  1. This is a bit of a life story but probably relevant or maybe even helpful:P I started water skiing when I was 3 years old. My parents took me every weekend with a few friends(of theirs) up until this day, their friends also had children but there was only me and another girl a year older than me who started this young out of about 15-20 kids i think the youngest now is about 12. A few things Ive noticed is that the children around 5-8 years old start to develop a sense of fear so it is alot easier to learn mentally when they are younger having said that its better to not persist all day long because they'll lose attention and interest quickly and possibly be turned off later on.

the kids around 8-10 years old that were not skiing when they were younger either a. pick it up quickly or b. give up because they cant do it and are scared of being embarrassed when their peers can ski

I think around half of the children in my family crew were b.s and as a result many do not ski at all today.

Also the 2 of us that started when we were 3/4 were very competitive which helped us aswell

  2. I wouldn't bother arguing fang their helmets are blocking their ability to think rationally! but you did just give me a great idea for my case study for uni(psych/law majors)

Does wearing a helmet lessen the amount of perceived risk? increasing your chance of participating in dangerous behavior and in turn injury

I know the recent studies done by the Canadian ski assoc showed that a greater number of helmet wearers vs non helmet wearers died in skiing/snowboarding related incidents but they didn't mention what type of accidents nor where abouts i.e backcountry/park etc and other important variables

  3. my flight arrives late:( so im stuck on the overnight bus if i want to get out early the next day

option 1: Is take my case of luggage and snowboard bag with me onto the bus then catch a taxi to the goryu ski field where they have a resting room with lockers?(I couldnt find much info on this) and at the end of the day i catch a taxi to my lodge

Or Option 2: I send all my gear except for what i board with on the day via Takkyubin to my lodge and take just what i need on the bus and catch a shuttle bus back to the lodge at the end of the day where hopefully my stuff is waiting:P

just thought about option 2: is there a problem with carrying my snowboard to where the bus is without a cover/bag? other than me just looking silly?

    like park runs much?

Must admit I don't get this whole park thing. Japan gets some of the best powder on the planet and you'd want to waste it by spending time in a park!!? Especially if you're only here for a short holiday...I really just don't get it.

razz don't get me wrong for pow days ill be out there for first runs i just like parks more. Dont tell anyone but I really chose japan for the culture and food not the snow:P

I wear a helmet, but that's because I really am a pretty crap boarder and has saved my noggin on numerous occasions when I've been rag dolling down the slope. Then again if you aint crashing you aint pushing yourself. Thing is it doesn't matter how good you are; a lapse of concentration, an idiot boarder/skier wiping you out; you cant control an accident once it happens but you can get yourself some insurance.

I had a MTB crash earlier this year; hit the ground at 25 mph; snapped ligaments in my shoulder and split my helmet from front to back. It saved my life (still had facial bruising even with chin gaurd) but while I was waiting for lift to hospital guys on big DH rigs were passing me with no helmets; offroad organ donors. Trouble is we all think we're invincible until we hit a tree/gondola support/rock etc head first. If you aint wearing helmet, please carry a donor card, I may need your kidneys stir

Helmets dont make your head tree or rock proof they really only prevent cuts and bruises or small concussions. Should take a look at the recent study done by the canadian ski association; heres a quote "the use of a helmet will cushion the brain from a sudden impact to a certain amount, but in the instances when a fatality is likely, it will be unlikely to cushion it enough"
  6. I use contacts:)

I would try to avoid the optomotrist as much as possible once you know your prescription they generally overcharge alot for goods(especially contact lenses) and go straight to the companys that make the goggles and snow/ski retailers. Search for prescription ski goggles youll get plenty of hits

You can get custom made lenses to fit into most goggle frames

If your prescription is really high then you will have to get opitcal adaptors(these clip in behind your goggles) you can also get goggles specially made for the adaptors to fit however.

  7. Watashi wa baka na gaijin!

Which way to the terrain park?

Any cliff drops we can check out?

    That was steezy!

Which run has some nice kickers?
