  1. The challenge has been laid down.........

On some days a long run up may be required, even specialised machinery but our entry to the sacred phone box has certainly resulted in plenty of snow, even though we are now at home, sleep deprived and maybe a beer or two under the belt, hopefully you are all enjoying our effort. Adjusting to the humidity, rain and lack of snow will take some time and hopefully the alarm clock will be forgotten.

  2. Hey TubbyBeaverinho,

We were there on the 26th. What a day, lots of powder, no people.

We spent the entire day riding lift B & C, doing the 2 black courses 1 & 2, except for a trip to the Mountain Restaurant for lunch and we too were given the “soup” with our meals.

We were very impressed with the large beer glass, the table in the photo finished 2 during our lunch.

Being Australians and Australia Day, it was a hard decision not to have a beer and we left to kept riding the powder on runs 1 & 2 until 3pm and then rode to the bottom for a well deserved beer and a bus home.

We didn’t do any exploring, just rode that one area with a handful of others. We saw plenty of people try one run, never to return after their adventure of digging and walking. Beware of heads that pop up from the snow when you least expect it!

With all the powder and lack of people, Maiko was a great place. Without the powder, the reviews made a lot of sense. The views would be amazing as shown in other posts but we'll take powder over sun any day.

Apart from the “soup”, the only complaint was the music of one Kanye West and similar on repeat on chair C. If not for the joy of straight lining these runs in deeeeeeep powder, I may have made some comment on his lack of musical skills, but it just made the challenge of getting back on the chair before his “songs” finished a fun challenge.

  3. Hey All,

Having riden Maiko and Kandatsu in Yuzawa the last 2 days, while not being serious mountains, it was amazing how many bodies \ heads popped up while riding the black ungroomed runs. We were having fun straight lining these runs and were amazed how many crashed people there were to dodge at times and yes, us at times as well.

We have a few hours to ride at Gala before we leave tomorrow and are sure there will be more heads to dodge in the south area.

Tubby, Maiko was veeerrrry nice on Thursday and look forward to getting back there again on our next visit.

Look out for heads in the snow :omg:

  4. If it keeps on snowing until Friday, Seki. We found Seki pretty trashed if it hadnt snowed the night before but I only got there once.

We have spent a few days at Akakura Kanko (Akakan), its a lot bigger and can have some nice powder in the trees for a few days and may be better for a day visit.

Also, Suginahara is worth looking at as well. Long runs, plenty of trees and powder to be had. Just watch out for the Army peolpe skiing around.

Akakura Onsen did nothing for us, we rode in and rode out.

Rememebr with Kanko, your lift pass is not valid for the Onsen side on the mountain unless you by the combined ticket.

I am sure other will disagree but I only got to Seki once and would have loved to be there this week.

My thoughts and either way, you will have a great day.

  5. We will be back in Yuzawa for 7 days in late January 2012, after spending 3 very snowy days there this year, cant wait to get back. After watching the threads about this amazing phone box for several years, we have to get our photo taken at the phone box.

How far is the walk from Gala to the phone box ? If walking from Gala is not an option, what is the easiest way to get there ?

    Thanks

  6. Hey Thusrsday,

This will be our 4th trip to Japan, 2 to Hokkaido, last year to Hakuba and Myoko Kogen.

This year start in Yuzawa for 4 days then a week in each Hakuba and Myoko again.

Decided to start at Yuzawa as it sounded interesting, was not offered by any Australian snow tour company and all the reasons muikabochi mentioned.

Very much looking forward to exploring an area during our brief stay and as we have booked everything ourselves, will give me confidence for next trip to head further away from the main Australian tour areas.

I have been an avid viewer of this forum for years, just very slack in joining.
