The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Eyes were almost glued to the windows this morning at breakfast time, because we have an absolutely stunning day today in Nozawa Onsen. A crystal clear blue sky, white heavily snow frosted trees and perfect fresh snow, what more could you want? 15cm of fresh snow reported over the resort since yesterday. The groomed runs are silky smooth corduroy and very fast with cold overnight temperatures. It will be a challenge to find a single patch of ice in the mountain today so the quality of riding will be very high. Through the trees will also deliver some of the best turns of your life with dry knee deep powder. Can you tell I'm excited. Winds are light and crowd levels are low. Yesterday continued on the recent form of day after day excellent skiing and boarding. We saw deep windblown stashes of powder and the temperatures were very cold. Light snow showers persisted most of the day and the sun even made a brief appearance during the afternoon. Late February this year is really turning it on. Looking at what's in store for the next couple of days we should see some warmer possibly almost spring skiing conditions for around three days before the freezing level takes a dive back down to around sea level once again on Friday night. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . What a crazy day it was yesterday in Nozawa. We had very strong winds shut the entire top half of the mountain almost all day. Combined with the weekend crowds it was a little hectic in the lift lines. We saw heavy snow continue all day - a true blizzard. 15-20cm of snow reported since 3pm yesterday afternoon, but there was more before then and so I have adjusted the numbers shown. Amongst the trees the riding was brilliant with deep windblown powder. Cruising down the groomed runs was not too dissimilar to the Antarctic with horizontal blowing snow. A day to get out there and experience the conditions just for the fun of it. Today the storm has subsided and we have some blue skies and sun making a return. We still have the occasional light snow shower passing through. The top of the mountain will be all time considering the closure of top lifts yesterday; two days of fresh powder awaits the early birds. Looking at the forecast we should see mostly blue sky today before completely clearing tomorrow. Tomorrow should be beautiful in fact with cool temperatures, light winds and bluebird skies. Wednesday should see spring conditions with the freezing level rising to around 1200m and mostly clear weather. The first day of spring we will see a return to winter conditions with moderate snow and very cold temperatures predicted. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The base has cracked the four meter mark in style overnight here in Nozawa Onsen with 30cm of fresh powder falling since last lifts yesterday. Early birds and weekend warriors were out in force this morning lapping the trees and ungroomed pistes with gigantic smiles on their faces; conditions are obviously very good. We even have sun breaking through the clouds with excellent visibility and light winds. Do yourself a favor and get up there if you can! Yesterday was yet another great day. We saw sun and very light crowds persist all day long. It was a great day for exploring the shaded gullies with very inviting visibility and a relatively stable snowpack. The best places for skiing in the afternoon were the north facing slopes as the southern faces were exposed to the strong late winter sun, dramatically altering the snowpack. It looks like we should expect further snow showers to pass across the region later today and tonight, probably produce more fresh tracks tomorrow morning. We should see some strong winds and moderate snows last the day on Sunday. Hopefully the winds will not be too strong to shut lifts because if not the riding will be excellent. On Monday light snow showers should continue till around the afternoon before a clearing trend commences. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's the first official day of spring and the temperatures have almost spiked from this warm spell with a freezing level sitting at about 2000m. Luckily the forecast rain has held off - for the time being anyway. Conditions out there are very spring-like with firm and fast pistes early, softening during the day. Crowd levels are very low and most areas feel like you are at your own private resort. Unfortunately strong winds about the peaks have forced temporary closure of higher lifts and the Nagasaka gondola. Let’s hope the winds back off soon. Like yesterday, the best riding will be had on the groomed runs. The park and pipe are in fine form and well worth checking out. Yesterday was a surprisingly good day on the slopes. The Yamabiko pistes held excellent quality right up through the afternoon. The lower groomers became slushy later in the day, but the skiing was still fun and forgiving. Bright blue sunshine made for some beautiful photo opportunities near the summit. Looking at the weather forecast we expect moderate snow to begin sometime tonight with about 10-20cm expected. We should see snow and very cold temperatures continue on Saturday. The winds will be strong so remember an extra layer of clothing. Sunday should see the occasional light snow showers pass through interspersed with cold partly cloudy weather. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Last day of winter (officially!) and it's another warm spring-like day here in Nozawa Onsen. We have some partly cloudy conditions and the forecast suggests a full bluebird later this afternoon so at least the visibility will make up for the warmth and conditions. Riding should be fun with the groomers being the pick. Runs will be slushy at lower elevations even this morning with mild overnight temperatures. Towards the peak we expect firm and fast conditions this morning, softening during the afternoon. An excellent day for practicing in the park and pipe with soft, forgiving landings. Yesterday saw warm spring conditions and it was slushy even at the summit of the resort. Conditions remained clear for the morning but during the afternoon clouds and mist rolled over the top half of the resort; so the best riding was had early. Looking at the weather for the next few days we expect that tomorrow will be even warmer than today with around +7C predicted for mid level elevations. Unfortunately we expect some rain right up to the summit as well. On Friday night the freezing level should make a dramatic drop as a cold front moves over the region. We expect strong winds and moderate snow on Saturday with cold temperatures and snow showers continuing for at least a couple of days following. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It looks like we have some fresh powder falling in Nozawa Onsen this morning. With a rapid drop in the freezing level overnight the rain has turned to snow delivering 15cm reported at Uenotaira, with other areas of the report reporting a fresh 5cm. We have strong winds about the peak so higher lifts may again be on wind hold. With the rapid freeze and fresh snow, slope stability is very low. Beware of the very high avalanche risk when venturing off piste. Yesterday was not the best day on the mountain. Conditions were ok in the morning with firm and fast pistes early that quickly softened. Very strong prefrontal winds kept most of the top half on wind hold all day. During the afternoon the rainfall commenced and built in intensity after last lifts, becoming heavy. Luckily the solid base has probably resisted major damage. With the worst of the weather behind us we can look at the forecast ahead without cringing. Nozawa Onsen is set to experience further light to moderate snow showers today and into tomorrow. Cold temperatures should accompany this snow until at least Tuesday. Monday should see a mostly sunny bluebird conditions. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Anyone out there enjoy yesterday? Poor visibility but with snow continuing to come down there were some very very fine snow conditions out there. Oh yes. It was Australia Day yesterday and as there are one or two friends from Australia in Hakuba at the moment there were a few lively gatherings last night. Maybe a few sore heads this morning, as well as sore limbs from efforts on the slopes during the daytime! Visibility is better this morning as things have calmed down somewhat and it was clearer but clouds have been gradually moving in covering parts of the mountains as well. Right now it looks like variable visibility depending on where you are and generally less as you get higher up. Here's what the resorts are reporting in terms of snowfall since yesterday: Hakuba Goryu - 15-30cm Hakuba 47 - 20cm Hakuba Cortina - 35-45cm 15+cm here in village. The snow has eased off this morning. It is a cold -6C with a brisk wind here in the village area but it looks like resorts are open as normal this morning. Up at Usagidaira on Happo it is -9C, average northerly wind speed of 3.6m/s and a maximum of 6.4m/s. We may see scattered snow showers but the local forecast for the day is generally just cloudy and similar for tomorrow. After that, a run of a few days of clearer weather is likely. Should be another great day out on the slopes today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . 1st February 2013. I can hardly believe it is already February. The time seems to go so fast in winter and while resort skiing and boarding goes on until May in Hakuba, the thought of being in peak season is just mad. We might be in 'peak season' now, but the current snow conditions aren't quite up there living up to that name. For the moment anyway without the fresh these last few days. A beautiful day yesterday and a beautiful day today as well. No new snowfall to report from around the resorts. This morning we had clear blue skies once again. Since late morning thin clouds have been forming, taking away most of the blue contrast giving us a more overcast feel to the afternoon. The sun is still shining through this new layer. Right now it is approaching +9C at village level. Warm! It's closing in on +5C even up at Usagidaira on Happo-one, so it's feeling warm out on the mountain today as well. Tomorrow... well, tomorrow is it going to rain. It's going to be as warm as today but there seems almost no chance of us avoiding the rain I'm afraid to say. It might even start as late as this evening. We're hoping it might get to be snow higher up, especially as we approach tomorrow evening, but it's going to be 'girigiri' borderline at best. Sunday would seem to be the pick of the weekend though for those visiting. It is recommended that people stay out of the backcountry at the moment especially with the probable rain and snow at elevation adding load to the already somewhat unstable snowpack. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba, and welcome to a new week. If you count Monday as the start of the week, of course. And a fine morning it seems it will be. Lots of white cloud around the mountains, but lots of blue sky up there as well and the sun shining down casting lots of shadows all around. Very dramatic. No new snow to report here at village level, and resorts not reporting anything other than a sprinkling up at Cortina. Temperatures dropped down to -10 degrees overnight and as of 9am it was still around -5 degrees. Hakuba 47 are reporting a temperature of -12C up top this morning, so it's a cold start to the day. Just a slight northerly wind. After all that snow we got a few days back, it seems that this week we are going to be enjoying clearer skies with just the chance of an occasional snow shower from time to time. Temperatures set to rise as the week goes on with Friday looking almost warm there on the forecast and bringing a chance of rain into Saturday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well todays report isn't going to be too difficult! No new snow to report. The sun is out. Blue skies all around. It's a stunning morning in Hakuba. A cold start to the day, it was -7 degrees when I got up and now 'warmed up' somewhat to around -5. A high of around +4 in the village is likely today. The forecast tells us to expect simular tomorrow but perhaps even warmer, and then still rain likely on Saturday. With freezing level forecast to be above 2000m, it's going to be touch and go if it might be raining right up to the top of the ski resorts as well. We can only hope that will not happen and wait to see. It does seem we are in for a run of milder conditions through into at least early in the week. Should be good groomers early this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba and it's snowy news I bring this morning. Around 20cm or so of snow at village/base level this morning with resorts around Hakuba and Otari reporting up to 30cm on the slopes. Hearing reports of up to 40cm. Conditions on slopes should be excellent this morning. It's actually a relatively mild morning here with the temperature around 0 degrees at base at the moment. Usagidaira at 1400m is reporting a temperature of -7 degrees and a NW wind of about 3.5m/s. The wind has been affecting lifts early on. Seems some lifts on 47 affected. Over at Cortina the Number 4 and 5 lifts are closed today due to avalanche danger along with some of the popular courses over there. Snow is still falling on the mountain though lower down in the village there's even a few small areas of blue sky from time to time, though still mostly cloud cover. The forecast is for snow for most of the day in the region, followed by likely clearer conditions tomorrow morning. [I want to believe the '250cm' of new snow reported by Hakuba Goryu on upper slopes this morning, but I reckon it's more like 25cm. Having said that, 250cm of snow overnight is a scary prospect, if not somewhat exciting. Can you just imagine that. We have been known to post typos from time to time - I remember once Hakuba 47 was on 4700cm snow depth once a few years back acccoring to our report. We fixed that up of course as soon as about 20 people mailed us to let us know!] Back to serious hat... So lots of new snow and enough great conditions on the courses of the resorts to enjoy. With heightened avalanche riskes out of bounds it is highly recommended that people stay within the boundaries. Going outside is just asking for trouble. Nobody wants to hear about people being buried or injured on the slopes... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . No new snow being reported around the valley this morning. The windy and snowy conditions of yesterday are not with us this morning and all is calm once again in Hakuba. Visibility remained generally poor yesterday on the mountains though late afternoon some areas were treated with a short period of sunshine through the clouds. Very dramatic it was up on Happo, where I was enjoying the snow. It is an overcast cloudy start to the day here this morning but visibility is good and we can see the mountain range backdrop to the village. It's just all grey, or is that silver? Silver sounds more cool. The forecast is telling me that we might see some sun later on. Doesn't seem likely as things are now, but as we all know conditions can quickly change in these here mountains. Light snow possible overnight and then snow again Friday night, so looks like we are going to get a topup of conditions once again just before the weekend. It's a fairly mild feeling morning and actually we are into the positive numbers at the moment - just.
