  • Shiga Kogen Now: Sunday 24th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 459cm Weather overview Cloud, snow Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Sunday 24th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Pretty wild conditions here this morning with snow coming down and strong winds. The strong winds mean that it's limited operations out there. At the time of writing the following areas are closed: Higashitateyama Mammoth Nishitateyama upper area Ichinose Family Terakoya It doesn't seem quite as wild now compared with a little earlier and so I think we can expect some of those to open once they sort out the snow and/or if the winds ease off. Other resort areas have limited lifts running. I think some people might be taking the trip to the Monkeys down below or taking a leisurely onsen this morning with the conditions as they are. For a Sunday I expect it to be quiet out there. For those that do venture out, fresh untouched powder awaits. Take care. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . A cloudy morning and less wind after that somewhat stormy weekend. We have had over 50cm of new snow over the last few days and with the wind there are places where there's more than that piled up. Fantastic snow quality though and a great way to approach the end of February. Actually I said a cloudy morning but I'm getting to see more blue sky as well now and the sun is out at the moment. Looking ahead, we are due a run of clearer and brighter days along with milder temperatures though fingers crossed it remains suitably cold keeping the snow in top condition. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Fresh snowfall in Shiga Kogen overnight. Not a huge amount but enough to cover the roads - though it's quickly drying up now - so perhaps a few cm or so on the mountains maybe a bit more. But great to see a return to more winter like weather even if for a short time. It was still snowing an hour or so ago here, but has quickly cleared up this morning and there's an increasing amount of blue sky now - the sun is out. It still feels crisp and chilly though, so hopefully it won't warm up too much today. Tomorrow is forecast to be sunny and warmer. Instead of starting the day with temps at +9C, this morning it's -9C. Feels like winter again! :) Bit of a wind blowing about but visibility fairly decent for the most part considering it's snow. The roads have dried up already this morning but it was snowing earlier on and there has been a dusting in lower areas and some resorts are reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow on the slopes. Not bad. That report coming from Yakebitaiyama by the way. So a bit of a freshen up and good to see some snow on the trees. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Ah, Golden Week. Always seems to sign off the season (apart from the Yokoteyama area) and mark the beginning of spring proper in Shiga Kogen. And it always seems to be the time when temperatures start to rise and it get rather warm. They're keeping fairly chilly this year though so far - I almost feel that March was warmer than April generally this year. The road connecting Shiga Kogen with Kusatsu in Gunma actually had to be closed due to the snow and icy conditions that we got on Friday. Yes, snowfall! Not a huge amount but there was a fresh coating there. This morning it is dry conditions and a mix of cloud and sun. A pleasant morning. Tomorrow should be a bit warmer and it will be busier than a normal Monday with it being a national holiday in Japan. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are 'normal' weekdays (though some people will either be lucky enough to have them as holidays or take them as holidays), followed by the second part of the Golden Week holidays from Friday until Monday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . That storm we were expecting might have been delayed, but we sure got what we wanted out of it yesterday and overnight. With 60cm of new snowfall at Yamabiko, and a good 20cm lower down the mountain, I think it was a good day. The snow didn't actually really start happening until the afternoon, but it really set in quite quickly. It is continuing to snow this morning and we will probably see conditions continue like this all day today and into tomorrow as well. Quite heavy snowfall due tonight. It goes without saying of course that this is all great for the mountain, and while we are not seeing more open up this morning it shouldn't be long before we see more runs and lifts opening up. • Nozawa Now: Friday 7th December 2012

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 16cm Weather overview Fine Wind Slight Temperature - Visibility Very good Posted on Friday 7th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . No new snow to report this morning and actually the sun is out and doing it's shining thing and we have quite a lot of blue sky to enjoy. It's a cold one as well with a temperature of -11C up at Yamabiko as of 8am. Temperatures in the village are hovering around 0C. Two bits of good news for the weekend. The confirmed one is that from tomorrow, more of Nozawa Onsen plans to be open with the Uenotaira run opening up and presumably the quad lift servicing it. The other bit of 'news' is what we are hoping will be news.... heavy snow. We might see some snow falling by the end of today but tommorrow and Sunday are still set to bring us decent snowfall as well as potentially strong winds. The snow should continue into next week. Fingers crossed everyone!
