It's actually a really nice, sunny day, and there are still some lifts rolling out there, and a pretty good snow base to slide on. • Myoko Now: Wednesday 8th May 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1370m Weather overview Fine Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Very good Posted at 3:30pm on Wednesday 8th May 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's still cold up here in Myoko, even though the last day of the lifts has come with the end of the Golden Week holiday. It's been an interesting season: we didn't have the massive snowfalls of the past couple of years, but that didn't mean it wasn't very good, especially in January and February. March was an odd month this season, with lots of bad weather to kind of put a damper on things. Funny, since during the last several years we've seen some rain during February, then a return of powder during March. You just never know.... The cold weather and recent snow - remember, it was snowing high up at the beginning of May - means we may have a great spring/early summer season up high in the hills. Tours to the huts below Mt. Hiuchi and closer to Mt. Myoko are now in full swing, and we've at least got some sun recently. Nice if it would just get warm! Ah, corn snow. Looks like a busy year to come, with many of the hotels already booking reservations. There's definitely a bigger international presence, but luckily most visitors are here because of what Myoko already is: a nice, Japanese, compact, friendly little ski town. Hope we can keep that spirit alive. Thanks for reading the reports this season - hope you enjoyed them. We'll be back in the autumn when the 2013/2014 season is just around the corner. Myoko Now 2012-2013 season Data at the end of the season Total snowfall at base so far 1370cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 67 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 73cm (10th January) November 2012 snowfall 17cm reported on 3 days December 2012 snowfall 334cm reported on 12 days January 2013 snowfall 508cm reported on 21 days February 2013 snowfall 424cm reported on 20 days March 2013 snowfall 76cm reported on 9 days April 2013 snowfall 11cm reported on 2 days Previous report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Myoko. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . The other day we had more snowfall and there is about 20-30cm or so on the runs of Madarao Kogen. Good to be walking on snow once again. A bit of resort news for you. This season Madarao will be opening up two new courses. 'Powder Theater' is a 600m tree run course connecting the Powerline and Crystal courses. Looks like you'll be able to see it easily and plan your lines from the No13 single lift. The other new 380m run is called 'Adventure Aisle' up at the top of the mountain. They are not actually referring to it as a course it seems, it's more like a connecting run making it easier to get onto get onto Powderline. Should be great views up there though. Can't wait to give them a go! It's snowing this morning so lets hope we get enough for the 'pre-open' next weekend. Full official opening planned for 15th December. Well, lift actually as they plan to have the Number 1 lift moving and describing the conditions as 'girigiri' which basically means borderline. It will be good to have the first run of the season, but don't expect deep powder just as yet! It is a beautiful morning here in the region with mostly clear blue skies all around. Snow is due to be falling by the end of the day though and we are expecting heavy snowfall over the weekend along with strong winds. This is a special 'pre-open' event and lift tickets will be 500 yen tomorrow (Saturday) and 1100 yen on Sunday. The resort then plans to open properly from next weekend. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . The season starts proper tomorrow! After last weekend we have seen more snow early on in the week and finer conditions in the last few - the sun has been out today - but from tomorrow Madarao Kogen opens for the season. And here's the plans. Conditions may dictate change but the plan is for the Number 1 lift and the Number 2 Quad lift to be operating tomorrow with 6 courses open. There's about 70cm of snow on the mountain at the moment and it's not going to get more by tomorrow, so that's what they'll open with. Tomorrow will probably be more cloudy and tonight into tomorrow there is a chance of rain even along with mild conditions, so we are hoping to avoid any of that. After that, the next snowfall looks likely Tuesday into Wednesday. From today, reports will be posted daily. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Greetings to everyone from Madarao. Today is the first day for the 2012/13 season and there is plenty of early season snow. In hindsight the resort probably would have been able to open last Tuesday as there was powder galore. Today it is much warmer with a strong wind blowing, and a light rain falling early on so really not the best of conditions. But there is enough snow to burn a few runs and get those summer legs back in shape. In Madarao we have two lifts open today. Ticket prices are cheap though... only 2500 yen for all the runs you can eat! The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . The Number 1 lift was moving for the first time this season yesterday and more of the same today, with 10+cm of fresh snow to report as well. The crazy snow and wind blizzard like storm we were expecting this weekend somehow hasn't happened - not yet anyway - and the wind has been relatively calm. Makes for a more comfortable day out though and it was good to get the first turns of the season in. Madarao Kogen officially opens properly for the season on Saturday, so will be closed again from tomorrow until Friday. Hopefully by the time Saturday comes around we will have a decent base to play with.
