japan = arguably the best place in the world to snowboard.
australia = arguably the worst place in the world to snowboard. (especially if you're paying for lift tickets $120AUD/day this year)
but snowboarding in australia>japan at this particular time of the year
Oz get rid of the stickers and give the deck a polish with mister sheen on The Spliff Family Tree and you might sell it easier saying that after all the use it got you could just give it away for free

Heaps of beginners stuff at the bottom and decent restauraunts and pubs great starting out point for your first trip as there are alot of people speaking English.
I would buy gear before you go especially clothes secondhand from Ebay or Gumtree you can get some bargains and resell when you get home if needed

Are they prices to stay in the resort hotels at Ru and Kiroro?
Rusutsu has a couple of pensions in front of the hotel you could ask. Kiroro, you could stay down in Otaru and travel up by shuttle bus. Or you could stay in Sapporo, check out where the best conditions are in both Ru and Kiroro as well as a Kokusai and Teine then hop on the relevant bus in the morning
Resort at Rusutsu staying in the Travel Lodge everything else is booked out over the busy/ expensive period

It still works out cheaper from the US I was hoping I was seeing price before the VAT exemption but it was after only about $80 more but since I am a tightarse it has to come from the US

Rusutsu accomodation isn't cheap I am getting quoted $300/Night during Xmas and New Year and $150/night during Dec/Jan Kiroro is similar
Niseko has budget accom other than that I think you have to stay away from the slopes
