  1. Buuuuut... i think the graun also confirmed that he wont be able to sign for another club in that period. So they might be able to keep him for another season.

    Every cloud :)

As for the game... id be terrified watching this as a yank. Germany running the game. Enjoying watching everything the little bald head of Bradley does like a hawk whilst ignoring everything else. So far, seen him make 2 alright forward passes, and run after about 8 tackles hes got nowhere near. Its fun :) Germany have to win it though... seriously...

Jones powers through, and Bradley plays a genuinely intelligent ball! Good effort!

And again. A brilliant ball from Bradley. Come on dude! i want this! Usa turning this around a bit n the last 10-15 minuutes also showing they have TWO wings! Germany look bamboozled when they just decide to run the ball instead of trying to pass it around.

Another one! Bradley playing way better. I might have to accept he ust had two shocking games!

Half time: One for the battle chess fans. Really fun game. Love that Jones and Bradley are switching up and down. Howard and Gonzales looking brilliant, but zusi and beasley both adding a little extra something (obviously germany shutting down the jones/johnson line after johnson tore into portugal), but great to see USA have other options.

As for my mega player Jones, getting into great positions, but a few fluffs that have killed some attacks by USA. And Bradley, playing excellently in the middle of the park and letting Jones do the running, but again, closer he gets to the box man... maybe if he nets a hat-trick somehow he might get over it :)

Twenty minutes into the second half and theres going to be some sore fingers tomorrow in the States what with the Ghana score at the moment. USA deservedly a goal down, theyve been completely out of the game the second half. I have a feeling that Klose has put the marking heebie jeebies on the back line allowing Ozil to continually swamp them. No need for a Bradley watch at the minute, because no ones really on form at the minute.

The big worry is if it stays like this, germany looking happy at the minute to not pressure too hard and looking to ease this last 15 minutes, Klinsmann will have a hell of a decision to make. Either hope that the Ghana game stays 1-1 and not risk conceding a second, or try and get back into the game.

    Woohoo! Ronaldo scored! Thank christ!

To be honest, it feels like Germany being a little... kind... here? A few chances that on another day you get the feeling Germany would have buried, end up with either a lackluster run or a really bad choice of pass. And when they aint ****ing about up front, they start making some 'choicy' passes among the back line.

Germany a totally different class of course. But would be happy to see the US go through despite what i said in the first game.

No but really, maybes a fluke, but that was a ffuking cross for the Ghana goal :o

PPS: The first half finally showed how those two are supposed to play together. Jones ping pongs and Bradley stays pretty static with the flow of play which allows him to do his job a bit better working the ball through. Of course, now Dempsey is TOTALLY isolated since neither Jones nor Bradley is there to connect with him. So still missing that... well, Dempsey isnt it? Thats his spot usually as i gather it. Its unfortunate that when they get the system actually working they might as well be playing with 10 men.

  2. Yes, but this just really outlines the function of a referee to adjudicate and not really the difference in the intention of the act itself. If its deliberate, its deliberate regardless of whether or not theres a possibility that in another situation, it could have been an accident.

If it helps, ill concede this point and get off the relative damage issue:

If a player pulled down his pants and peed all over an opponent, he's not left any marks, but it's still a lot more serious than a bad tackle

ETA: Someone mentioned being spat at as well. Im starting to see the point.

    ETA2: That being said...

Most of us know biting an opponent is wrong, and we can pretty much all work out that if a player does it repeatedly, (despite the fact that it invariably results in far greater harm to himself than his opponent), it is also an irrational thing to do. There are clear medical reasons why biting needs to be discouraged and it is not a very good example to set for any children watching.

In the days of misty, wobbly black and white telly, the incident in which Luis Suarez (allegedly) appears to have bitten Giorgio Chiellini might have gone unnoticed and no children would have been harmed by the flickering images of what would have been an obscure off the ball incident resulting in some falling over and angry gesticulation for reasons unknown. Chiellini may or may not have had a sore shoulder, but in all probability, he would have been more upset by Italy’s exit from the World Cup.

