I’ve just spent a long weekend in the Tohoku prefecture of Miyagi, visiting Sendai, Matsushima and Ishinomaki, all of which were damaged in the March 11th earthquake and tsunami – the latter devastatingly so. Further along the coast is Matsushima, which is famous for its views of pine tree-clad islands, and is one of the fabled Three Views of Japan. Not only are the islands beautiful but they formed a natural barrier against the tsunami, so the area was far less damaged than nearby Ishinomaki. Here are a few pictures:-
