We were expecting sun this morning but to start the day off there's lots of cloud, it's rather dull and actually poor visibility up on the mountains by the looks of the webcams. Forecasts still say it's sun for the day, so perhaps it will clear up this morning. High temps or around 10C expected. Mixed forecasts for tomorrow as well with some telling us to expect some rain, others not. They agree that it will probably be warmer tomorrow though. No sakura to report yet! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 169cm Posted on Thursday 18th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After the frankly mad conditions yesterday with heavy snowfall and strong winds playing havoc, it's some more of the same this morning. 20+cm of lovely fresh light snow on the ground outside my place. Most snow prize for the day goes to Cortina with them reporting 60cm of fresh on lower slopes and a whopping 80cm on upper slopes. Sadly it's not fully open today again due to the conditions and avalanche danger. When it gets to open though... oh yes. Tsugaike Kogen are more coy with actual new snowfall numbers but their snow depth for the upper slopes seems to have increased by 80cm since yesterday and smashes through to over 3m. So I think there's a fair bit of new over there too. Tsugaike is also only limited open this morning with just the lower part of the Gondola moving. Happo just seems to have the Gondola, Panorama and Kokusai 3 lifts moving early on. More of Goryu/47 is open. Anyway details as I have been able to find have been updated in the bits below. Local services have been somewhat struggling to cope with the extreme conditions and transportation has been affected, though perhaps we are lucky that there aren't that many people around just yet. Once the storm clears I'm sure things will calm down and we'll all be able to relax more and just enjoy the snow. When will things calm down? Probably by the end of today or early tomorrow morning. Sun and clearer skies is forecast for tomorrow which should make it a fanstastic day to be on the mountain. The increased visibility will of course help but do remember the inherent dangers that can come with all that fresh snow while enjoying it. --- Information from around the resorts - at the time of writing Happo-one Reporting 30+cm of fresh snow this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's a slight bit of sun out at the moment over parts of the valley as I start writing this report, but that's definitely not the story of the last 24 hours. Loads of snow! Happo-one reporting 60cm. Cortina reporting 50cm. Less so than it has been and as I said a bit of sunlight down by the village though the mountains are still covered with cloud and getting snowed on. Snowfall is forecast for the day today and through into tomorrow morning, but it should clear up tomorrow. Bit of a rest on Tuesday maybe before another snow storm arrives by Wednesday which will bring with it more copious amounts of snow (hopefully). I have updated the information below. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 139cm Posted on Wednesday 17th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Sorry for the later report this morning, I have been digging myself out of snow and also trying to get as much information as I can for this report. Very large amounts of snow falling in Hakuba at the moment. Here's what the resorts are reporting in terms of fresh snowfall: Hakuba 47 - 30cm at base since last night, 60cm on upper slopes. Strong winds higher up. Hakuba Goryu - 30cm at Iimori, 30cm at Alps Daira upper slopes. Hakuba Happo-one - 60cm. Hakuba Cortina - 35cm at base; 40cm at top. Basically lots of snow, with more on the way as it is not stopping any time soon. Snow storm style conditions out there this morning, though some lifts are managing to be open. It's one of those days when conditions and status can change often, so what I post below is just the snapshot for early morning as I write the report and collect the info. If you are planning to be out in these mad conditions (!), I recommend you check with the resort. The Number 4 pair lift at Hakuba Cortina is closed this morning, due to avalanche danger according to the resort. It's highly recommended to stay on the official courses. All of this new snowfall, very poor visibility and wind blowing around... extra care is needed at times like this. It feels a bit of a downer talking about potential dangers, but we need to always keep those in mind while having our fun. It's not worth risking your life for. For those waiting for the end of the storm, Friday might bring us calmer conditions and some clearer skies and sun. --- Happo-one Reporting 60cm of fresh snow this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 109cm Posted on Tuesday 16th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Hakuba. It has started snowing (lightly) now but this is very probably the start of a lot that is due to fall over the next few days. Oh yes. In fact it quickly seems to be getting heavier just over the last 10 minutes. Bring it on, as they say. And so do I. So, heavy snow is expected today and tomorrow. It might get very windy too. And it will definitely be getting colder. All of the courses at the connecting Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 resorts are now open. I totally expect more of Happo-one to be open from the weekend but no confirmation of solid news on that just at the moment. With the snow due before the weekend, I would actually expect pretty much all areas of Hakuba to be open come the weekend. Yey. The Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field plans to open from Friday, with Hakuba Sanosaka joining in the fun from Saturday. --- Happo-one Reporting 10cm fresh snow at Usagidaira this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 241cm Posted on Friday 26th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The snow clouds remain over Hakuba this morning. It's a cold start to the day with light snow lazily falling from the skies as I sit here writing this report. A thin layer of snow at base with ski-jo generally reporting around 10cm of fresh on the slopes this morning. Hakuba Cortina coming up with the most goods and apparently 25cm on the upper areas over there. We are expecting milder weather patterns to move in by tomorrow and perhaps even the weekend will see sunny conditions in the region. Bring a camera! The 'Nighta' situation This information is mentioned in the area below for each of the resorts but I thought I would mention the options available for 'night skiing'. Great fun when the conditions are right - a bit like an ice-skating rink when they're not. Time it well though and it can be fantastic. Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba Cortina are open for floodlit nighta every day until 31st March. The night skiing at Happo-one will begin from tomorrow and then be open every day until the middle of March. Nighta at Kashiyamari is every day until 15th March (*sorry, I had that down as until 31st March in the report until today - my mistake). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 243cm Posted on Saturday 27th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. It looks like we're going to get some great views in today. Not much in terms of new snow to report this morning - and resorts report up to 10cm fresh - and it looks like we are going to be treated today with cloud early on already starting to clear up. Often get some amazing dramatic views when this happens. We are expecting fine, clear skies later today and tomorrow from the start of the day and maybe a day or two of slightly milder temperatures as well. Snow doesn't look like being too far away though with more due from Monday onwards. So make the most of the blue skies while you can. The Tree Riding Zone over at Hakuba 47 will be open from today. The resort describes it as 'a course for the adventurous, seeking a thrilling winter sports experience.' The area is ungroomed and unsupervised. You need to sign up and agree to the rules and also wear a fetching high visibility jacket to use the TRZ. Registration and all that stuff ovet at the school center at the resort. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 236cm Posted on Thursday 25th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Merry Christmas to all Hakuba Now and SnowJapan readers. It's a white Christmas here in Hakuba. Most new snowfall being reported by Hakuba Cortina resort who say there's been up to 40cm of fresh on the upper slopes over there. Goryu reporting 25cm, 47 reporting 30cm higher up and 10-15cm at base, Happo-one reporting 10cm. And my eyes report about 5-10cm or so on the ground in the village. It's not as fluffy and dry as it has been; a bit heavier and wet earlier on, but some good looking flakes coming down outside the window just now. Fresh snow is fresh snow, I'm sure it will be fine conditions out on the mountain this morning. Looks like it's really coming down out there now looking at the webcams from around the resorts - very poor visibility with nothing to see other than a sheet of grey/white. Snowfall is forecast on and off for the day today and tomorrow along with the continued cold conditions. Come Saturday the forecast is saying clearer skies and milder conditions through into at least early week.
