  1. +1 for what Muikabochi and Tubby said.

Might also add Ryuoo which plans to close in early May and has a 1930m max elevation.

I'll have to look into Gassan. The only place I know of that opens in spring is Senjojiki in the central alps in Nagano. planned season from Mid April to Late May. Has anyone been? I've been thinking about checking it out.

  2. Also back to Kagura  I've never been when the quad is closed but I usually pick blue bird days so I can hike. The Yuzawa report says only up to the romance 1 lift in the Kagura area is open. That would really limit things! I guess you could walk up to some of the closed runs and get some powder but I can now see why people wouldn't want to go on a windy day! Kawaba, Houdaigi and Iwakura in Gunma might be some good options for a windy day. Kawaba gets high winds but even if their quad closes there is another high elevation lift tends to stay open and accesses much of the same area. Houdaigi and Iwakura seem fairly protected despite being fairly high elevation but I can't say for sure having never been in high winds. All three are really nice.

  3.

Deep down I guess I was hoping for something a little less obvious and more intimate than Hakuba. Would love to hear about good early season alternatives that are good for a weeks skiing

Nozawa is really nice for both skiing and enjoying the town. Very nice feel about the place. Pleasantly touristy with lots of hot spring hotels. Might also think about the resorts around Mt. Myoko which are pretty close by. I have never been in winter but I did have a good time there in summer also have the hot spring hotels. Really beautiful mountain and nice little town. Could probably do Nozawa and the Myoko area in one trip. Yuzawa is another great option with lots of hills but during Christmas time Kagura might be the best option due to it getting the most snow. It also has hot spring hotels. Noticing a patern in my thinking :) Nothing like a hot spring after the mountain. Those would probably be the best options besides the Hakuba valley and Hokkaido.

  4. I have to wait until Sunday, sadly- Damn work/training getting in the way *grumblegrumblegrumblegrumble*

It's a three way toss-up between Marunuma, Oze Iwakura or Kawaba. Buying the red-eye bus ticket today; which would you say is best? I've only been to Marunuma, but really like it, Kawaba is grabbing my attention but the lady is liking the look of the other. But seeing as it's me who is buying the tickets, Kawaba is leading the way :p

I've never been to Maunuma but like both Kawaba and Iwakura a lot. All three should have great snow. What kind of rider are you? Iwakura is really nice for straight riding and off-piste but doesn't have any park features worth mentioning. Kawaba has a bit of everything but less variety of courses (That said Kawaba has nice variety just not as much as Iwakura). I think Kawaba is better for easy close to the trail powder and has some tree runs that intermediate riders can hit. Both have great advanced level off-piste. I might be at Kawaba on Sunday if your interested in meeting up for a couple runs :)

  5. I was thinking of maybe going to Kagura this weekend too. The snow japan forecast only says 35 km/h winds for Kagura at the top on Sunday. If that holds true I can't imagine that stopping the quad lift. Even Saturday afternoon and evening don't seem too bad (45 and 40). I think it will be open but might be worth calling to make sure. How are Gala and Yuzawa Kogen in the wind compared to Kagura?

  6. I have also been wanting to bring my trip reports over to the main site. Can we, and would you like us to, add links to forum pages in the main site reviews? If so, would you prefer us to write a short(ish) review then link to the forums or to copy the reports from the forums in their uncut form and modify them into a review? I ask because some of my trip reports are kind of long and I think the pictures sometimes tell a lot of the story. Sorry for the kind of confusing question :)

Also thanks for all the hard work you have done this year with the giveaways!
