A lot of cloud remained with us yesterday but we did get some blue sky as well and the sun was out for lots of the afternoon. On to this morning and we had some very light snow slowly falling earlier this morning and resorts have a bit more to report with a slight dusting at base: Happo-one: 5cm (Riesen) Hakuba Goryu: 3cm Hakuba 47: 1cm around base; 5cm up top Hakuba Cortina: 1cm Looks like early on the mountains are shrouded in cloud (fog?) and visibility is poor, though I would expect there's a good chance that it might clear up again similarly to yesterday. Light snow showers possible during the today. We're expecting things to start warming up again from tomorrow and there will very probably be lots of sun in the coming week. Last day of the season for Hakuba Cortina today. Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. Upper - 210cm Toomi - 50cm Hakuba 47: Plans to be open until early May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and the snow we were hoping for has arrived, well sort of. Just sprinklings at base - roads are clear - but resorts reporting fresh snow on the mountains. Here's what the resorts are reporting this morning... Happo-one: 5+cm Hakuba Goryu: 3cm at Toomi; 10cm up top Hakuba 47: 1cm around base; 5cm up top Hakuba Cortina: 15-20cm Cortina doing well with up to 20cm up there, looks like more like 5-10cm around the Hakuba hills. It's much better than 0cm that's for sure! And it is certainly colder than it has been this morning. It's not snowing now and just cloudy really. Some hints of blue sky even so it might clear up. Snow clouds may stick in the region though through tomorrow so we might get a bit more out of this. Once we get to Monday it would seem warmer conditions and sun will be back, so this really might just be the last snow we see this season. Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. It was a cold night but today we might see it warm up to around 15 degrees in the village according to some local forecasts. A weekend of sunny skies is likely and beyond that too; the weather seems settled into spring now. Let's spring skiing and boarding! Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. We were expecting sun this morning but to start the day off there's lots of cloud, it's rather dull and actually poor visibility up on the mountains by the looks of the webcams. Forecasts still say it's sun for the day, so perhaps it will clear up this morning. High temps or around 10C expected. Mixed forecasts for tomorrow as well with some telling us to expect some rain, others not. They agree that it will probably be warmer tomorrow though. No sakura to report yet! Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. Top area open, Champion Expert closed, Toomi used to get back to base though very narrow! Iimori area closed. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was a beautiful day in Hakuba yesterday. Almost borderline warm as well in the early afternoon. The mountains were looking spectacular with white topped background with the remaining colours of autumn at village level. Great stuff. See photo attached to this report. For the record, the first snow recorded falling up at the top of Goryu was on 2nd November. (All gone now for the moment). It has been changeable over the last few weeks with things being getting very cold at times. Stoeves are ready, gardens are being prepared for the winter and all of the locals are busy busy making their last minute preparations for the coming busy winter season. And it's not too far away now. Looks like we are heading for some colder conditions tomorrow with some cold rain forecast later in the day... and the chance of a bit of sleet or snow as well if we are lucky. Whether that will come down to near village level or not, we'll just have to see. The snow season is just around the corner now though with the first lifts hoping to be moving in just a few weeks time. Once we get to the later part of the month it's all a case of when they can start moving. Hakuba Now will be with you this season as well, and we'll do our best to provide you with fun and fact-filled reports every day. Gambarimasu. Not that much going on down at village level for the most part, coming down nicely at one point yesterday evening, but better news higher up on the mountains. Yesterday Happo was reporting 20+cm of nice quality dry fresh snowfall up around Kurobishi and Usagidaira. There's snow down by the side of roads in the village this morning as well, I would say around 5cm or so in places. Light snow in the village; heavy snow in the mountains is what Happo guys have been saying. Nice. But we want more! Resorts around the village are of course largely on stand-by and you can be sure that as soon as there's enough snow they'll be getting lifts moving. Who will be first?! With snow on the forecast right through from today until Sunday - and looking like it might be decent snowfall too at times - I think we might be seeing the first action pretty soon. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . More snow to report this morning and I'm happy to report that today marks the official start of the season in Hakuba with Happo-one part opening from 9am this morning. The Adam Gondola lift at Happo will start moving at 9am this morning. That and the Kokusai Number 1 lift take you up to the ski-able area - which is the Panorama Course. The Kokusai Number 3 and Panorama lifts will be open (from 9:10am) up there. It's cold and poor visibility so if you are going to head out, be prepared! Snow clouds are expected to be with us at least until Sunday, so here's to all that snow we are waiting for. I have been trying to find out about any more possible openings early this morning with other resorts but haven't been able to confirm anything. With the snow continuing to fall I would definitely expect more to be happening tomorrow. Some bits of info just for now: 10cm or so of snow at base areas and counting. Happo-one are reporting 30cm of snowfall and a temperature of -5 degrees at the Usagidaira area of the resort, with heavy snow falling up there. