At the moment we have pretty consistent snow that is settling nicely. The conditions out on the slopes are pretty damn good. The pistes are in great shape and there is a good amount of fluffy powder to be found out and about on the mountain. Get out there and enjoy it. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday the morning in particular was a real cracker! Beautiful blue skies and sunshine and all our lovely snow. By around noon there was quite a bit of thin cloud appearing and giving proceedings a bright and part overcast feel. And by mid afternoon it was mostly cloudy. And by late night it was snowing... result of which this morning is about 5cm on the ground in village areas and resorts reporting between that amount and up to 15cm at higher elevations. So there'll be a decent fresh layer up there this morning. Worth investigating. Visibility is way down this morning as snow continues falling. Looks foggy and not much to see at all on the upper webcams. Be sure you know where you're going! The forecast say there may even be some sunshine poking through later on, so things do seem due to get clearer. The forecast is looking good with a fair amount of snow on the 6 day forecast now - heaviest currently due tomorrow night into Saturday. Nice. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After that fine day yesterday, it's back to snow this morning. Not the kind that adds up to new numbers and it's probably going to stop and maybe even clear this afternoon. Curiously the resort is not reporting any fresh snow on the top Yamabiko area but 5cm on Uenotaira. Poor visibility up on the mountain at the start of the day. Casting an eye over the to forecast is quite exciting... there's a fair amount of snow on there, with it set at 'heavy' at times. Sounds good to me. Expect the decent snowfall to start later in the day tomorrow and perhaps through Saturday, so keep an eye on the forecast and plan around that if you are thinking of being here for the weekend. With the big storm clearing - and if it's not another crazy snow storm that hits the national headlines - I think we can expect this coming weekend to be a popular one. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just slightly over 1cm of fresh snow at my measuring point this morning but I notice the report below is mentioning 10cm of fresh at Niseko base. It is snowing lightly here at the moment Wind is an issue at the start of the day and top lifts are affected. See below for more on that as of 8:30am. So, about the next decent snowfall... I wouldn't expect much before Sunday, but as that day ends it is looking promising. Onegai shimasu! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -５℃, 10cm snowfall but large development of snowdrifts. Moiwa800m: strong winds with snowdrift developments. Annupuri 1150m: -10℃, N20m/s, windswept. Hirafu1250m: -10℃, strong winds. Kamui cape lighthouse: ENE8m/s, 1016hPa, 0.5m waves. Snowdrifts are developing drastically as the passing low-pressure is generating strong north-easterly wind. 60cm thick slabs are sliding with pressure test at 800m elevation. Trigger layer being Jan 17th pre-low pressure snowfall. However, developing snowdrifts and heavy wind-loads can collapse and slide without any predominant weak layers. The overall snowfall amount is small, however highly wind-affected snowdrifts and cornices are very unstable. The avalanche risk is very high today. The hazard level will remain high a while after the wind calms down, better not go out of bounds today. Hazardous conditions in surrounding mountains too. Gates opening is undecided. Please respect the ski patrol’s decision and do not duck ropes. Some troubles have occurred between hikers walking in a closed ski resort and the cat operation company running in there yesterday. Under the Japanese legislation, no ski resort operators have the right to ban people from hiking up Public Park areas, even if these hikers were interfering the CAT’s running course, machine operators have heavier safety responsibilities than walking people. This information is issued for the sake of resort users stepping out of bounds, as well as for the same people recreationally entering Niseko’s surround mountains. Municipality areas, national forest or Hokkaido forest have no differences in the mountains, and snowcats and snowmobile are severely restricted in National park areas. We’re hoping no further troubles would occur on this matter. --- Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): Niseko Grand Hirafu The top Ace Number 4 and King Number 4 lifts are on hold at the start of the day due to strong winds. Niseko HANAZONO Resort All three lifts appear to be planned to be opening as normal. Niseko Village The Niseko Gondola and top Wonderland Chair lift are on hold at the start of the day due to strong winds. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A quick report - the snow is on again! Driveways must be cleared! Some wind early in the morning that has continued on, although not particularly strong at base level. Could be stronger higher up on the mountain. If you're heading offpiste, be extra careful as snows accumulate on the previous snow; we did have sun all day yesterday, and while it's unlikely that a weak layer formed, it's always possible. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba everybody! Well the weather forecast has come through for us today and delivered what was promised. An almost perfect bluebird day with lovely soft groomers all over the mountain. There are exactly two clouds in the sky today and they are those lovely white fluffy ones, not those foreboding storm clouds. Whilst we did get around 30 cm of fresh snow during the day yesterday it did not snow continuously through the night meaning that most of the mountain has been groomed pretty well this morning. Powder should still be possible to find though if you know where to look. Looking on we are meant to get some light snow starting again as of tonight with another storm rolling in on Friday night. First of all, it was great to hear yesterday morning that the people who were missing at the resort were found and apparently unharmed after digging themselves into a snow hole for shelter. We’re very happy to hear that you got back to base and ‘otsukaresama deshita’ to the people who were out looking. Hearing about incidents such as this is definitely a reminder for us all of the dangers that current conditions especially can bring. Take care everyone. OK so yesterday the snow continued through the day and during the day an additional 10-40cm of snowfall has been reported by the resort since yesterday morning. It has now eased and this morning the skies are clearer. Nice and clear up on the mountain, with some early morning low lying fog over the village - that'll very likely clear up fairly soon this morning. It looks like it is going to be a cracker! The sun is forecast to be out and it won’t be quite as cold. It should be a totally excellent day. And...more snow. Due Friday and over the weekend. Oh yeah. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a little more snow yesterday to end this storm cycle, and an amazing storm it was! Today it is sunny and beautiful and the mountains are whiter than we've seen in two years. It is a perfect snow day, with a deep base and blue skies. I'm getting a bit giddy... or is it because I, like a lot of my neighbors, still aren't done clearing snow. And more is on the way. A note on the backcountry (and I wish I could have gotten this out earlier): one of the most respected, veteran skiers around here gave me a call last night about conditions on the hill. A lot of wind compacted snow, plus the light stuff we got on top, was resulting in a lot of slides coming down all over, he said. Perhaps on an open slope these wouldn't be too severe (but still enough to injury), but the Myoko backcountry is valleys and ridges and places where one could easily get buried. The sun and warmth (although the air is cold) could help to settle the snow, but there definitely is risk out there. As we wrote before, too many people think being close to the slopes means safety. In fact, any time you ski off the slopes and into the trees, you're in nature, with all the risks (and fun, too). If you don't have the gear and a friend and experience and a plan, today might be a good day to think twice about what you're doing! Don't go out there like that. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba where the good news continues. This snow storm doesn't seem to want to let up yet. Here's the headlines (new snowfall reported by the resorts): Hakuba Goryu: 40+cm Hakuba Goryu: 15-40cm Hakuba 47: 30-40cm Happo-one: 15cm The last week has been spectacular in terms of snowfall. As you can see in the reports on upper resort areas there's probably been 2m of snowfall - and the rest. Lower areas have also had a good amount of snow too meaning that places are pretty much open as normal now and enjoying peak season conditions. It's great to see official snow depth numbers from Goryu and Tsugaike breaking through the 3m level too. With all of this snow and continued limited visibility with snow still falling this morning, do take care out there. Stick with friends and there's plenty of untouched powder within resort areas. There have been a number of stories on the news of people missing at different resorts around Japan in these current conditions - we don't want to have any further such sad news. Everyone come back safe at the end of the day. Tomorrow might start with clearer skies, which will be a change and a treat for everyone lucky to be here at the moment. There's more heavy snow promised on the forecast as we enter the weekend though, so it looks like the excellent conditions should be continuing. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning to you from Nozawa where snow is still falling! And since yesterday morning the resort has reported another impressive 45cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko area with at least 25cm mountain-wide. There just basically loads of snow everywhere at the moment and top quality stuff too. It's what we love to see. But with so much snow over such a short period of time the dangers increase and extra care and caution is really needed at the moment. Sometimes it might be difficult to stop getting carried away with in all this powder. There's more than enough quality snow on the course areas of the resort. Right now it is highly recommended to stay on them. There may be some sunshine tomorrow as this one storm eases off, but it looks like there's more heavy snow lined up for Friday night and into Saturday. That's what we want from now on, decent regular snowfall. It is very sad to hear yesterday about an Australian family missing at the resort. We very much hope to hear good news on that today as searches continue. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday most of the top areas of the resorts remained closed because of the strong winds so access was limited - and untouched. This morning I have 4cm of fresh snow to report. If I didn't have to go to Sapporo today, I think I'd by trying to head up to those upper areas first thing. It is colder once again and for the moment just mostly cloudy. There is a bit of blue sky showing away from the mountain though and some sunshine breaking through at times. I need to post my report earlier than usual and so no 'at time of opening' status confirmation but I would expect the top areas today to be open.
