The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's one of those days where it looks like something is about to happen, but it's not doing anything just yet. We had some pretty good snow falling last night; wet, but some pretty good snowfall. By morning, though, it only was about 15cm in total (and still pretty heavy). Right now it's dark over Mt. Myoko and Mt. Kurohime just to the south; it seems like a lot of weather sort of sneaks in through the gap between the two mountains. The marker flags outside are also hanging absolutely limp - not a hint of wind. Snow is also on the forecast, but it's not here yet, either. The good news is that we didn't have any rain in the end yesterday, as gloomy as it seemed early in the day. Right now, we're just waiting for whatever happens next—hopefully a good snowfall and a reset on the hill. Offpiste there was still some good snow remaining on north faces, but that will need some help soon, too (and the temperatures are not as low as the resorts are reporting; it was 0° at the base of Akakan at 7:30 this morning—Ikenotaira and Myoko Snow Park win the honest reporting award for the day). The snow began falling at around 7:30 this morning, and it's coming down really, really good (OK, not great grammar, but it just sounds right). Looks like there could be a pretty good accumulation by tonight; only 10cm or so right now, but it's starting to build up. The reason for my wistfulness is that I'm actually in Niseko, where there's been some good snow, but nothing like the crazy snowfall we've had in Myoko this year - and nothing against Niseko, either! Our information for today is guaranteed fresh, too, with the Myoko team dutifully reporting on the actual conditions on the ground. Which are: go out and ski today! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow! There is a lot more snow here than there was yesterday. It's hard to tell how much is the real total lately, with a little bit of wind and great big snow walls to kind of confuse things, but at time of snowthrowing early today it was about 60cm. Nice, snow, too, after some heavier/wetter fall over the past few days. Other than that, things are just going smoothly along in Myoko, my hometown: the snow is falling steadily, the lifts are running smoothly; the mighty snowthrower, a regular part of these reports (and also a regular delayer of them) is just growling along; and all the lifts have been going like clockwork. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Good morning (just)! A late start today, without a snowthrower and armed with only a shovel to dig out the 30cm or so that came in from last night. How did people live in this part of the world before the coming of hydraulics and turbocharged diesel engines? Nice snowfall overnight; a little heavy, and some wind along with the snow. It's still coming down midday, with some winds perking up from time to time and building cornices on the snow walls. Should be some good, soft snow skiing today. The winds coming in off the coast are coming down a bit, and the atmospheric pressure is rising—and the forecast is for the possibility of brighter conditions tomorrow, warmer temperatures, and then more snow from late Thursday (rain is a possibility, but we won't mention that just yet). Today, too, the wind says be extra careful when traveling off the courses. It was on the news last night, but it bears repeating: if you're off the course in the trees, you might as well be five kilometers back in the mountains - you're not safer just because you're close to the resort. If you don't have the right gear (beacon, shovel, probe, water, food, some extra clothes, etc.), you really shouldn't be out there. "Your own responsibility" is only good until you're in trouble, as a wise local man said to me once—once you're hurt or lost or stuck out there, you'll be responsible in the end, but you'll be dependent on others in the meantime. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow! It's coming down hard again today, although with some pretty good winds and drifting. Looks like about 30cm so far (looking at the post-snowthrowing cuts into the snow), and it's coming down really nicely. Out on the coast, yesterday's southerly wind has switched around to a strong wind from the northwest—typical conditions for good snowfall. Take a little bit of care in the backcountry, with fresh building up on a bit of crust from the past few days. Not too much of a worry, particularly on north-facing slopes where things stayed pretty soft all the way along, but more so where the sun hit a bit on south-facing slopes. I hope to hear more from people up on the hill today as they dig around (and me, too, hopefully, a dinged knee and lots of snow clearing to do notwithstanding). Anyway, it's good to see winter really back after a few kind of gloomy, warm, non-descript days, and decreasing snowpack levels (not that that really is a worry in Myoko - what's a few centimeters when there's a base of more than 2.5 meters everywhere?)... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Only a few reports in from the resorts, but I wanted to get this out early. If you're thinking about going offpiste today, choose low-angle slopes in the trees! We have one person missing after going off above Akakan, and a big avalanche down the road in Arai with one person not accounted for - probe line is going on as this report goes out. All that wind - which got much stronger after my report, and which had gone on through the night before - has deposited some serious wind loading on the hills, and people were reporting slides coming down all over the place. On piste, you're going to have a great day. It's a little sunny, a little snowy, and the environment will be controlled. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Winter is back! Snow is back! Nothing like a good, fresh coat of the white stuff to restore the look of the town... the snow was getting a bit ratty looking there.... Not a huge accumulation so far - perhaps 15cm, with some blowing. Nice, fairly large flakes are falling right now, and what has fallen is pretty light. A little more, and we have the makings of some good powder (keep an eye up high on wind-loading, though; these cycles of warm/rain/sun followed by layers of wind-deposited snow are pretty scary). A good day to go back outside again; I know a lot of people (like the guys who recognized me this morning, and who went to Nagano for some city fun yesterday) did anything but ski. It happens, right? There's lots to do here, luckily, when the weather and hills don't cooperate. Funny on the temperatures today: my car, the best and most accurate source, said -5°C at the base of Akakan at 8am. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's another, ah, interesting day in Myoko. We started out with some fine snow (tiny round ice pellets, really), some fog high on the mountain and generally gray conditions. Now the sun is out and it's getting warmer - tomorrow the freezing line will go way up the mountain, with a possibility of rain (maybe even heavy) toward the evening. What the....?! Well, the strange weather we're talked about continues. The Coast guard into from the coast shows a southern, offshore wind in the area closest to us (possibly flowing down the mountains and across the Takada Plan to the coast?) with the winds calming and a rising barometer. I'm thinking about taking the safe course tomorrow, and going wakasagi (smelt) fishing in Lake Nojiri tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another cycle of weather is moving through Myoko today, after a rainy and generally gray Thursday. We've got wind, snow, poor visibility - all the things that seem to happen after a warm day or two. Actually, this January has been an odd one; usually this is the month where we don't see the sun very often; February has seen some rain and warm spells before going back to nice powder late in the month and into March. This has also meant more unstable conditions in the mountains than we'd normally expect, and with this wind, it will be a good idea to be extra careful if you head off of the resorts. Personally, I'm just happy that the monster snowthrower has returned from the shop, and the windows have been cleared away—no more living in a dark (although warm) cave. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful, almost perfect day in Myoko (even knowing our preference for heavy snowfalls and minimal visibility). The mountains were glowing yellow at sunrise and sparkling white now (and I would have told you this earlier if the main computer didn't decide to reject the keyboard...). It was pretty good and cold as well, which should keep that good snow from yesterday in good condition. The regional forecast is for more snow after noon, but it doesn't look too likely just yet. The wind has come down and the atmospheric pressure is still rising on the coast, so the nice weather might hold. It's still mostly sunny, although there is a high layer of thin clouds up there now. Could be a bit of calm before the storm; it's getting warmer, with the possibility of some rain later today and into tomorrow, changing to potentially heavy snow tomorrow.