Instead, the world is obsessed. Children are shown the incident over and over again, Suarez appears to be the most hated man on earth, at least in the English (and possibly Italian) speaking world, and Chiellini appears to care more about his (allegedly) sore shoulder than he does about Italy’s defeat. Anyone who wishes Suarez to be treated with anything approaching compassion or forgiveness is described as an ‘apologist’, as is anyone who wishes to wait for the evidence to be properly assessed. The nearest thing to permitted compassion is the mantra ‘he needs help’, as long as it carries the subtext that he also needs to be kept away from football for a very long time, for his own sake as much as anyone else’s. The pundits in the studios are expected to wear the long face and make it clear that this is no laughing matter. It is the most serious televised incident since 9/11 and the wars in Iraq and Syria pale into insignificance by comparison. Anyone who thinks differently is an ‘apologist’. Perhaps the word should be ‘denier’, because this is really, really serious.

So serious that over a hundred Scandinavian punters cashed in on a bet that Suarez would bite someone during the World Cup. The odds were a generous 175-1. This maybe the most heinous crime of the modern age but ultimately ‘it’s all about the in play’, and, along with the entirely justifiable moral outrage at Suarez’s (alleged) assault, there is also the undoubted sense that it is a huge joke. He’s only gone and done it again! I don’t believe it. The big Adidas poster on the London bus featuring Luis Suarez says ‘all in or nothing’ - his teeth are all in all right! Arf! Cue the Jaws, Dracula, Hannibal Lecter jokes. These are the teeth that launched a million memes. We laugh, we condemn, we laugh, we condemn. We love it!

I was almost tempted to think that the reaction to the incident is more extreme and disturbing than the incident itself. But that would have made me an ‘apologist’. No. We may laugh, but we must condemn and above all, there can be no forgiveness this time.

  3. I get that. but then i start thinking, what if it is deliberate then, what if the whole thing is to do something wtf and get the appropriate reaction out of the defender. Professionals arent going to be phased by the above mentioned things, and will take them in their stride as part and parcel of the game, but then you think of Vinnie Jones grabbing Gazza's nutsack... So i cant find the part of me that wants to condemn it. Im trying very hard because im obviously in the oddball wing here so i should accept my moral compass needs a bit of adjustment, but i just cant. :) I dont even like the dude. I think hes a [censored] of the highest professional order. I know you guys are right on this but the melodrama irks me.

  4. Sorry dudes, youd have to convince me its massively different. If it helps, i dont think a deliberate elbow in the ribs is acceptable. I dont think people stamping on your feet is acceptable either or raking the back of your legs. But these are all common place. Its a sending off, im not disputing that, but i dont get why people think this is somehow far and away different deserving of some kind of enormous ban. Hell, why is this so much worse than Pepe's headbut or that elbow in the back by Song? Hes done it before? But er, isnt Pepe a ticking time bomb of rage? Wasnt it pretty much part of the German game plan to niggle at him? Didnt Uruguay do the same thing with Balotelli? Keep poking and poking and clattering and see if he loses his head? Any person whos played organised football at any level knows this. Youve been raked, youve been stamped, youve been elbowed. You probably havent been bitten mind you, but all of those things go on in a game and they should be banned. But its part and parcel of winding you up. It bothers me, but it just doesnt bother me at all. Maybe its just because Germans are dirty bastards that ive ended up so nihilistic on the matter, but i cannot see why this is such a huge issue. He had a nip. Its odd, but hes got a big horsey mouth so probably thinks he can do it slyly. I dont understand why he thinks that, maybe he thought Chiellini would swing around, elbow him in the face and get carded, or maybe he was just taking out his rage on the guy and thinks that a bite is some kind of super sneaky way to do it. Only Suarez knows that one, but right now he's not explaining it. Im not saying it belongs on a pitch. Im just saying its a bit of a massive over-reaction that this is somehow super special deserving of ridiculously long bans or even a 'lifetime ban' (as argued by Hoddle).

  5. ETA: Formerly in the wrong thread :")

Ive just seen that greece penalty. So im going to put in order the three things that deserved automatic red cards.

    1. The penalty. ****ing disgusting.

    2. Suarez having a nip. Who gives a shit? Its up there with an elbow in the ribs in my mind. Yeah, red card, but why do people go mental on it? Seriously, what the **** is hoddle on about? Wont someone THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!??!!

    3. Balotelli's WWE neck breaker. Stupid, clumsy and could have led to someone's career ending, but obviously not intentional, just well dangerous though.

