- Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 30th December 2015
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 92cm Posted on Wednesday 30th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa where snow was falling for most of yesterday. Not a huge number to report this morning with just over 10cm of fresh snow since my last report yesterday morning. Still it's all good and the snow over the last few days has given everywhere a needed breath of life. In just a few days we have gone from hardly anywhere being open to all resorts now being at least part open - and quite a few places are now boasting a 'mostly open' status. Generally you will find that courses that remain closed at this stage are steeper slopes that need more snow to be able to open. Otherwise, snow cover is good (if not particularly deep) and there is a lot of choice now. There may well be further un-announced course openings during the day as resorts deal with the ongoing situation. This morning light snow is continuing to fall as I write this report, though it is expected to ease off sometime this morning or early in the afternoon. I wouldn't expect much in terms of new cm. Lets take a look ahead at the forecast. Today once the snow clears is expected to be just cloudy with clearer skies overnight. Tomorrow might start with some sun and be milder than it has been but hopefully there might be more snow during the evening and as we enter 2016. After that there isn't a great deal of promise of snow through until early week and it will tend to be a bit milder - hopefully not too much, in which case there may be some rain involved around Sunday. We can only hope not. Anyway for now it should be a good day out on the slopes and I hope that if you are in Yuzawa or Minamiuonuma and reading this you can get to enjoy it. See you tomorrow morning. --- Resort operations (Wednesday 30th December 2015) - subject to change: Resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa The Central Area and most of the North Area are now open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 105cm Posted on Friday 1st January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning and a very Happy New Year to everyone reading this report and SnowJapan. I am happy to report a snowy start to 2016 with 12cm measured just before outside my place and it would seem resorts around town reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow on the slopes. The local forecast is for the snowfall to stop sometime this afternoon and maybe a clear night before a cloudy day tomorrow. It also tells us of these milder conditions that are still expected from Sunday through until maybe around Tuesday. Please don't warm up too much (and do not rain!) After today the next chance of snow is due around Tuesday evening. So here we are in 2016. Those of you who have been around a while will know how special December 2014 was... a magnificent 5.59m of snow falling in town as observed by your reporter. December 2015 of course was almost the opposite with a worrying lack of snow and mild conditions right until the last week. I observed 92cm in December 2015. If we look back to the year before you can see that it was 136cm for December 2013. Last year also saw less snow than the previous season in the month of January so it was kind of a switch-around of the 'usual' pattern: December 2013: 131cm (136cm running total for season) December 2014: 559cm (559cm running total for season) December 2015: 92cm (92cm running total for season) January 2014: 297cm (433cm running total for season) January 2015: 420cm (979cm running total for season) January 2016: ??? - Yuzawa Now: Monday 4th January 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 105cm Posted on Monday 4th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Those forecasts about weather being the stuff of March-April yesterday? They were right. It was like spring. Late spring almost! Objection. It was actually a lovely day with clear blue skies for most of the daytime... and warm, with Yuzawa hitting 10 degrees. You could almost see the snow melting. Some clouds formed later in the day yesterday and it was a mild evening dropping down to just +3 degrees in town overnight. (There was also a bit of drizzle as well in places). This morning the forecast has been for cloud again; but once again we are starting the day with clear skies and an almost hazy-like feel with the sun shining down on us. It's expected once again to warm up to around 10C degrees this afternoon. What is going on? As we haven't yet had the crazy deep snow that we are used to here, these weather conditions inevitably mean that snow is getting a bit thin on the ground especially on some lower slopes and areas. Basically it's a spring-like situation where you can expect better conditions and cover the higher you go. Happily, there is promise of a change coming soon. We may have to put up with a bit more rain and/or sleet starting later on today and overnight and then mild conditions again tomorrow (though not quite as warm as it has been). But then starting around Thursday it is due to get colder and we might be on for a run of a 4+ days of regular snowfall. What we really want is a good run of days of consistent snowfall, something that we usually don't have any problems getting. Fingers crossed! --- All resorts in the area are now generally open for the season, though please note that some areas and courses are not yet open. Generally steeper slopes that need more snow are still closed. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 424cm Posted on Saturday 23rd April 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . The sun is out and there is lots of blue sky this morning. Just a bit of cloud here and there and already a warm 18C degrees here in town. More fine weather is forecast for tomorrow so weather wise we are all good for the weekend it would seem. The big news today is that the GALA Yuzawa resort have made the decision that tomorrow - Sunday 24th April - is going to be their last day of the season. They will be open today and tomorrow with the Melody course (on snow mats) and a small sledge area remaining open. It almost seems inevitable with the snow situation that they have been faced with. That also means that from Monday morning it will be just Kagura that remains open. Their plan has always been to remain open until 29th May and they still have that on their official information, but with that over a full month away I think that there must be a fairly good chance that they also will be cutting that short. We shall see... Have a good weekend. --- Upcoming Golden Week holidays: * Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend) * Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week) * Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend) --- Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Saturday 23rd April 2016): GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa resort have announced that they will remain open until tomorrow, Sunday 24th April. The Melody course - with artificial 'snow mats' - and sledging area are open. Note that skiing and snowboarding on natural snow is now no longer possible at GALA. Kagura The Tashiro Ropeway plans to be open until 8th May. The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May. The Mitsumata area is now used as a 'connecting course' to get to and from the main Kagura area with some snow remaining, under which is the artificial 'snow brush'. Most of the main Kagura courses remain open with natural snow. Note that the top Kagura Number 5 pair lift will be open through Sunday 24th April. Official snow depth: Kagura area: 160cm Tashiro area: 130cm Mitsumata area: -cm --- Resorts that are not listed above are now closed for the season. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 419cm Posted on Saturday 19th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Yuzawa. I heard a bit of rain falling on the roof late last night and it was drizzly earlier on but right now it's just cloudy - the rain clouds currently seem to be doing their thing just to the north of us, hopefully they may stay there! The forecast though does warm of rain on and off for the day At 9am this morning it is 9 degrees but it's not forecast to warm up much more than that. Tomorrow there's a still a chance of light rain at times according to the local forecast, though less than today. We might be lucky to avoid it completely. It will not be as warm as well with temperatures generally dipping from tomorrow. Resorts are playing around with snow on lower areas to try and keep things going especially for this weekend - it's a 3-day weekend with Monday being a national holiday. I don't have any official news yet, but I would imagine after that we'll be hearing about some places closing next week. Higher up there's still plenty of snow to play in and those resorts will be open for quite a while yet of course. It will be interesting to see how long they can last this season, for example Kagura plans to go right through until the end of May (and in a normal season usually is able to). --- Resort official snow depths (Saturday 19th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: There are now lots of patches of ground on view showing through now on some lower slopes around town. Some more than others. Some courses/areas at resorts are now closed due to the snow situation. If you are planning on visiting, I recommended that you check with the individual resorts for their up-to-date details. You can fine their websites from the links below. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa where the day starts off just cloudy, and that is what the forecast is for much of the day really with a high of around 4C expected. The day is starting off fairly chilly though, currently around 0C. Yesterday soon after my report went up it was snowing properly and it was good to see it coming down. Not as much as we would have liked though with just a few cm on the ground around town and hopefully a bit more than that higher up. I notice this morning that Kagura are reporting 1-2cm of fresh, with both Naeba and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 5cm. There's the chance of occasional snow here and there still on the forecast over the next few days, but if and when it does snow I wouldn't expect much more than light snow like yesterday. Local forecasts seem to be pointing towards a largely sunny day tomorrow in fact. We can just hope that things don't warm up too much... --- Resort official snow depths (Thursday 10th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: After some very warm conditions recently, there are some patches of ground on view on some lower slopes around town now. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 2nd March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 415cm Posted on Wednesday 2nd March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday it was great to see a return to a proper winter-like day and that good-to-great new layer of snow on the ground which really gave the resorts a good refresh. It snowed for lots of yesterday, though wasn't particularly heavy for the most part and this morning there's another 7cm to add to what I observed yesterday morning. Light snow is falling at the moment and that's what we have forecast for this morning until sometime later on this afternoon or this evening. It should keep quite cold as well, so today should also be a great day to be out on the skis or board. As so often been the case this season though, annoyingly it looks like things are going to warm up from tomorrow. More worrying than there not being any snow on the weekly forecast are the warm temperatures due over the weekend... double digit temperatures are likely at town level, so it's very probably going to be another spring-like weekend. We can just hope that temperatures keep on the lower side of things to help protect the snow that we have... If you can get out onto the snow today or tomorrow even, rather than the weekend, it should be really good. And you'll have less people to share the snow with as well. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 424cm Posted on Friday 25th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . After the snow up high mentioned in my report yesterday, it's an even better one this morning. Snow falling yesterday for periods though it didn't really amount to anything at town level, but this morning I woke up to the sound of sprinklers and looked out of the window to see... 5cm of snow on the ground! That was a good surprise. And here's what the 'resorts that report' are reporting: Naeba: 30cm of fresh snowfall up top! Kagura: 20cm of fresh snowfall Maiko: 15cm of fresh snowfall Not bad at all! I think it's fair to say that all slopes will have got a layer of 10-30cm of fresh on them which is most welcome indeed. What's more, it's actually still snowing - though it's not really expected to continue beyond this morning. So yes, it is probably a very good morning to be heading up high and enjoy this late March snowfall. From tomorrow, we're expecting more in the way of sunshine and temperatures starting to gradually rise again. --- Naeba have announced that they will be open until Sunday 3rd April, which will be the last day of their season. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 31st March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 424cm Posted on Thursday 31st March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. It's another clear and light blue sky hazy kind of start to the day here. The sun is out, the pollen is flying, and after temperatures reaching as high as 19 degrees in the valley yesterday... the snow is melting pretty quickly. We actually got some rain last night though I don't think it lasted too long. It was coming down quite hard at one point though. So anyway, it's clear again this morning and it may not get quite as warm today. Warmer again tomorrow. And sunshine forecast for today, tomorrow and Saturday. Today is the last day of the season for the NASPA Ski Garden resort. Maiko Snow Resort have also announced that they will not be able to open on 9th/10th April as originally planned, so this coming Sunday (3rd April) will be the last day of their season. I'm not quite sure how the town level Yuzawa Park is able to remain open until now, but apparently they are. Official snow depth over there is 10cm but I suspect that it's 10cm less than that in most areas! Gambatte-imasu ne. --- Resort official snow depths (Thursday 31st March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Lower slopes around town now have little or no snow on them, though higher areas still enjoy good snow cover. Best to head high. Some of the below official snow depths seem a little... optimistic... with some surrounding areas at lower resorts closer to 0cm. Resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma: GALA Yuzawa Central Area and part of North Area remain open. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 15th March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 419cm Posted on Tuesday 15th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we ended up with (wet) snow falling on the mountains with both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. It has been more like a bit of slush around town really but good to hear of some fresh on the slopes. This morning we have been having more of that wet snow here - basically in lower areas it's raining/sleeting, and it's snowing higher up. There's also some wind this morning higher up that is affecting Kagura resort... all of Tashiro is closed this morning along with Kagura Number 4 and 5 lifts. All other resorts appear to be opening as planned this morning. Once the clouds start clearing up today - expected sometime afternoon - we're expecting things to start getting more spring like once again. Tomorrow and Thursday should see lots of sunshine and blue skies and warmer temperatures. Friday will be the warmest of the lot (up to around 12 degrees in town?), but a dip in temps again beyond that is due too. Unfortunately, rain is currently on the forecast for Saturday. Nighta operations at Maiko Snow Resort and Yuzawa Nakazato has now finished for the season. --- Resort official snow depths (Tuesday 15th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: After some very warm conditions recently, there are some patches of ground on view on some lower slopes around town now. Southern facing slopes are generally more affected. Some courses at resorts are closed due to the snow situation - best to check with the individual resorts for their up-to-date details. Snow cover is not a problem higher up. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It's a bright morning but I almost can't tell if it's just hazy or overcast. Or maybe both! But the sun is out and it's a warm morning already. Yesterday I was driving along Route 17 near Ishiuchi and the temperature message board said... 20C! Similarly warm conditions are forecast for today along with these sunny conditions continuing. Maybe slightly less warm tomorrow, but still sunny. Yesterday was also the last day of the season for NASPA Ski Garden and (not surprisingly) Yuzawa Park as well. A few more resorts plan to continue on until the end of Sunday and then we will just be left with Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen.
