The latest Niseko Now report can be found here About 5cm of new snowfall to report this morning though it looks from the report below that resort areas have seen up to 15cm of fresh up there. Less wind this morning, it feels nice and calm and while there's still cloud around there's lots of blue skies around. It's a lovely morning. Still, the chance of snowfall sometime later on today and also tomorrow as well. Things have of course calmed down since that magnificent run of snowfall until last week so let's take a breather and look at some of the numbers for January so far. Remember these numbers are observed snowfall, here in the Hirafu village area. -- 347cm of snow for January 2014 -- 60cm of that being in the last 7 days -- 740cm total for the 2013/2014 season so far The corresponding numbers as posted on January 21st 2013 were: -- 370cm of snow for January 2013 -- 123cm in the last 7 days -- 906cm total for the 2012/2013 season so far Last season JMA recorded 268cm of snow in Kutchan town for the whole of January. So far this January, that same number is on 228cm. Let's see how those numbers pan out come the end of the month! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -9C, 10cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -11C, wind SW5m/s. 15Cm new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -12C, 15cm new snow, minor snowdrift development, wind WSW8m/s. Annupuri peak1308m: -12.8C, wind WNW5.9m/s, wind predicted to be NW10m/s at noon. Hirafu 1000m: -11C, wind calm, 15cm new snow. Cape Benkei: NW7m/s, Cape Kamui: N8m/s, wave 0.6m, pressure 1011hPa. There is no significant pressure gradient and both ocean and mountain are calm. From current observation the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrols advice before going through the gates. This daily avalanche report is issued to help protect peoples right to enter the backcountry. The mountain contains many dangers, avalanches being just one danger. Beware trees, cracks and other hidden hazards. Make careful decisions without overconfidence and don’t rely too much on your equipment. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Hirafu. Another cold morning with a current temperature of -10 degrees and just a few cm of new snowfall to report and quite calm here at village level though the avalanche report tells us to to expect winds of around 10m/s around noon today. For now all resorts look set to go for the day. Weather conditions are currently cloudy with light snow being reported by Grand Hirafu but nothing major. Fingers crossed we'll get back into larger snowfall numbers from later on tomorrow. There's not much else to report really this morning, so until tomorrow! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -10C, 3cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -13C, wind W5m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -14C, 5cm new snow, no new snowdrift development, wind W10m/s. Annupuri peak1308m: -14.3C, wind W2.5m/s, wind predicted to be W10m/s at noon. Hirafu 1000m: -13C, trace new snow. Cape Benkei: NNW9m/s, Cape Kamui: NW 4m/s, wave 0.9m, pressure 1009hPa. Calm weather at both ocean and mountain. No obvious snow drift development. Generally the avalanche risk is low except for Kozon no sawa (back bowl) side walls. All gates are expected to open. Yesterdays tracks are not covered , be careful of falling and hitting trees. Cracks are hard to see from above, take care. Once you pass through the gates you are not in the ski area any more. Please follow the patrols advice. Be prepared. Do not duck ropes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here And a very good Christmas Eve morning to you all from Niseko. The main reason it's so good is because of the snow that we have been getting since my last report. Light, deep, dry and lots of it. What more could we want. So much for those forecasts, hey? Anyway. Yes, we have had over 30cm since my last report, more like 40cm outside my place here in Hirafu and surely up there on the mountain too. It's relatively calm too this morning and the snow is still falling. Have a fun day. It should be a really very good one! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6C, overnight snowfall 25cm, calm wind. Moiwa 800m: -7C, 30cm of fresh, calm wind. Annupuri 1150m: -10C, 30cm of fresh, moderate development of snowdrifts, wind-ripples. Slightly less snowfall in Hirafu. Coastal data: WNW9m/s, 1.7m waves and 1011hPa. Westerly wind under 10m/s is stagnating in 1000m area. According to observations and weather transition, the general avalanche hazard is low, however slab slides are to be considered in knolls and cornice slopes just under the ridgeline around 1100m. The snow in the trees is in good shape and gates are scheduled to open as they’re ready to. Gate 6 & 7 were open yesterday, but is subject to snow & weather conditions today. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Accessing the out of bounds areas is restricted when gates are closed. The snowpack is still insufficient, bushes and stumps are still lying just under the surface. Avalanches are not the only hazards in winter mountains. Do not overestimate knowledge and skills, ski/ride within your limits. The Niseko Rules flyer is available in multi-language. These Rules have been set to protect the freedom to ski out of bounds while keeping the minimum safety. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 20cm or so of fresh snowfall here in the Hirafu village area since my last report. Should be excellent snow conditions this morning, though visibility is limited at the moment due to the snow still coming down. It continues to get busier, though most everyone here now for New Year will now be here and putting the boots on to get out today. Expect generally busy-ness! And we can also expect snow to be falling for most of the New Year period. Doesn't feel particularly windy here, but it's another wind affected morning on mountain with resorts noting wind speeds of up to 18m/s (Annupuri), 17m/s (Niseko Village) and 15m/s (Hirafu) before 9am. A number of lifts are not running at the moment due to the wind conditions - check the listings below for the situation as I post this report. Niseko Grand Hirafu is now up to 2.5m with their official peak snow depth this morning after this latest snow. In the report tomorrow, I'll take a look at the snow fall we have had for the season so far and compare with last year, as well as taking a look at the Kutchan numbers. Let's see how they compare. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6C, 20cm of crushed and crystal snow, moderate development of snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: -10C, NW15m/s, notable development of snowdrifts in Mikaeri area. Annupuri 1150m: NW13-15m/s, -11C, developing snowdrifts. Annupuri peak 1308m: NW15.1m/s, -14.1C. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui cape: WNW13m/s, 2.7m waves, 1002hPa. Wintry pressure pattern is calming down, however relatively strong snow & westerly wind above 15m/s is persisting above 800m. Snowdrifts are heavily developing in leeward cornice & knoll terrains of O-sawa, Backbowl, Higashi-One and Mikaeri bowl. The snowpack is yet to stabilize and the alavanche risk is high. Peak gates and gate 1, 4 & 5 will be closed. Many of the avalanche accidents occur during and just after storms. Do not duck ropes to step out of bounds. The snowfall amount is not necessarily related to the occurrence of avalanches, a slope will slide if the conditions allows and becomes an accident if a person is involved in it. The newly formed slabs will stabilize and become appropriate to ski once some time passes after the wind calms down below 10m/s. However, everyone should keep in mind that there is no 100% safety in winter mountains. The Niseko Rules have been implemented based on past tragedies. We strongly ask everyone to respect the Rules. Please follow the ski patrol’s instruction. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have 15-20cm of snow to report. Hard to put a number on it due to the strong winds that were blowing it around, though wind down at base has calmed down at the moment. Still winds are affecting some lifts at the resorts, as noted below. As I said the winds that we got yesterday and last night have blown snow around meaning that there'll be places where it's deep and places where it's less so. Caution needed, be careful out there. There should be some great conditions to be found though this morning. At the moment it's cloudy with light snow falling this morning but stopping as I write this. But taking a look at the forecast, hopefully it will be snowing or soon snowing through until 2014. Fingers crossed wind doesn't play too much of a part in proceedings. So it's a weekend again and then soon after New Year. There's lots of people around now as you would expect, and a fun lively atmosphere. Fun to be had both on and off the slopes. Hope you enjoy it. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -4C, 20cm of crushed particle snow and moderate development of snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: -5C, north-easterly wind & snow, notable development of snowdrifts and cornices. Annupuri 1150m: NNW17m/s, 70cm of very unstable snowdrifts, -10C. Annupuri peak 1308m: N21.9m/s, -10C. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE15m/s, Kamui cape NNE14m/s, 5.1m waves, 995hPa. Developing wintry weather pattern is generating heavy snowfall and high winds. The mountain is under a big storm. Snowdrifts are developing drastically and the avalanche hazard is rising in all altitude. Better stay away from knolls, cornices and steep terrains today. Avalanches are most likely to occur during and just after storms. 50-100cm thick slides triggered by internal weak lines within the newly formed Dec 27th layer are to be expected in leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift deposit above 800m. All peak gates will be closed today. Please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Nitonupuri, Shiribetsudake, Mt.Yotei and all other surrounding peaks are also in very hazardous conditions. Cautious and meticulous planning is required for all mountain activities during this weekend. Better not venture too far. The snow in the trees is good, but visibility can be very bad. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here About another 5-10cm of snow to add this morning. I say about as the wind has been at work and been blowing it all about again. Yesterday winds affected lift operations on the mountain, causing a few bottlenecks at times. Unfortunately it looks like it's going to be a similar story today. Let's try to forget the wind though and talk about the snow. It was snowing for most of the day and some nice deep to be found. Snow is forecast through the coming week, with temperatures set to drop over New Year and potentially heavy snowfall on the way. Come prepared! --- For December 2012, the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) reported 306cm of snowfall in the town of Kutchan. This month, with two days to go including today, they are on 252cm. So just over 50cm to go before we can match last years number. (Not that it actually really matters of course!) And remember that is for Kutchan town, not up on the mountains which get more. Looking at our own numbers from our Niseko Now reports - we have recorded 383cm of snowfall since the beginning of this season including 260cm during the month of December. These numbers coming from the Hirafu base area and can be found towards the bottom of each report. Last year for the month of December we recorded 418cm, and a total of 536cm for November-December. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -4C, 10cm of crushed crystal snow. Moiwa 800m:-7C, WSW20m/s, snowdrift development of up to 100cm. Annupuri 1150m: NW25m/s, heavy snowdrift developments, -11C. Annupuri peak 1308m: wind data n/a, -8.5C. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW19m/s, Kamui cape WSW16m/s, 2.3m waves, 1001hPa. 1500m wind forecast at noon: westerly 20m/s. Wintry pressure pattern persists, generating strong westerly wind above 800m altitude. Extreme avalanche hazard in the Back bowl, Osawa, Higashi-One’s leeward cornice slopes and steep faces. All peak gates will be closed, please respect the ski patrol’s instructions. Wishful thinking can be dangerous. Overconfidence and presumption lead to accidents. The reason for opening/closing the gates is not to restrict the freedom of out of bounds skiing but to ensure minimum safety of all resort users. We strongly demand everybody to respect the Niseko Rules. Do not duck ropes. The snow in the trees is in excellent condition. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was milder overnight and this morning we have a new delivery of 5cm or so of snow on the ground. Not the best kind of snow though with the milder temperatures brings a wetter variety. Mixed conditions this morning with some sun and blue skies visible through the clouds at times. The main thing today will probably be the winds. Just before 9am a few lifts were not moving due to wind and a few running at reduced speed - see below. Stronger winds are forecast for late morning into the afternoon and so there may well be more closed. Looks like lots of snowfall is on the way though along with colder temperatures. Starting later today. Should be a good weekend. Out on the mountain it was all gates open yesterday. As the signs say, these are 'Out of management areas' which basically means that you enter at your own risk. Be sure you know what you are doing, ideally go with someone else who knows what they are doing, and be adequately equipped. Be safe. And remember them there Niseko Rules, often mentioned in the Avalanche Reports below and outlined here. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: 0C, 6cm of wet snow. Moiwa 800m: calm wind and 10cm of new snow, -2C. Annupuri 1000m: -7C, W13m/s. 1308m: -6.5C, NW3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSW3m/s, Kamui cape: SSW16m/s, 1.6m waves, 996hPa. The weather is calm for now. Warm air is flowing into the coming low-pressure and isobars are momentarily spaced out. However, a northerly blizzard is forecasted to start before noon above 800m. Snowdrifts will develop drastically as the storm kicks in and leeward wind-affected slabs avalanche hazard will rise. Conditions will completely change from yesterday. Peak gates will be closed, please follow the ski-patrol’s instructions. Shallow slab avalanches from Dec 26th layer are also to be expected in steep slopes under lift lines and cliff areas. Although shallow, today’s snow is heavy and consequences can be critical if caught in. Caution. The snow in the trees between 600 and 1000m is good fun. Beware of hitting trees. Avalanche risk will rise for the next couple of days. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Up to 5cm of new snow this morning to report from Hirafu, but the snow is coming down early on this morning and we should be seeing new cm today. Better news than that though is that this morning doesn't seem to be as windy and there is - at the start of the day anyway - less lift disruption. In fact, by the looks of things the lifts on the mountain should be pretty much operating as normal this morning. Snow still forecast through into next week. Stronger winds may be back tomorrow, so check the forecasts tonight and then decide if a sleep in might be a good idea! There will after all be a lot of partying tonight here, as you might expect. Considerable development of snowdrifts in Mikaeri area. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW11m/s, Kamui cape N10m/s, 2.2m waves, 1005hPa. Wind forecast at noon: WSW15m/s. The isobars are spacing out and the wind is calming down since early this morning. The snowdrifts are slowly stabilizing. The avalanche hazard is still high, though should settle down in the afternoon. Gates opening still undecided. Some ridgelines are wind-blown crusty and hard to ski. The avalanche risk will remain considerable all day in obvious avalanche terrains such as leeward steep slopes under cornices of Osawa, Backbowl and HigashiOne. It is strongly recommended not to go in those places even after the gate opening. Avalanche accidents often occur just after storms. Dropping into steep slopes right after a strong storm is very dangerous. Today, the snow-slab above Dec 27th (up to 80cm thick) could let go and trigger a large surface slab avalanche. Ask the ski patrol for advice and be careful. Have you switched your beacon on? Avalanche gear isn't a fashion accessory, just wearing them won’t save your life. Be aware of the risk you’re taking. Surrounding peaks around Niseko area are all in same hazardous conditions today. Carefully choose your touring route. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Hirafu. Yesterday wasn't the amazing blue sky day we got on the 24th, but a fine day all the same with good conditions to be found. It's another fairly morning here - just a light wind at the moment - and it's relatively mild, with the thermometer just about rising above 0C at the moment. Just a cm or so of new snow to report this morning. It has been trying hard to snow ever so lightly, but not quite getting there just now. There's even hints of the sun through the clouds at times. I was out for some nighta last night. Very quite it was too. I suspect there might have been some partying going on last night, but it left the runs all to the few people who made it out. I got the best of both worlds - the nighta and the party afterwards! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -3C, 5cm of new snow. Moiwa 800m: -4C, 5cm of fresh and calm wind. Annupuri 1150m: -11C, W13m/s, light covering of new snow. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW8m/s, Kamui cape SW10m/s, 1m waves and 1018hPa. Annupuri peak 1308m: -7.8C, WSW4.9m/s. Calm morning and characteristic crystal snowfall of pre-low pressure weather pattern. This layer of snow (Dec 26th) will form a notable, potentially sliding layer in the future snowpack. Beware of coming snowfall transition. All gates are scheduled to open today, please pay attention to the ski patrol’s advices when stepping out of bounds. Always use the gates and never duck ropes. Out of bounds area is outside the resort management. Winter mountains are hazardous at all time: self-responsibility and precise reasoning is required when going out there. Carrying safety equipment is strongly recommended. Ski the fall line to minimize unnecessary stimulation to the slope, traversing across slopes under cornices is foolish and could trigger a slide, burying people underneath you. Stay away from valley bottom to avoid secondary accident. Today’s general avalanche risk is low and the snow in the trees is good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun came out yesterday and it quite quickly transformed into a very fine day. Sunny with almost clear blue skies. Lovely. A great day. And Santa seemed to enjoy himself as well. Good skier too. Anyway, back to this morning. There is about 5cm of new snow to report after we had some snow overnight and it's a nice cold morning, currently around -4C here at base. It's an overcast cloudy feel to the morning, though a few breaks in the cloud especially out towards Mt Yotei so who knows it might start clearing once again like yesterday. Next snowfall due into Friday and through the weekend. There may well be some sore heads this morning but no doubt people will quickly surface to enjoy the mountain. Hope you have an excite Christmas, wherever you are reading this from. All the best. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -5C, 5cm of fresh snow. Moiwa 800m: -6C, 10cm of fresh, calm. Annupuri 1150m: -6C, NW5m/s, 5cm of fresh. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW12m/s, Kamui cape NW5m/s, 1.8m waves and 1021hPa. A westerly wind is stagnating around under 10m/s at 1500m altitude. According to data eveluation, snowfall transition and observations, no drastic development of snowdrifts can be observed and the general avalanche risk is low except in knolls ad cornice slopes. 40cm slab avalanche is to considered in 1000m Osawa & Backbowl cornice area. Slab slides from Dec 24th is also to be considered in Haruno Taki (strictly off-limits) due to yesterday’s sunshine. Gate 1 is scheduled to open today. Travering all the way across the bowl to the cornices is totally thoughtless.The snow in the trees hasn’t ben reset, but still soft and nice. Beware of hitting trees and falling into creeks. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Happy New Year! Celebrations aplenty in the area last night (some probably still going on) and some fireworks to bring in the New Year. I don't know if I was imagining it, but there seemed to be less people up and out and about around 8am when I was walking through the village. Can't think why! We have 10-15cm or so of new snow as well since my last report, though it's a fairly mild morning hovering around 0C and not the most light and fluffy variety. Down here anyway, a bit heavy. It was snowing earlier but eased off as I write this report. But snow is forecast for the day, and tomorrow and the day after and... well, basically for the coming week. If the forecasts are right, we won't be seeing a whole lot of the sun. Temperatures should dip as well later on today so we'll be back to the cold and I would imagine some fine quality snow will be delivered. I can't go without mentioning the wind. From the get go a few lifts aren't moving (see below) and stronger winds likely later on in the day. So there may well be disruption on the mountain and if you are planning on being out there an advance check is highly recommended. It's probably not going to calm down much in that respect tomorrow, though hopefully the snow conditions will make up for that. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -2C, 5cm of new snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -4C, 10cm of new snow, moderate development of snowdrifts, westerly 10m/s wind. Annupuri 1000m: -5C, 5cm of new snow, westerly wind picked up from 5am 15m/s, development of snowdrifts. Coastal data: benkei cape WSW7m/s, Kamui cape S16m/s , 1m waves, 991hPa. Peak wind forecast at noon: westerly 18m/s. Light pre-low pressure snowfall and wind-drift snow accumulation is small. The snowpack has stabilized except in upper area of 1000m leeward cornice & knoll slopes. The overall avalanche risk is low. A January 1st layer will form in the future snowpack due to temperature change. A westerly wind is forecasted to pick as the low pressure passes. Gates opening is still undecided. Please respect the ski patrol decisions. The snow condition is ever changing. Hazard evaluation in Niseko is based on the snowfall transition and snowpack observations. Avalanches are likely to occur during storms and become an accident if a person happens to be there. This information is published to protect the freedom to ski/ride the backcountry, but at the same time, to also protect the general safety of all resort users. We are hoping that everyone makes good use of it and respect the Niseko Rules. Beware of sudden weather changes today. The snow in the trees is nice. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 15-20cm of fresh snow to report this morning, where I can measure it anyway. Winds are still with us. Yesterday was something of a wild day in terms of weather conditions. It didn't start off too bad, and great snow conditions to be found, but around mid morning things got worse and we were treated to strong winds and a bit of thunder and lightning as well just to add to the drama. The Annupuri area closed completely from just after 10am due to the weather conditions. The quad and Jumbo number 2 lifts managed to open again just before noon, only to close very soon after and that was it for the day. They did try! The Country Road and Morino Chair lifts at Niseko Village were closed just after noon, and over at Hirafu the gondola stopped around 3pm, but was able to open again just after 4pm into nighta. The Hanazono area ended up closed from around 2pm. Unfortunately we still have strong winds to deal with and this morning the Annupuri area is closed and waiting to see if conditions improve. The other areas are open with a few lifts affected, as noted below. Subject to change during the day of course. Snowfall and cold conditions are still on the forecast through into next week, so when the winds don't mess things up we should be looking at very fine conditions every day. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6C, 20cm of wind-affected crushed crystal snow and notable development of snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: NW16m/s, stormy, -10C, considerable development of snowdrifts. Annupuri 1150m: NW16-20m/s, -11C, considerable development of snowdrifts, hard wind-packed snow in high altitude. Heavy snow and high wind with considerable snowdrifts development in Hirafu area. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW19m/s, Kamui cape WNW19m/s, 2.4m waves, 999hPa. A strong wintry weather pattern is generating heavy snowfall and high winds, making considerable snowdrift developments in leeward slopes. Avalanche risk is extreme today. All peak gates will be closed. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The avalanche hazard will remain high for a little while after the storm calms down. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh lines. Do not traverse across steep slopes or slopes under cornices. Stay away from valley bottoms. Ski one by one, not all at once. Never enter strictly off-limits area. Value the Niseko Rules to protect the freedom to go out of bounds. The snow in the trees is heavy but pretty good.