  6. Probably one for the chess fans. Italy holding possession, gently working it to just inside the Uruguay half, trying the occasional push, but more often than not, not bothering. Uruguay get the ball, try to push quickly, get smothered, give possession back to italy and we do it all again. Uruguay probably looking for a set-piece in truth.

Just heard Chiles say that costa rica look 'alarmingly ordinary'. This has bothered me. Costa rica arent that great. They were more often than not lucky against Italy. They pushed high, were caught several times by passes lobbed over their lines, and got away with it thanks to an off-game Balotelli. In the second half they could have very quickly gone a couple of goals down. They then ran their luck for the rest of the game and were incredibly fortunate that Italy were half asleep and kept miss-timing their runs to be caught offside. I mean, they werent bad, but youd have to be filled with the romance of the underdog not to see that they were a bit fortunate for a large brunt of that game. Then again, italy are doing a similar thing in this game and once again, a single goal might cost them despite basically dominating the flow of this one as well.

Anyways, decided to watch the second half of the England game. The tempo is tedious and the lack of urgency in Italy to press at least a little is boring my socks off. Id rather have the possible chaos of the reserve team.

ETA: Made the right choice. Both teams kinda messy, but good chance of something happening. Lots of speed and aggression and England unlucky a couple of times. But whats this? Marchisio sent off for Italy? Which game! Which game!

ETA2: England sort of lost a bit of steam in the last 15 minutes. Im not SAYING its because Gerrard and Rooney came on, they were slipping out of the game about 5 minutes before the pair came on, but it was sort of disappointing to see both of them come on.

ETA3: Poor daft Suarez. He'll be crying into his pillow tonight. I feel for the big numpty. I do admire those teeth though, its like looking at Adam Sandler with a pair of comedy chompers. If Kenny Everett was still around...

ETA4: oooh! hello TB, didnt realise anyone else was on. Figured i was just wittering to myself as usual :)

  7. Cant decide which game to watch! I mean obviously the italy-uruguay game is the one you should be watching, but i really want to see how Hodgsons half-pints do. Ya see, i like that hes doing what hes doing. Dont care that they win or lose, just want to see if he gets the direction he clearly wants. Tricky choice ;)

  8. :) ah, you know, he ht it decently with enough pace, he just happened to pick the only spot in the entire goal where the only player for Portugal (Costa i think it was), happened to be. Maybe he shut his eyes. He seems scared of the goal to be honest.
  9. Right, can someone explain Bradley. What the **** is he? Theyve stuck him at the top of their diamond, but the dude is slow, lacks creativity, holds up possession instead of attacking with it, and cant lay off a pass longer than 5 yards sideways without it going to a player from the other team. Oh, and he bottles it the closer he gets to the goal. Everything about him screams holding midfielder. When i think of the dude, i think of two key moments. The first one was his fluff in the box that fortunately led to the Dempsey goal. I think he did it earlier as well. (His open goal miss shouldnt really count against him because he did hit the target. Nor should his give away at the end really be a fair reflection on his performance. He lost possession in midfield... so it goes. ninety nine times out of 100 it wouldnt have led to anything. It took a sublime cross and some poor marking to make that happen). The second one though was a three v three break V Ghana about 30 yards out for the US. He cut from the left into the center and then had no idea what to do with the ball. He literally pulled an awesome attacking opportunity back and held possession for Ghana to get back and kill the attack. So he puzzles me.

And then when youre done, explain Jones. The guy has the vision of a playmaker, the passing of a playmaker, but seems ideally suited to a defensive midfield role since he clearly loves making challenges, sitting deep and covering the runs of the opposition before they push into his defence. He also reads where the ball is going before everyone else on the park which led to some brilliant and important challenges in the Ghana game. On the flip, he played a little more up front in the portugal game, and his balls through the defence turned a poor attacking side into a genuine threat. Is there something going on with the US training system? Cant they get their players to play where they need them? Cant they pick the right player to do their job? Or was this all structured beforehand with Jones and Bradley always fighting over the same position (that neither of them seem to play naturally - theyre both center midfielders, but with a more defensive lean)), but Bradleys form has just been poor in the world cup, while Jones' has been rather excellent?

Its... confusing. Maybe i need to judge it after more than two whole games of watching them (internationally or domestically), so maybe some of you guys can explain it a bit more. Is it just because Dempsey is being played out of position and Beckerman is filling in the gap left by pushing one of those two forward?