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 9:30AM Hakuba Goryu is open as well, and fittingly are also opening their Panorama Course up top - the Gondola gets you up there and the Alps Number 1 lift is servicing the run. Open until 4pm. They are reporting 80cm of snow. Cost is 2500 yen for adults and 1350 yen for children. Tsugaike Kogen are also open this morning with the Han-no-ki pair lift moving and the Gondola lift getting you there. They are reporting 100cm of snow on the upper slopes this morning. (Sadly, they don't also have a 'Panorama Course' to open. They should make one. ;)) As of 9am, Hakuba 47 were in the process of checking everything and planning to announce their plans this afternoon. They have even hinted at the chance of a 'full open' from tomorrow. Depending on snow conditions of course. RESORT INFO UPDATE AT 12:45PM The Hakuba 47 resort have made their announcement, and excite it is too. They are planning to be almost-all-open ('hobo zenmen') tomorrow and Sunday with it possible to ski or board from top to bottom. And presumably beyond Sunday as well! Yey. More snow this morning - though not a huge amount - and for the moment as I write this it's cloudy but snow is forecast to continue on and off through the day today, maybe easing off by tomorrow. With the continued snow there's lots to report this morning, so let's get right to it. Happo-one Happo has 4 lifts moving this morning and more runs opening, as noted below. The resort is reporting snow depth of 15cm at base and 85cm at Usagidaira, with 15cm of fresh snow at Usagidaira this morning. Open lifts: -Kokusai Number 3 -Panorama -Alpen Quad -Kurobishi Number 2 Quad -Adam Gondola and Kokusai Number 1 lifts open to take people up to the open area Open courses: -Panorama -Usagidaira -Kurobishi (part) -- Hakuba 47 Hakuba 47 is almost all open this morning from 8am. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I was just over at Hakuba 47 where there's about 10cm of fresh snow on the ground. Happo-one are reporting 45cm of snow at Usagidaira and 10cm on lower slopes. Goryu and 47 were both yesterday mentioning 30-40cm of snow higher up... No news on lifts opening or firm plans for opening just yet at the moment, but we're nearly there! It's forecast to get slightly warmer later today with a chance of snow changing to rain - down here in the village anyway, will surely remain snow higher up - but with snow still generally forecast through tomorrow and into the weekend... yes, we're nearly there. EXCITE INFO UPDATE AT 1PM: Happo-one have announced that they will open tomorrow - Friday 5th. The Panorama course will be open. Getting up there via the Gondola and the Kokusai Number 1 lifts with the Kokusai Number 3 and Panorama lifts servicing the open area. Hurray! They plan to get the Gondola into action at 9am (until 4pm). Expect more news when I post a new proper report tomorrow morning... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It is a fine middle of the day here with the sun out and lots of blue sky, which is far preferable to all that rain of the last few days. Ski runs are all looking rather bare now with the snowline retreating back up the mountain. Today and tomorrow we expect highs of around 12-13 degrees here in the village... more sun tomorrow. Looks like we might get rained on again before the snow arrives, but things are looking encouraging for snow around Tuesday 2nd. Ski and snowboard resorts triple checking everything with Happo, 47, Goryu and Tsugaike ready to go as soon as there's enough snow. Hopefully that will be next week. I'm happy to report that the Prefectural Road 33 - the one that that connects Hakuba with Nagano city - is now re-open. It sounds like some more repairs are needed in the Horinouchi area, but the road is passable. I'm sure that any further fixes will be made quickly. That road the gateway to Hakuba from Nagano and so lots of people use it and it's an important one to be open. The rain didn't do us any favors yesterday in terms of melt and snow conditions... but quickly and happily moving on, snow is about to make another hopefully dramatic entrance. For those of you in Japan you might have seen on the news about the winter low pressure weather pattern that is about to hit Japan and bring with it lots of snow. We're probably going to get our fair share, and hopefully more - it's lining up to be a very snowy weekend. There's another wave of snow due mid week next week as well. So hopefully we will soon not need to be talking about which lifts and courses are open - because they'll soon all be open. That's the plan anyway. Weather this morning? It's 0 degrees, and there's a few cm of snow on the ground in places from overnight, but while it has been snowing very lightly it's just cloudy right now. Looks like really bad visibility on the mountains early on this morning. The snow I keep on going on about (see above) is due to start later on today, perhaps this evening, so I am crossing all fingers that we'll have something decent to report tomorrow morning. Hakuba Norikura Onsen, Kashimayari and Hakuba Cortina all planning on being part open from tomorrow. I'll try to bring details of that in my report tomorrow (sorry if that means it might be a bit later - so much to check!) -- Happo-one Part of upper areas open. Official Snow depths: Base - 20cm Usagidaira - 85cm Open lifts: -Kokusai Number 3 -Panorama -Alpen Quad -Kurobishi Number 2 Quad -Adam Gondola open to take people up to the open area. Open courses: -Panorama (part) -Usagidaira -Kurobishi (part) -Please note, can't ski back down to base. -- Hakuba 47 I think I'm reading this correctly - due to lack of staff, Line E won't be opening today (!), but Line C is open once again. Hakuba 47 plans to be fully open from tomorrow, Saturday. Official Snow depths: Base - 20cm Upper - 80cm Open courses: -Route 1 Upper -Route 1 Lower -Route 2 -Route 3 -Route 5 -Route 6 -Route 7 -Route 8 -The Tree Riding Zone is not open yet. Open lifts: -Gondola -Line A -Line C -- Hakuba Goryu The top area of Hakuba Goryu is open. Goryu is reporting 3cm of fresh snow on upper slopes and 2cm in the Iimori area. Open area remains unchanged for the moment. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A cloudy day forecast today with snow at times, one of those times being now and it will be staying cold not straying too far above the zero mark. We're expecting clearer and warmer and sunny conditions again tomorrow. Later in the week though all eyes on that cold and snowy winter pattern that seems to be scheduled to arrive over Hakuba and also quite a few other areas on the Japan Sea side of Japan. Looks like it could bring with it quite a lot of snow. Would be good! Hakuba 47 reporting no fresh snowfall on the mountain overnight though there was some that came down during the day yesterday. Goryu reporting 3cm, while Happo-one mention 5cm at Usagidaira. --- Happo-one Reporting 5cm of new snow at Usagidaira, few at base since yesterday.
