  1. Dude, you are down the road from Chokai. I love that mountain! Are you doing it in the spring when they open the road? How about Gazan?

If you plan on being anywhere near Misawa in Aomori I can let you use USPS mail. It would be the same as shipping from California (where the forwarding address goes to) so if your final destination is near there it would be cheaper than if it has to go to say Florida.

YAMABUSHI, thanks for the offer man! I'll def keep it in mind! and Yes, Im like 30-40km from Chokai! LOVE THAT MOUNTAIN TOO! unfortunately my plans to hike/ski it last spring were nixed due to the disaster, and getting involved in the relief efforts etc etc. AND Im actually leaving before the road opens this year :( SUCKS, but what can ya do. At least I got to summit it a couple times during hiking season.

  2. Hey Snow Japan community!

Hope you all can help me spread the word on a project we have started to help raise funds to send a Sendai orphan to university. We have met with Masaya (the young man) and the orphanage director several times, and I must say Masaya is a GREAT kid and has so much potential.

If you can please take a look at our Scholarship proposal below and PLEASE pass it along to anyone who may be able to help us! We could definitely use all the help we can get ;)

    Much love,

    Paul

Hi my name is Paul Yoo, Co-founder of volunteerAKITA and The Fruit Tree Project (www.volunteerakita.org). Along with our on-going activities, we are also involved in the “Smiles & Dreams:Tohoku Kids Project” led by Living Dreams/SmileKidsJapan. Right now, we are working as Home Communication Managers (HCMs) to two orphanages in the Sendai area. Our role is to act as contacts for the orphanages, and relay any needs they may have.

What we need right now: A boy, in his 3rd year of high school (his final year), at one of the orphanages we are in contact with, has become the first orphan there to ever express interest in going to college. He wants to attend Yamaguchi Hukushi Bunka Daigaku (University of Human Welfare and Culture) and study hoiku ka (child care). It is a four year program and the university will cover tuition for the first 2 years of the program, along with 50% of the 3rd and 4th years. Our goal is to raise¥1,154,000 which includes ¥970,000 in tuition costs for the 3rd and 4th years, along with an ¥184,000 mandatory insurance cost over 4 years.

We are currently accepting donations for the scholarship fund we have set up. After collecting the sufficient funds, we will then transfer the money to an account that will be handled by the orphanage.

We welcome any grants, scholarships, or personal donations to get this young man to college, and most importantly doing it without leaving him in debt after he finishes school, since in most cases, once an orphan has finished high school, he is on his own.

It is truly inspiring that he plans to go to college and is the first from his orphanage to show interest in doing so. Successfully sending him to college would be such an amazing gift, and would inspire other orphans to follow in his footsteps, knowing that they too can receive a college education, and strive to become whatever they want to be in the future.

If you have any questions regarding this proposal or can help us out, please contact me.

    Much Love,

  3. Have you thought about getting another Burton style? I have to say that I'm a big big fan of being able to adjust the upper and lower part of the boot separately. I've got a pair of Ions and they are sugar sweet. I've used the Rulers in the past as well. I once used a pair of those boas and had two problems with them... one was that I didn't feel like I could adjust them the way I like (because Burton has ruined me from their tweekability) the other was that I bumped them on something (maybe while in the trees) and they released completely. I mean they instantly got super loose and I was hating it! Another minor point was that the liner felt too restrictive because of the way they attach to the boot.

Yea, I thought about giving another burton boot a shot, cause I def DONT hate the Rulers Im rockin right now, but have had some issues with them. The boot material doesnt hold up so well, Im not sure if its just me, but ALL my burton boots in the past have kind of fallen apart on me after a season of heavy riding. Right now my Rulers have a Sh#t ton of shoe glue caked on the front! haha its so ghetto fabulous. Also as of late, I feel like the quick draws are loosening up on me, cause no matter how tight I get my boots Pre-1st run, I always feel them loosen up substantially by the 2nd or 3rd run...so then I gotta stop and tighten etc etc. BUT usually after the second tightening, im usually set for the day, and SUPER comfy in the boots ;) so I dont mind too too much.

on a side rant...Burton gloves SUCK!!!! haha...I use to burn through pairs, and now they are banned from my life ;) Has anyone else experienced this? the material on the thumbs (the part u wipe ur nose with) ALWAYS fcking falls apart (and flakes off the glove)...ALWAYS....its ridiculous.

Anyway, back to BOOTS, watched a million-gazillion reviews on you tube last night, and Im def gonna hop into the shop and try on a pair of dual Boas (whether its the RIDE,DC,or thirtytwo boot) and as a kicks man, I just gotta give those Nikes a try ;) haha...those would def up my steez on the mtn...haha Great comments guys! thanks a bunch!

p.s. the Boa system is lifetime warranty! pretty dope

  4. to answer the aerosol question, obviously its NOT going to be better than hot waxing da gnarstick ;) and I doubt they advertise it as being a total replacement. I think its main purpose is for that "quick" fix when you just rolled up to the mtn and notice ur edges are a bit beat. In that case by all means spray dat shit on (there are also deodorant like sticks too) and hit it! but yea, hot wax is the way to go!

and seemore, I also agree that its a great aspect of prepping for a trip! kinda creates that special bond between man/woman and board. not to sound too cheezy, but its true! haha

  5. NICE feedback yall! My only hesitation on the BOA style boots before were the lower/upper sections not being controlled separately, but I like the idea of the dual dials, and really think i will give them a chance. Has anyones wire ever broke? and with the spare, could it be done on the mtn, with no tools?!?! just a ques.

