  • Yuzawa Now: Friday 14th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 515cm Posted on Friday 14th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Light snow on and off again this morning so far - just a few cm overnight and that's pretty much what the skijo are reporting as well, including Kagura. As I write this, it's just cloudy and about -3 degrees in the Yuzawa town area. Are we on for a storm and heavy snow in the next 48 hours? There are warnings of snow on the Kanto plains again today and Tokyo might once again be in for snowfall. Last time that happened we didn't get a huge amount here. What about this time? It's difficult to say, some of the forecasts are looking very promising for decent snowfall tonight and through tomorrow as well. But others are less optimistic about the snow and even tell us of the chance of sleet or rain down in town during the day tomorrow when it should remain oddly mild. (Some forecasts even having temps rising to +6 in the afternoon tomorrow!) So it's really not clear what's going to happen. We hope for the heavy snow, obviously. It's useless and only trouble in Tokyo - so bring it over here! What is clear is that tomorrow morning I'll update this and let you know how things are going. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 14th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 223cm Gala Yuzawa: 290cm Iwappara: 175cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 175cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 255cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 14th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 515cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 43 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 82cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 17th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 582cm Posted on Monday 17th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . A few cm of snow on my car this morning but it looks like more on the mountain with Kagura reporting 10-20cm, Naeba reporting 5cm, Maiko reporting 20cm. Snow and wind on and off yesterday, both strong at times. The sun was out and some blue skies over the region for a short while as well in the middle of all that lot. A pretty wild weekend for the most part. The good thing out of it being the snow refresh we have received. There is probably 70cm or so added to the snow bank near where I live since the beginning of the weekend. Must be good for the resorts - though keep in mind avalanche risk will have increased. Still windy enough this morning for Tashiro to be closed and Kagura only open from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura No1 pair lift. Over at GALA Yuzawa, the South Area is closed (due to the volume of snow - hopefully they'll deal with that quickly) but the Central and North areas are open as normal. This means of course that the Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is not running. Moderate snowfall at the moment as of 10am this morning with up to 5cm expected before 4pm. Snow showers is the forecast for today and tomorrow. Traffic problems persist with the Kanetsu Expressway still closed this morning from Yuzawa down to just north of Tokyo. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 17th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 250cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 350cm Iwappara: 250cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 240cm Yuzawa Park: 260cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 280cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 17th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 582cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 149cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 18th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 602cm Posted on Tuesday 18th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It hasn't stopped snowing much at all recently, though the snowfall is less intense than it was on Saturday in particular. This has definitely been the strongest showing for snow - and continued snow - this season though and it has been piling up. This morning Kagura report 10-20cm and Maiko are reporting 30cm. They are the new snow numbers coming in so far from resorts, and there's 20cm or so where I am. So there's another decent refresh on the slopes out there. As mentioned before with the transport issues, resorts have generally been less busy than you'd expect them to be, so there's lots of untouched snow out there right now. Still quite strong winds and Tashiro is once again closed today. Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 romance lift is what is open at Kagura this morning. GALA Yuzawa still has the Central and North areas open, but the South Area remains closed. From what I can tell early on other resorts are opening as planned. It is about -3 degrees now at 8:30am. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 607cm Posted on Wednesday 19th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Snow on and off for most of the day yesterday along with some blowy winds making it feel colder than it actually was. There was one point around lunchtime when a bit of blue sky appeared but it was soon covered up by the next clouds moving in. Just around 5cm to report this morning with resorts reporting up to 10cm (Kagura) early on. It is still snowing at the moment but in the last half hour or so visibility has improved a bit and the forecast is mostly for cloudy conditions today so I wouldn't expect much snow today. After being at least part closed the last few days, Kagura is fully open this morning - so there should be some great powder to track up there this morning. Currently -3C in Yuzawa. Cloud or clear conditions probably tomorrow. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 19th February 2014, AM: Some resorts not updated for the day yet Naeba: 280cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 305cm Gala Yuzawa: 360cm Iwappara: 260cm Yuzawa Kogen: 330cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 250cm Yuzawa Park: 260cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 300cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Wednesday 19th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 607cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 48 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 174cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 21st February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 617cm Posted on Friday 21st February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Yuzawa. It didn't get that cold overnight last night, only down to around -1 degree and that's where we are now at 9am. Some snow overnight - up to around 10cm in some places around town - and it wasn't snowing just a while ago but has started up again. There's a moderate northerly wind at the moment too. Snow is forecast for the day and on and off through tomorrow as well though the cold front is weakening and there's a chance of clearup. What does look clear is that from Sunday onwards and into next week clear conditions will be what we see most along with milder temperatures especially as we get into next week. Last weekend lots of people couldn't get to Yuzawa due to the disruption to trains and expressways. There should be none of those problems this weekend and so it will be back to a busy Saturday. The car parks will be filling up early! If we can get some more snow out of the clouds today, conditions should be really great too. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 21st February 2014, AM: Naeba: 280cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 315cm Gala Yuzawa: 380cm Iwappara: 245cm Yuzawa Kogen: 330cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Park: 250cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 21st February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 617cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 184cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It didn't really stop snowing for long yesterday, though this morning we have around 10cm or so of fresh snow outside. Resorts in town seem to be reporting around that number, with Kagura coming up with 15-20cm. It's still snowing as well at 9:30am, so not clearing up just yet here like in other neighbouring areas... perhaps later today, very probably by tomorrow. Good that we are getting the fresh snow in though as once this clears up it'll the skies that should be clear. Clear and sunny and gradually warming up as well. Tuesday onwards the forecast is looking decidedly 'too warm' and well clear above the zero point. That's next week though. For the moment it's very good conditions and should be a good weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It's not a very exciting one today and not the best way to end February... it's raining, even up at GALA Yuzawa and Kagura by all accounts. We are hoping that it will ease off this morning and leave us with just a cloudy day. The good thing is that it won't be quite as warm as it was the last few days, but there's still be a high of about +5 today in town. We might see some rain tomorrow as well, though hopefully it might be cold enough at higher elevations for it to be snowing. OK so I want to talk about snow! Nothing major on the weekly forecast and no major freeze either, though it seems there is a chance of snow showers now and again. All very borderline and weak though. Sorry I can't bring more exciting news. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 639cm Posted on Sunday 2nd March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . A splashing of snow overnight here, though just 1cm on the top of my car where it was parked in the Ishiuchi area just outside of Yuzawa. Resorts around town are reporting from a few cm to up to 5cm of snow overnight. Earlier on it was actually raining here but that was short-lived and it is just cloudy now. Hearing varied reports from people out on the slopes yesterday. Ranging from really poor snow conditions to not so bad higher up. Certainly far from great and very spring like conditions at the moment until we hopefully get a March topup. Will it happen? Tuesday aside when it's due to be sunny, there is snow forecast each day to the end of the week and so there are signs of hope. Snow on and off this morning and a few cm has fallen overnight, and currently it is around 0 degrees in town. Resorts are reporting up to 5cm of snow on the slopes. We are expecting to see the sun tomorrow and it will be a bit warmer, but after that it's looking like we can expect snow clouds to be with us through the rest of the week. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 703cm Posted on Friday 7th March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Conditions changing before our eyes here as there are some breaks in the snow clouds and blue sky starting to open up. The forecast for the day is continued snow so this might just be temporary but the mountains are looking fantastic this morning. Why? All that fresh new snow! Yes, really great news this morning as we had snow falling for most of yesterday and overnight. Get this, Kagura report 50cm of fresh. Naeba says 20-30cm. Maiko Snow Resort is also reporting a whopping 50cm! GALA Yuzawa have added 50cm this morning to their official snow depth. It would be great if more resorts gave up the daily 'new snowfall' information rather than just (sometimes) adjust the snow depth - Kagura, for example, have been unchanged on 330cm for quite a long time now - but... There isn't quite as much as 50cm on the top of my car but still a decent delivery. How things can change in just a few days. Obviously I haven't been out on the snow yet but I am guessing it will be fantastic conditions this morning. So, current blue sky above parts of Yuzawa aside, snow is forecast for the day and tomorrow too. Not much wind this morning and all resorts look set to open as normal. It should be an excellent weekend. There is a chance of stronger winds in higher places, so I advise if you plan to go to Kagura to check their website early morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Friday 21st November 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Open kettei! Yes, the decision has been made and Kagura is going to open from tomorrow morning. Hurray! Here's the lowdown: The Mitsumtata Ropeway will be open from 8am tomorrow morning. From the top of the Gondola a shuttle bus will take folk over to the base of the Kagura Gondola, and that Gondola will take you up to the main Kagura area where the Kagura Number 1 quad will be operating every day and the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift will be moving on Saturdays and holidays. So that's the lift situation. What about the courses? They plan to have the main Kagura run open - 1500m of it which - will 20-50m in width. And they are noting 60cm in snow depth. So a fairly decent start and with the natural snow up there and the 'snow' that the machines have been making it looks like decent cover up there. Remember there's some tonjiru and osjiruko soup on offer down at Mitsumata Ropeway from 1pm-4pm as well, though they are talking about limited supply so you have to decide what you want. Skiing and snowboarding or soup? ;) Perhaps both if you come back down before 4pm and there's still some left. The Ropeway plans to be open until 5pm, with the last 'going up' at 2:30pm. So that's the situation at Kagura. There won't be any new real snow up there as this morning the sun it out and it's a beautiful start to the morning. Clear skies all round, a bit of low lying early morning fog in places. Lovely. It's going to be a Yuzawatastically fine and sunny day by the looks of things, and warming up too with a high temperature of maybe 12-13 degreees forecast. Similarly warm and maybe similarly sunny tomorrow as well for that first day at Kagura. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 26th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 532cm Posted on Friday 26th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Snow for most of the day yesterday along with a moderate wind, though it didn't actually end up with the amount of snow that you'd think. It was really blowing around in the evening though, and the snow obviously set in good and proper overnight with a nice thick layer to report this morning. The on-top-of-the-car number is 35-40cm. Maiko Snow Resort report over 40cm. Kagura report 50cm. Naeba report 30-50cm. Looking good! Top conditions this morning wherever you go in the area, I'd say. But... Quite strong winds are messing with operations at Kagura early in the morning though - the Tashiro area will be closed for the day and from the Mitsumata Station it's open up to the Kagura Number 1 Romance pair lift (possibly that the quad will open later depending on conditions). Looks like the wind is affecting top areas of Naeba as well today. A quick look round other resorts and they all seem to be planning to be open as normal. It's snowing still this morning though a bit on and off over the last hour or so. Snow is forecast to be with us for the day today though so any breaks are probably just temporary. It should ease off by tomorrow morning though and we will probably get some sunny conditions over the weekend, especially on Sunday according to the local forecast. There's some impressive walls of snow around town and on Route 17. The tallest I have seen are around the traffic lights near the base areas of Ishiuchi Maruyama. Tomorrow sees the opening of the remaining two ski hills in the area.... Ishiuchi Hanaoka and the famous Mt Granview! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 250cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 240cm Iwappara: 190cm Joetsu Kokusai: 170cm Kagura: 250cm Kandatsu Kogen: 200cm Maiko Snow Resort: 240cm Naeba: 170cm NASPA Ski Garden: 190cm Yuzawa Kogen: 210cm (Kogen) 160cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 150cm --- Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date): All resorts not noted here are now at least part open. Ishiuchi Maruyama: Every day until 21st March (until 8:50pm) Iwappara: Every day until 22nd March (until 8pm on weekdays and Sundays, 9pm on Saturdays) Joetsu Kokusai: Every day until 22nd March (until 9pm) Kandatsu Kogen: From 23rd January, 'all night' on holidays (6pm or 10pm until 4am the next morning) Maiko Snow Resort: Every day until 14th March (until 8pm) Naeba: Every day until 29th March (until 9pm) NASPA Ski Garden (skiers only): 27th December until 3rd January; 11th January; Saturdays until 29th February (until 7pm) Yuzawa Nakazato: 27th December until 3rd January; 11th January; Saturdays from 10th January until 14th March (until 8:30pm) Chateaux Shiozawa also have nighta but only on certain days - no fixed schedule available at the moment).
