The rain didn't do us any favors yesterday in terms of melt and snow conditions... but quickly and happily moving on, snow is about to make another hopefully dramatic entrance. For those of you in Japan you might have seen on the news about the winter low pressure weather pattern that is about to hit Japan and bring with it lots of snow. We're probably going to get our fair share, and hopefully more - it's lining up to be a very snowy weekend. There's another wave of snow due mid week next week as well. So hopefully we will soon not need to be talking about which lifts and courses are open - because they'll soon all be open. That's the plan anyway. Weather this morning? It's 0 degrees, and there's a few cm of snow on the ground in places from overnight, but while it has been snowing very lightly it's just cloudy right now. Looks like really bad visibility on the mountains early on this morning. The snow I keep on going on about (see above) is due to start later on today, perhaps this evening, so I am crossing all fingers that we'll have something decent to report tomorrow morning. Hakuba Norikura Onsen, Kashimayari and Hakuba Cortina all planning on being part open from tomorrow. I'll try to bring details of that in my report tomorrow (sorry if that means it might be a bit later - so much to check!) -- Happo-one Part of upper areas open. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A cloudy day forecast today with snow at times, one of those times being now and it will be staying cold not straying too far above the zero mark. We're expecting clearer and warmer and sunny conditions again tomorrow. Later in the week though all eyes on that cold and snowy winter pattern that seems to be scheduled to arrive over Hakuba and also quite a few other areas on the Japan Sea side of Japan. Looks like it could bring with it quite a lot of snow. Would be good! Hakuba 47 reporting no fresh snowfall on the mountain overnight though there was some that came down during the day yesterday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . First of all, happy birthday to the Emperor of Japan - to celebrate we all get a holiday today! Snow still falling this morning mountain side, a bit clearer over by the roads on the other side of the valley. That's not the headline though... Loads of snow falling yesterday and large amounts of lovely fresh snow to report this morning. Here's what the resorts say this morning for the overnight haul: Hakuba Goryu: up to 50cm Hakuba 47: up to 40cm Hakuba Cortina: 30-40cm Hakuba Norikura: 30cm Hakuba Iwatake: 10-20cm Very nice. And the rest, I reckon. Just, lots. Enough for everyone that's for sure. Do I need to say that conditions should be excellent this morning? :) OK so yes snow clouds hanging on this morning but we are expecting them to clear up somewhat today and move on. Just how much it clears up remains to be seen of course but we could be on for some dramatic views later in the day. Expecting milder weather tomorrow maybe just cloud, maybe clearer, and then back to snow falling into Christmas Day. Lots of people arriving in Hakuba now for their Christmas break. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Fresh snow to report this morning from Hakuba. Around 5cm on the ground here by my place in the village but resorts around the valley reporting around 10cm at base and up to 30cm on upper slopes overnight. It's coming down very nicely at the moment as well, so the cm should be building up quite quickly once again if this continues. Visibility generally poor.. it's the price we must pay for heavy snow. Those who brave the conditions this morning will be rewarded with some fine fresh snow conditions. Those who wait until tomorrow - looks like they'll be able to enjoy the fresh conditions with clearer skies above Hakuba....decent chance of sun making an appearance tomorrow and it'll be slightly warmer as well. Do keep an eye on the data below as I do go through them all and update each morning... wouldn't want you to miss those updates! Takes time to get it all together each day. Don't like using the word wet, but we have just a thin bit of wet snow on the ground this morning in places - though it's better than just rain I suppose. Did look like it was trying to snow last night but obviously didn't turn into much in the end. Lots of 'gas' and cloud around this morning, but some blue sky as well. Bit of sun as well and mild conditions. We're forecast snow though and expecting potentially decent amounts of fresh snowfall over today and tomorrow. That would be good. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snow falling and generally poor visibility out on the mountains yesterday, though not a huge amount in terms of cm. Heavy snow falling at the moment in Hakuba - it's really coming down with purpose! That's what we like to see. :) Just a few cm on the ground in the village overnight but if it carries on falling like this it will soon be piling up. Resorts around the valley generally reporting around 5cm of snow, bit more bit less depending - check the numbers that are available below. It's not actually that cold this morning with the thermometer outside telling me that it's currently +1C. Not much of a wind either. Just snow coming down. Poor visibility out on the slopes with all this snow falling this morning and foggy conditions. Expecting slightly milder conditions tomorrow with clearer skies during the day, with a return to snow in the evening. Going to get quite a bit colder as well as we go into 2015 and the year should start off with a heavy snow in the region. A number of 'Countdown' events planned for tomorrow night, as well as some healthy nightlife activities around the village I'm sure! We were expecting sun this morning but to start the day off there's lots of cloud, it's rather dull and actually poor visibility up on the mountains by the looks of the webcams. Forecasts still say it's sun for the day, so perhaps it will clear up this morning. High temps or around 10C expected. Mixed forecasts for tomorrow as well with some telling us to expect some rain, others not. They agree that it will probably be warmer tomorrow though. No sakura to report yet! Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. Top area open, Champion Expert closed, Toomi used to get back to base though very narrow! Iimori area closed. Upper - 165cm Toomi - 30cm Hakuba 47: Plans to be open until early May. Almost all of Hakuba 47 remains open. Upper - 140cm Lower - 30cm Happo-one: Plans to be open until early May. After the frankly mad conditions yesterday with heavy snowfall and strong winds playing havoc, it's some more of the same this morning. 20+cm of lovely fresh light snow on the ground outside my place. Most snow prize for the day goes to Cortina with them reporting 60cm of fresh on lower slopes and a whopping 80cm on upper slopes. Sadly it's not fully open today again due to the conditions and avalanche danger. When it gets to open though... oh yes. Tsugaike Kogen are more coy with actual new snowfall numbers but their snow depth for the upper slopes seems to have increased by 80cm since yesterday and smashes through to over 3m. So I think there's a fair bit of new over there too. Tsugaike is also only limited open this morning with just the lower part of the Gondola moving. Happo just seems to have the Gondola, Panorama and Kokusai 3 lifts moving early on. More of Goryu/47 is open. Anyway details as I have been able to find have been updated in the bits below. Local services have been somewhat struggling to cope with the extreme conditions and transportation has been affected, though perhaps we are lucky that there aren't that many people around just yet. Once the storm clears I'm sure things will calm down and we'll all be able to relax more and just enjoy the snow. When will things calm down? Probably by the end of today or early tomorrow morning. Sun and clearer skies is forecast for tomorrow which should make it a fanstastic day to be on the mountain. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's a slight bit of sun out at the moment over parts of the valley as I start writing this report, but that's definitely not the story of the last 24 hours. Loads of snow! Happo-one reporting 60cm. Cortina reporting 50cm. Hakuba 47 reported 30cm of fresh snowfall up by Line C during the day yesterday, and I can confirm there was that much to move off the top of the car at the end of the day. And the rest. Goryu is this morning reporting 40cm on the upper slopes and 20cm at the lower Iimori area. 15cm more snow overnight, and it is still snowing now. Less so than it has been and as I said a bit of sunlight down by the village though the mountains are still covered with cloud and getting snowed on. Snowfall is forecast for the day today and through into tomorrow morning, but it should clear up tomorrow. Bit of a rest on Tuesday maybe before another snow storm arrives by Wednesday which will bring with it more copious amounts of snow (hopefully). I have updated the information below. Happily it will not be long now before they are all just 'open'. :) Have fun if you can make it out. Get wrapped up well and take care. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Sorry for the later report this morning, I have been digging myself out of snow and also trying to get as much information as I can for this report. Very large amounts of snow falling in Hakuba at the moment. Here's what the resorts are reporting in terms of fresh snowfall: Hakuba 47 - 30cm at base since last night, 60cm on upper slopes. Strong winds higher up. Hakuba Goryu - 30cm at Iimori, 30cm at Alps Daira upper slopes. Hakuba Happo-one - 60cm. Hakuba Cortina - 35cm at base; 40cm at top. Basically lots of snow, with more on the way as it is not stopping any time soon. Snow storm style conditions out there this morning, though some lifts are managing to be open. It's one of those days when conditions and status can change often, so what I post below is just the snapshot for early morning as I write the report and collect the info. If you are planning to be out in these mad conditions (!), I recommend you check with the resort. The Number 4 pair lift at Hakuba Cortina is closed this morning, due to avalanche danger according to the resort. It's highly recommended to stay on the official courses. All of this new snowfall, very poor visibility and wind blowing around... extra care is needed at times like this. It feels a bit of a downer talking about potential dangers, but we need to always keep those in mind while having our fun. It's not worth risking your life for. For those waiting for the end of the storm, Friday might bring us calmer conditions and some clearer skies and sun. --- Happo-one Reporting 60cm of fresh snow this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snowing during the day yesterday, though a level down from the heavy snow of the previous day. Not as much snow as some areas not too far away from us here in Hakuba this morning. 5cm new I'd say in the village this morning, with resorts reporting 5-15cm of fresh on the slopes. Nice regular topups, would be nice to have it deeper on the lower slopes but we're getting there. Gradually more is opening as well. Riesen at Happo-one opened yesterday for the first time this season allowing you to now ski down to base. Hakuba Goryu is also now almost fully open. Snow is falling this morning though the forecast is for it to not last much beyond lunchtime, but start up again later tomorrow. Might not be as cold tomorrow but come Wednesday we're expecting heavy snow and potentially strong winds. --- Happo-one The Riesen Slalom course opened around lunchtime yesterday - now able to ski down to the Gondola base station. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a lovely morning in Hakuba. 15-20cm or so on the ground here since yesterday. More on the mountains. Blue skies. Calm conditions after the storm. Cold though, brrr. What more could we want. More of Happo opening now with more lifts operating and runs open. Could this weekend by the first weekend that sees resorts pretty much all fully open? I think it might! Expect quite a few people to turn up to enjoy it all as well. As well they should. Cloud with snow returning in the evening is what the forecasts have for us. I can't think of much else to say this very fine morning.