Ippy, always appreciate your feedback brudda! thanks as usual! What specifically is hard bout clippin in with the forces? Also, i havent heard many ppl rockin the nike boots! so appreciate that feedback! As a man who loves his KICKS, I have been a bit envious of ppl rockin the sweet/perty nike boots ;) good stuff man!

  6. DUUUUUUUDE! 10,000yen!!! damn thats NOT right...if they are charging that price just for waxing then thats WHACK! haha Maybe they are doing other stuff too like sharpening edges etc etc?!?! but still even with other maintenance thats still pricey.

OK, I'll stop bitchin bout the price ;) haha but you are right, you should TOTALLY start waxing yourself! YOU CAN DO IT! Some people claim it takes a lifetime to perfect the art of waxing boards/skis, which I think is probably true! and I'm definitely trying to improve my skills/technique which I think at this point is "mama" but does the trick, and saves me a shit ton of money each season.

A real easy way to learn the basics of waxing is to youtube it! (sounds corny, i know) but there are TONS of videos on it, and alot of them are professionals doing a walk through of each process. Watch a couple videos, everyone might have a slightly different technique, but for the most part they should all be similar. So just pick and choose, and try it out!

2 tips from me would be to always keep the iron movin! (obvious, you dont wanna leave it in one spot, it can mess up ur board) and next would be to NOT use tons of wax! You will get the hang of it the more you wax, but pretty much everyones first wax job, they melt on wayyyyyyyyyyy to much wax, haha which makes it crazy when it comes to scrapping.

Hope this helps? I'm def no pro, so if anyone has anything to add def drop some knowledge! woot!

  7. Hey folks! looks like I'm gonna need some new boots REAL soon (the shoe glue just aint cuttin it anymore) Anyway, Im rockin some 10-11 Burton Rulers. Like the boot (not LOVE) but wanna try something new, maybe even a new boot system like boa or whateva. Holler at me with any advice/comments about the boots you love/hate.

I use to rock lace ups, but couldnt get the desired tightness from them. Right now with the Burtons they got the 2 zip cord thingys on each side, I really like being able to tighten the lower section and upper section separately, but lately i have noticed the cords slipping as the day progresses and i have to keep re-tightening throughout the day (boooooo). Also a few weeks after I bought the boots one of the cords snapped while i was tightening it...(and i wasnt pulling crazy hard)

Definitely interested in the boa style boots, but just sucks if the wire breaks (you're out for the day)

Anyway hit me up! thanks guys!

  8. Just got back from Nozawa, and I must say it was definitely a GREAT experience! The mountain is sweeeeeeeeet! but also the tiny town that sits at the bottom is one of a kind. Real chill/laid back, FREE onsens scattered throughout town! (Also some GREAT pay ones too) and it just feels like JAPAN. I love other places like Hakuba and Niseko too! but definitely a different vibe from Nozawa.

Also, next time I head back to Hakuba, I might just skip Happo One all together, and head straight to Cortina ;) so much FUNNNN and powderlicious, haha (and a fraction of the crowds Happo gets)

In the end, so hard to choose a favorite! Japan has so much to offer!

  9. Hey party people, another gear question! Just lookin into a new set up for myself (moving away from burton, no hate or nothing, just trying something new)

Anyway, I'm pretty set on what board I want, but can't decide on bindings! I personally like what I see when it comes to Union's 2012 lineup! I've been thinking about a pair of Union Force bindings. Anyone got some knowledge to drop on me? Much appreciated!

  10. Im loving my NS SL. Very forgiving board. I know that has NO techinical information but that's all I have. Where my Lib Tech would throw me on my ass Im riding out on on the NS.

what Lib Tech board were you rockin? I was lookin into buying a Sk8 banana, because my Hero slips out ALLL the TIMEEEEEE (its really really really annoying). Anyway maybe I should look into another board?!?! Any advice would be great! thanks!

  11. @yamabushi, thanks for all the info! I've been up there twice and it was so much fun both times! (even though we didn't know all the sweet spots of the mtn, etc etc) Anyway, trying to get back up there SOON! but was wondering if you have any suggestions on places to stay up there, like any cheap pensions or lodges etc etc. I know the area area Hakkoda is pretty sparse, but just thought I'd ask!

    Hollaback!woot!

  12. Heyyy party people, just switched to a rocker board last season, and I LOVE IT. Picked me up a Burton Hero (i know i know to all the Burton haters, haha). Anyway, such a fun ride, super playful, great in pow!

BUT, yea I definitely want to branch out from one brand, and try some new boards. Been wanting to switch to LIB TECH, but gotta save up some cash money first. Anyway all thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated! woot!
