It has been a rather good March for snow but it is hard to find the will to post how good it has been.

one mornings powder could and can be the next mornings crust.

What makes me most angry is how much money the media is making off of this. They arent even offering 10% of the increased profits yet are stoking the fire daily. I will never buy a paper again, or click on one of their links again.

Look if we shut down this country and stop working and spending money this wont help the people that need us to go on. We need to make money for them. When the government is in a position to ask for our direct help to re-build or clean up some should go. Right now it is up to the army to get this done. They don't need the burden of volunteers that would also need to be fed. So as GN said life must go on. Spend money people. Spend money at 25% more than normal. If we crash the economy by hoarding we will further destroy Japan.

Quite frankly im more worried about more earthquakes then those reactors. A holiday is a holiday. If you cant relax then I wouldnt go to get more stressed. I would encourage people to do something to deal with the stress of the situation. Paint, Ski, have sex, anything to not give yourself a headache daily.

Another way to help the people up there is to stop buying everything off the shelf. It does no good to stock pile when people have nothing.

It might be a challenge next season and this summer season.

There is not much we can do really. It is best left to the army and the pros to get in there and save people. Once that is said and done, Im sure that they will need people for the clean up. With the gas problem and such I cant see many people getting to the resorts any time soon really.

Tubby do you have any snow near you?
If you do put it in the freezer.

Life has to go on for those not effected. If we shut down, the economy will dry up and that wont help the people that need our tax money. Of course going out will be hard but we have to move forward somehow. I took my kids out and had fun. At all times I could not get the images or the problems out of my head. It does no good to stress my children out as well, so we got them out. My 4 year old daughter skied the womans downhill which I was so proud of. A small moment but important step to getting back to life.

It will be a quiet end to the season for sure. I too am praying for the storm to not really come. But the areas that were hit by the quake are not in the big snow belt so lets hope for them.

I hope everyone is Ok. This has truly shaken Japan to the core. Happone was silent on the weekend and very eerie. Spend most of my time with my family at a time like this they are most important. Stay safe and try not to panic we have to be strong for the people up North. Dont believe all the media for profit they are making millions on this disaster and will try to grab ratings shares.

I highly doubt that Hakuba will wither and die though. Hakuba does not need to compete with the new Niseko it needs to carve it's own niche.

The Austrailian Governments warning on Japan. The stats reported by the Japanese embassy in Australia were in the number of about 2000 Aussies a year are falling victim to this scam, so it is more than 1 or 2. To a person on vacation in Japan good luck finding the right bar on your one night out. This person knows they made a mistake and is trying to let people know that this does happen. They were knocked out with drugs for more than 5 hours.
The Australia travel warning.
Crime
Japan generally has a low rate of crime. However, there is an increased incidence of drink spiking at bars and other entertainment venues, often resulting in credit card theft and assault. If possible, you should avoid carrying your credit cards when you are visiting nightclubs in entertainment districts.
Sporadic incidents of bag snatching and pickpocketing of foreigners in crowded shopping areas, on trains and at airports have occurred. Credit card and ATM fraud can occur in Japan. If you are suspicious of any items that are stuck to ATMs or look unusual, do not use the machine.

Nice! That is exactly what ill tell him thanks. This was put up as a warning to others that think Japan is such a safe country. And thanks great comment.

This was in Shinjuku not in Roppongi.
The American Embassy said that this is becoming more of a problem and has advised Americans about it. The Australian embassy said that this
is now reported almost everyday.

This happened to a friend just the other day.
The story needs to get out there.
I had never heard of such things before this happened, but it appears to be common. I was naive and stupid about the dangers. Just to clarify exactly what happened to myself and my girlfriend, so you can hear it from the horses mouth so to speak.
I didn't receive anything for the $5k that was taken, that I am 100% certain of. I certainly was not looking for sex or anything like that, I was with my girlfriend and we were just out for an hour or 2 of fun on our last night. The african guy said we would get to drink whatever we like for 1 hour. We paid him around 3000 to 4000, that I remember, but not much else. We only intended to have a few drinks and go home. We had only had about 5 drinks over 3 hours before we met the african guy, so we werent drunk.
I honestly think we went in had our first drink spiked and passed out for several hours. I have a vague memory of me throwing up into a glass and feeling way out of it and being told everything was ok, I think thats when I passed out, but I dont really remember entering or leaving the club and I dont know if that memory is real. After waking up, we were probably forced to make several credit transactions though I remember nothing really. I know we left the apartment at around 10:30pm and the credit transaction was made around 4am. What happened in those 6 hours I have no idea, but I doubt we were conscious. I think I remember being made to sign a receipt and being told I must get the signature right or we werent leaving, but once again I dont know what is fact or fiction. I do remember for certain making it to the front of the the hotel and being incredibly relieved that we were back. I think we were lead back as we cant have made it home on our own. I dont remember going up to my room or anything else until 8am, when we were both still under the influence. Its like my brain has remembered only the traumatic events where I was scrambling for consciousness - throwing up, being made to pay, making it home - everything else is gone. At 9am we got out of bed and were both violently ill for the whole day, vomitting, barely able to move - we had to make it to the airport and the only way we were doing that was in a taxi....not cheap. Check-in we managed to pull ourselves together and we luckliy were able to get on our flight home.
Incredibly scary and I am really shaken up about it. I'm not ashamed to say I burst into tears last night when I was alone, but it does help hearing other peoples stories and knowing that I'm not the only one. I guess things could be worse and I should focus on the positives. I'll certainly be warning anyone who tells me they are going to party in Tokyo.
If something like this does happen you should contact the Australian Embassy and the Japanese Metro Police. Get a drug test ASAP as this may help identify what you have been given and also help with the banks believing your story. Making a statement to Police in your own country is also advisable. Although the police aren't likely to be able to do much, making a police statement adds more weight to your version of events and once again, this may help with the banks investigation.....at least I am hoping these things help with me getting my money back. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Quote:"As the helmets spread from head to head, you can see how otherwise sensible people give way to an irrational misjudging of risk."
I don"t think helmets really change the way people think or ski in the mountains. Companies are in the business of making money. In this case the companies risk management team must have seen an increase in brain injuries.
If you look at American pro sports at the moment, all the talk is about brain injuries and how to prevent them. Helmets are not actually helping the players very much right now either. Personally I think my various helmets have saved me a few times. Not from death but maybe from a good headache. The slap back fall in the park or the side hit to the rail. Also clipped many trees with the top of my helmet which could have knocked me out. A helmet is not going to help you if you decide to make full contact with a tree.

That is quite scary.

March has been a really good month for snow sliding. The earthquake/Tsunami/nuke plant problems have really kicked this country right in the gut. Life however does go on. For some of us that means we will get back outside and enjoy this great planet. I got to spend lots of days skiing with my wife over the spring break.
This last picture was taken today with my phone. I was the only one at 2pm to ski the center line down the bowl. Great snow for April wind blown powder.
With a month left in the season there is plenty of snow left out there.