Anyways, US deserved the win. Both sides arent brilliant, but Portugal seemed out of it. I bet Ronaldo wishes they were knocked out last night. If hes going to set a world cup alight, its not going to be this one.

  10. Just over 80 minutes to go. Was kinda filling my time with nothing and started reading the honduras-ecuador report on the guardian. Was gona just skip it since ive seen the goals, but it sounds hilariously good fun. Off to watch it.

(im still chuckling away at the images they went for).

    ETA:

56 min:Interesting fact: Honduras midfielder Jorge Claros is so hard that in 2011 he sustained a gunshot wound to the head in an attempted car-jacking and then drove himself to the hospital for treatment.

ETA2: 20 minutes in and ive seen:

    i) a **** you attitude to midfield. Both teams might as well play a 4-0-6 formation.

ii) a sublime pass to costly on the half volley that just skidded away from him.

iii) a beautiful run from right to left to beat the offside trap and run completely free through the middle from Valencia. It really didnt get the credit it deserved.

iv) Someone kicked up the arse. I forget who it was. It was early on.

I also caught the last ten minutes of the game at the gym where i watched ecuador tell honduras to go **** themselves with some outrageous time wasting. Now its contextualised, its much funnier. :)

    ETA3: Brilliantly taken goal though.

ETA4: Honest to christ though, if you didnt know the result, theres no way in hell you could know if thered be no more goals or 15 more. Its pure chaos. One lucky bounce and its in. And to prove the point, one lucky deflection and blam, ecuador one-one.

ETA5: Either the alcohol is leaving my system or the games kinda losing its mojo. Though still as scrappy as the first half, theres a real lack of push. Both teams kinda scuffing it in the second last ball. Sounds stupid, but everyone keeps talking about quality in the final pass, but really, no way either side is approaching the final pass. Lots of moves just ending up nowhere. First half definitely better. I know a goals due, but its... actually, the exact second i type that its 2-1. But its a set-piece classic. Nothing interesting. It sort of lacks the aggression. Both teams seem settled unfortunately. Still, first half was a belter. :)

ETA6: Rightyo, time to skip to next game. But honestly, kinda hope Honduras keep going. Of the two teams, theyre the more entertaining. Ecuador are alright, but trying to play football. Honduras are a bit more chaos, and way aggressive. Fun to watch. Also, im not going to pretend im a fount of information. The last game i probably watched before this world cup was in the last world cup, but the three players that stood out were the two hondura centre halfs (figeuroa and Beckeles) and Costly, who looks genuinely dangerous for around 60 minutes (id sub him after that though hes kinda dropped out of the game now). Dont get me wrong, both the Valncia's did their job, but i mean poacher first goal and set piece second. Not exactly mindbinding stuff (though loved that run he did in the first half).Anyways, commentary over, time to fall asleep watching the Argentina rout of Iran. Heres to Honduras sneaking through against Switzerland (who can honestly bugger off home).

  11. "The best world cup since...!!!" said pretty much everyone.

watching the build up on motd... alan hansen true to form:

"that sums up the tournament. No one can defend."

I just realised his scar looks like the symbol of Tao.

    Do not glorify the achievers

So the people will not squabble

Do not treasure goods that are hard to obtain

So the people will not become thieves

Do not show the desired things

So their hearts will not be confused

suddenly i understand the Tao. I also understand Hansen.

  12. In other world cup news, spent all monday creating a nice double ppt for the kiddies (a world cup explanation and a world cup bomb game). Just done two lessons on it. It turns out that no one in China could give less of a shit about it. Only another ten classes to teach. Its going to be a long two days :)

  13. Just woke up, had around 5 hours sleep, switched on iplayer, Just missed the Korean goal. Then Blam, russian counter and immediate goal. And since then its been terrifyingly fast. Its too early for this kind of game. My hearts in my mouth. Also, Korea... brilliantly inventive balls out there versus stupidly aggressive russian surges :)

ETA: Missed the second half of the Belgian game. Disappointed with the result, but not unexpected.

ETA2: Games calmed down. Thank christ, too much to process right after that goal. Russia really looking up for winning this though, so many players in front of the ball. Korea digging in.

    ETA3: Comedy Korean goal.

