it gets tracked out really fast, and its not opening a park until the end of this month or mid Feb. Having the benefit of hindsight I would have gone a week day pass at Happo and a JTB pass

Dont charge it via your computer. Use an iphone/ipod port and plug into the USB port of that.
I have a black hero 3 and it lasted a couple of hours no problem the first time I used it.
I did have massive issues upgrading the firmware to use the iphone app and remote.

Excellent video Byhart - content and quality first rate
Thanks. Wish I had been ripping down that ridge line a little harder though, first run for the day so was going a little easy and it shows in the video. Wont be doing that again, go hard or go home.
Yes but hindsight is aleays a great thing
Do you use the helmet mount?
I did for this. This was the first time I had used a GoPro. I got the new black edition hero3. Ive bought a suction mount and a tripod/stick/mono pod/pole thing. Just waiting for it to be delivered. Been focusing on ridding and developing and plan on filming more in the last few weeks of the season.

So I just found this
http://mb.softbank.jp/en/prepaid_service/prepaid_plan.html
It list data on a pre paid card, it has a 12 month contract. with at roughly 10,000YEN opt out. So I think i'll take that and cop the charge when I leave in 6 months time.
Unless there is other options?

Don't act like the rest of the Aussies in town....... ;)
Probably the best advice you could get.
Learn some basic Japanese.
'Sumimasen'= Excuse me
-
And toilet seats clean and blow dry your arse with a musical accompaniment .....how hi-tech is that??!!
Still can't get ATM's to work on Sundays tho!!
Would prefer sim card that works in iphone 4.
Now excuse me for a second, I'm off to try and find the blow dryer on the toilet seat.
Sunrise, iphone 4's have mini sims. I have some language apps and other really useful stuff on my phone, so im pretty keen to keep it if I can.
-
Ah and I bet you thought that Japan was going to be some incredibly high tech society?
One of many myths about Japan that Aussies have...
Yeah, I now realise its a very common misconception. Not sure what Im going to do now. Maybe I'll just get a prepaid data sim and use Skype, Viber and Whatsapp.
-
wait, so I just read all of that and it appears im screwed.
I dont really care if its not 4G, I dont care if its slower than the copper lines from 1940's that most of Australia's internet is run on.
I just want a sim card, with a local number I can give to people (girls) i meet and a way I can upload photos to Instagram to make all my friends back home insanely jealous.
I acutally went into softbank today they had a big sign in English 'We can solve your questions here-English speakers' I went up and asked "Eigo ga hanasemasuka" and they all shook their heads. I asked slowly 'pre paid sim card? And pointed to my iphone, they still shook their head.
So i guess I actually cant do this, You mean there is actually a market with a considerable amount of want to be buyers and no one is supplying this service? Crazyiness.

Im in Tokyo at the moment so not sure about wifi, pretty sure there will be. but ive become totally accustomed to having it every where, its also really good for turning my phone into a GPS to help me get around.
My iphone4 is 3G. I really dont understand why its so hard here? Whats the thinking for restricting foreigners to hiring phones at the airport for outrages prices? Ive travelled allot thru Asia and honestly this is one of the most ridiculous phone situations I've ever experienced. It should just be easy and cant for the life of me figure out why its not!

Hey All,
So im in Tokyo at the moment and am in Japan for snow season. Working in Hukaba starting on the 14th of Dec.
Im a little confused. Im trying to get a pre paid sim. I have brought over my jailbroken and unlocked iphone4 and would like to get a Voice and Data sim card. This is proving to be almost impossible. The ones Ive found want to charge the equiv of $15 A DAY!
I have an ALIEN REG card and address in Hukuba.
What have others done? Dont know If I can live with out instant access to internet and social networking.
Cheers,
Nathan

Has any one been to whitehorse?
-
It's just being finilised now but I'm 99% sure I've got the position, just pending a reference check. Ad yeah it's for the whole season.
-
Thanks for the info.
I could probably just check with past staff members and see what they have done. I may even be able to get something thru Whitehorse
-
Yeah that's still aroud by what I can tell. It's called the lucky pass or something.
-
Cool - what sort of work will you be doing?
Little bit of everything that invloves a hotel, resturant and bar.
Making coffee, bar work, shoveling snow, cooking a bbq every friday night and driving the courtesy bus to the resorts some mornings.
Variety is a good thing
Really exciting!

Hi all,
So looks like I've just landed a job at a lodge in Hakuba for the season. I can probably ride for a few hours about 5 days a week. Pretty exciting.
Does any one know if I can get a season pass to all the resorts in Hakuba? or do I need to get them individually?
Happo One - Mobile or Walkie Talkie

Getting a phone in Japan unless you rent one from the airport is a nightmare that I wouldnt advise. It goes a little like
Have Resident card. Register address of Resident Card. Register for National Health Scheme (needed to register address) Pay Fee for NHS. Get Phone.
All done in the 'local' office - i.e in Japanese aka Nihongo.
Pick a time and meet there. Easiest way. Or pick up a tourist 30 days data only sim and use viber, line or skype.
