Leaving us with just mainly cloud for the moment and hints of blue sky in places. Sunny skies are forecast for tomorrow and perhaps temperatures might hover around zero during the day, but the forecast still teases us with the prospect of some potentially decent snowfall come Wednesday night and through into the weekend. Let's hope it is more than just a tease! Today is the last day of the long 3-day weekend here in Japan, so there's more people around than usual... but it should start getting quieter by this afternoon. And the snow of the previous days means that it should be a really good morning to be out there. The new snow I am posting this morning is from yesterday since I posted the last report, there was no more overnight. Not much snow on the forecast now, perhaps a bit tomorrow night, so we might get a few sprinklings at times between the sunny skies that are likely in the coming week. Temperatures may rise a bit but happily it doesn't look like there's a big warm-up due just yet. Keep cold please! Good morning from Shiga Kogen and there's more snow to report this morning. 4cm outside my place and I am hearing people talk of anything up to 10cm this morning. And the snow isn't due to let up just yet either, perhaps continuing into tomorrow. It is snowing now but it's quite bright and visibility - here in the Maruike area at least - is pretty good. There is 1 week left for all of the resort area of Shiga Kogen to remain open. Apparently, the ones planning to close would do so even if we got 50cm in one night. Hardly likely of course, I wonder if that did actually happen they might be tempted! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . More fresh snow! It has been a good few days with snow falling and giving us a decent refresh of the slopes. It feels more like mid-winter than it does late March (kind of the opposite of many days during mid season!) Snow is still falling from the skies as I write this though it's also quite bright and good visibility for the moment. It probably won't last beyond today though with sun forecast over the weekend and while it will not be as cold as today it should be keeping pretty cold tomorrow especially. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day started slow, but now we can't see with the heavy snow falling—pelting, crashing, screaming—down. The massive, once-in-25-years low pressure centered over Hokkaido is bringing high winds along the coast and up on the northern island, and steady snowfall here. No report yesterday, because maybe I didn't want to tell you it was raining/slushy. There was about 30cm of fresh this morning, so that's the fall for the record. There will definitely be more for tomorrow - the forecast for this region was around 70cm, and it could be more... The two open resorts are not sharing good information today (-3 cm and no change? Wrong, boys, wrong). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This is being written during a mid snow clearing coffee break; there is a lot of snow out there to clear, and I'm the one to do it. I am not sure how much snow was on the ground this morning; there was considerable blowing and drifting, and the snow was pretty heavy and wind-packed. It was somewhere around a meter, but what to say officially... 70cm? 80cm? At least the cars are moving here, even if our windows are still completely filled in (snow reaching to the eaves; low, I'll admit, but still more than two and a half meters tall). The sun did come out for one moment, and was immediately welcomed by insane winds that completely obscured the roads, but which disappeared as the snow came back in. Ah, the wonders of nature. One word from the wife: a friend reported that there was no one at Akakura Onsen yesterday. Take advantage of this snow, people! Warm up for the season—in powder! The roads are in pretty good shape, actually (OK, you'll have to dig out your car, but..... A meter of snow! One more cup of coffee, and back out to drive the snow-wrangling beast. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow overnight and continuing to fall in Myoko. Big, crystally flakes; can we say it's perfectly Christmassy? (Merry Christmas, readers!) Nice stuff that's easy to shovel—and, of course, to ski on/in. Hopefully it will keep going through the day, as we can still use a bit more base, particularly for those who want to head into the backcountry. It's still pretty bushy out there, and valleys are not completely filled in yet—be careful with this light snow on a firm base. The forecast was for some sun, at least from midday, but apart from a brief moment where it got a little brighter there's no sign of things stopping at the moment. Not a lot of fresh snow since last night, but it's coming down pretty well now. Should be nice and soft on the slopes (I would be out there, except the mighty snowthrower has decided not to turn over this morning.... the old Myoko story of waiting for the repair guys). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another snow cycle has moved in, with some nice stuff falling from about 7:30 this morning. It's a pretty common pattern: some sunny skies, a day of light rain, then things get colder and the snow starts to fall. When we really get into January I hope the other main weather pattern—snow all the time—kicks in! I'm just reporting 5cm of fresh so far; there will be more during the day; at the moment the rate has picked up to where we might get 2cm or more per hour. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow through the day yesterday — a little wet down low, drier and nice higher up. Not a huge accumulation so far - maybe 20cm of fresh - but it looks like some heavy snow is moving in, from tonight into tomorrow. Don't know if it will be the "historic" snowfall that the media was predicting earlier in the week (and historic here could be scary big snow), but looks like a good serving in time for your New Year's enjoyment. It's also a little bit warmer today, although that also looks likely to change soon!