  14. hooray! algeria have been dull, but belgium have been worse. I cant stand watching teams just pass it around their back 4 waiting for space, its tedious as shit. I mean itd be alright if people are moving somewhere or creating openings, but its static. Its just pass to the left, nothing. Pass to the right, nothing. Maybe have a venture forward... get crowded, back to the back 4. At least, shit as they are with their 10 men behind the ball, when they do break Algeria put a bit of pace into things.

Lets hope they lose. But they wont. Of course theyre just going to pressure and pressure and do the same shit until they grind Algeria down, but its unimaginative and boring as shit to watch.

And whee! plenty of 25 yard shots from the Belgians when they run out of ideas.

And just as i write that, Belgium finally figure out how to attack!

That all being said, Strachan is playing a blinder in the half time analysis booth. The mans got 1000000 ideas at once, and cant decide which one he wants to talk about. Vierra has to be losing confidence in his English just facing him. Its not you vierra, its him. Hes ****ing mental. But right though. :)

  15. Game was good fun. Well, for about thirty minutes. Even at 2 down Portugal still looked like they could pull it back.

Two things to note: First, I used to play for a german local team years ago, and i remember watching the Bosnians and thinking "oooh, classic Germanic style". Memories of training sessions that were about 10% running, 10% 5 v 2 one touch, a bit of cone dribbling, a small kick around mini match at the end, and about FIFTY PERCENT of the session being drills on shooting from outside the box. ****, they LOVED shooting from outside the box. I think it destroyed my game to be honest :p Anyways, good to see Germany working it instead.

Second, jesus christ, legs! Almost every shot attempted by Portugal hit a german defenders legs before reaching the goal. I can only surmise theyve gone all German and scienced the spin of the ball in every single conceivable iteration and worked out exactly where to throw their bodies. Its phenomenal!

Watching the Ghana v USA game. Pretty scrappy. Lots of wasted chances at either end. Two mediocre teams with nothing special thus far.

One flashpoint: Muntari's challenge there was outrageous. Then he kicked off on top of it. I love the referee tried to broker a peace, but man, he needed at LEAST a booking on that.

I dont think ive facepalmed so much in a single game :)

Mid way through second half, ghana are looking good now. Well worth having a wee watch on a replay. Id skip through the first half, but the second half is a massive improvement.

ETA: Game settled down again after 70 minutes. The goal though was excellent. Should really end as a draw. Would have been a fair result. Ghana wasted plenty of chances through shitty end balls, but look like they have a bit of imagination on the lines. USA looks solid and dull. Hope they get knocked out to be honest. Less of them in the later stages would be nice.

ETA2: Super cute celebration by Brooks, he looked in utter shock. Great header though, one of the few headers ive seen that have been down. Its set-piece 101 but so many skied over the bar.

ETA3: Theyre making these stoppage times up. Two players carried off in the Portugal game, portugal 4-0 down. Two extra minutes. Nothing at all happening in the USA game, 2-1, 5 extra minutes. Where the hell do they get these figures. There must be a referee edict somewhere.

ETA4: Jones, brilliant game. Well impressed with his composure. Totally controlled the US line.

  16. Its my weekend (work wed-sun) so can finally watch some games. And after literally hours of trying to find the games online i suddenly remembered i have a vpn and can switch it to the UK. Ah, its nice to watch Lineker.

Pity my first live game was the switzerland-ecuador game. Worse that the bastards on the guardian feed posted this abomination so i can no longer write the word Ecuador withour hearing "eh! kwa-DORRR!!!" Doop doop, de doop de doo doo, doop doop, de doop de doo doo.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44t3xc_XDes&feature=kp

Looking forward to the portugal germany game though.

  17. If they were exceptionally large ants, Metabo Oyaji, that would be well scary.

You didn't mention them again in the report, so perhaps they weren't.

Or... you were just lucky that the exceptionally large ants had moved on.

4:30am start! Harsh, I was Kipling for another 4 hours!

    Classic game! http://en.wikipedia....from_the_Desert

Also, gassan can now shove it. Sorry gassan. Love the pics and report, its been incredibly helpful. That snow looks rough.

  18. Seriously Ipps, Korea is a hell of a nicer place to live than ****ing mainland China.

Well thats definitely the plan though :) Also kinda glad im not in thailand at the minute! Would have been in bangkok teaching and had to put up with six months of bullshit followed by a coup.
