Gakuto wow someone is doing well for themselves. Also the happo ski school for kids is great full day lessons for 6000 yen.
They set up a jump at the bottom of the tube park man that was crazy. Watched a kid do a full front flip after getting clipped.

The forecast for all of Japan is pretty much sunny until Wednesday.
The conditions were pretty good over the weekend but man was it busy! Great to see Hakuba actually making some money. The Japanese were out in full force for sure. Got the kids skiing yesterday the 2 year old boy can go down the baby slope so stoked made my weekend to see his big smile. The Happo tube park was f@@king awesome yesterday and there was carnage! Bloody well caught air in the tube so fun.
On Saturday I rolled the dice on a solo tour and just avoided avlanche city by about 20 minutes. I had a great line of ankle deep pow for 1000 meters vert then 500 meters of just perfect wet snow freshies. My timing was very lucky indeed. Climbed 800meters vertical total on the day. The bad news was that I got to witness the maddness that became of Mumezawa as people skied under cornices and on convexes. Lord f@@k a duck people learn about terrain and how it can effect your lines. Full on spider web fractures 20cms deep taking people for some wild rides!
VeryNice keep your fingers crossed it will return to winter soon or so the forecast says. If you can get over to Tsugaike great groomers or Cortina for the onsen and pizza. Or try kashimayari for great views and nice groomers.

Just loving the new PT job. So much nicer to work closer to home and only work half the time. Got some pretty good runs over the weekend although the light was pretty dull we got a few shots.
A few of Dan from Kyoto. A good guy that can charge pretty hard.
Leyland oh to be 20 something again! Those were the days of straight skis and no fear. Oh how I miss those times.
Then some wind on Saturday morning really blew the trees in well blower powder in bad light!

Hard to really debate this as the resort is handcuffed and cant say anything in their defense. I would like to hear the resorts side of the story as well before passing any judgment. Rope ducking is much different in Japan when compared to Canada. One uses a system of controls to insure safety while the other closes everything to cover liability.
-
Japan has wind problems so it would be crazy to build one lift to the top at such a high resort. It wouldve been pretty busy over this long weekend for sure. One of the big problems with the hakuba resorts is that they are a combination of companies. Lifts were not designed to link up at all. Iimori's adventure course wasnt even cut until 47 put a lift in that could access it.

Mumezawa is a bowl between Karamatsu dake and Happone ski resort.
-
Sometimes hiking up a ridge is much safer than traversing a backside though. The ropes need to come down if the area is safe. Putting up ropes as liability or risk management is asinine. Japan needs to get with the times and provide a better product. This though wont happen until the resorts themselves find a way to make money again.

I got lucky and had 4 days off in a row. Saturday did not go as expected really, stupid rising temps. Should have gone into the Otari area for sure. The top of our line was great, but then we got into point release city and not so fun.
Sunday I got a nice private line in Mumezawa that I call MV'sTB. Add a short hike back up to Garagara. Then went into nice sheltered line that cant be seen. The line provided excellent dry powder snow which I refer to as the GaraFridge.
Here is th Mume line. You must watch the cliff band on your skiers right.
Monday was too foggy so I just cruised on my new race skis. Man are those skis demanding and fast. I forgot what it was like to ski fast skis. Tried them in the trees on dust on crust but that was a big mistake. Lucky enough I did not hurt myself, really lucky. They are too stiff for rapid fire turns.
Tuesday saw another day for a Happo push. Was the right weather to try and get Kairazu but I had to take the kids to school. Some friends almost got Kairazu but were 30 minutes to an hour too slow (which means I wouldve been too slow too). The weather closed out the viz for then so too bad. Still they got a nice couloir that is rarely skied and reported blower snow.
I went back to Mume solo to get another crack at MV'sTB line. My favorite line in Mume with a nice run out chute at the end. Lost a section of my pole on the way down. I had to duct tape a tree branch to my pole for the next climb up. I had Japanese guys taking pics of the modified pole. I also ran into Bill G from evergreen and snapped some pics of their tour.

A Finn
I promised not to cut across them so as I waited for them to get into a safe zone I snapped these pics
A simple redo of MV'sTB
A seldom skied mini chute off of garagara
And to top off a great day a nice small triangle line. My tracks are the lookers left. Very dull light but it was not flat light
More of the triangle.
All in all a good break from work.

It would be good to hear the whole story. Mistakes are made everyday and you learn from them. Sometimes you need someone to bail you out. Still it is good to hear what mistakes may have been made to educate people. I for one thought this story was going to end with very bad news.

Colorado in March for better snowfalls. It is too cold in Jan and Feb to snow much. The rockies get powder in May.
-
That is a nice end to what was sounding like a horrible story.
Way to go SAR

Not good news at all.
Sorry the map I linked was wrong.
I hope this turns out well. I had a friend spend 7 hours at yuzawa lost. There is hope.

Nice little tour.

what resort is that?

The fine print was read but the online box for snow sports was left unchecked. If an agent was involved the mistake would never have happened. As it is no operation is required and the person will be in a cast for 8 weeks.
