Nikko Yumoto Onsen is a ski area located in Nikko City in the western region of Tochigi Prefecture.
This ski area is on the east slopes of Mt Shirane in the Oku Nikko region of Nikko, about 30km from Nikko city centre and close to the border with Gunma Prefecture.
Nikko Yumoto Onsen ski area has three pair lifts, and the base is within walking distance from the onsen hot springs area of Oku Nikko Yumoto Onsen.
Marunuma Kogen ski area is on the western slopes of the same mountain range in Gunma Prefecture. However, the section of Route 120 connecting Tochigi with Gunma is closed during the winter. Consequently, Nikko Yumoto Onsen can only be reached from within Tochigi.
The northern shores of Lake Chuzenji (Chuzenjiko) are about 9km from Yumoto Onsen.

Nikko Yumoto Onsen usually plans to be open from late December until late March. See below for the actual opening and closing dates in recent seasons.
Normal opening times
Nikko Yumoto Onsen is normally open from 9:00am until 4:00pm on weekdays and Saturdays and from 8:30am until 4:00pm on Sundays and holidays. They also note that times may be extended on certain days.
Night skiing
There is no night skiing at Nikko Yumoto Onsen.
Families & children
The Child Hiroba area for young children is located by the base area and features sledding and tubing. Entry to the area is free.

Introduction to the region
Tochigi Prefecture is located in the Kanto region of the main island of Honshu. It is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in Japan and shares borders with Fukushima Prefecture, Ibaraki Prefecture, Saitama Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture.
Tochigi currently has three operating ski areas, all in the northern region of the Prefecture in Nikko City and Nasushiobara City.
Nikko Yumoto Onsen is one of 2 ski areas currently operating in Nikko City. The other is Edelweiss Ski Resort in the eastern region of the city.
