- Myoko Now: Thursday 23rd March 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1450cm Posted on Thursday 23rd March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's sunny with a little cover of fresh, which we will very generously call 1cm. Could be more up high, as Suginohara added 5cm to their total. Snow stays on the forecast as well. That's not always great this time of year, as I found out yesterday. Fresh this time of year can be pretty sticky, definitely heavy and doesn't make for fast, smooth skiing. The good thing is that we haven't had a lot of either wind or rain, so the snowpack is holding on strong. Good news for spring skiing as the pack does settle and the warm winds blow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. I am writing my report this morning from.... Tokyo, so I'm going on what I have been told on the phone and what the official website is saying this morning. Please keep that in mind! Looks like there's quite a lot of thin cloud around this morning and an overcast kind of start to the day. The resort was reporting a temperature of -5C on Yamabiko as of 7:15am and... actually, they haven't updated the info for the lower areas yet. I can't confidently put in the new snowfall reported by the resort this morning either as I don't have what they reported yesterday. Oh dear, perhaps I should avoid a report all together this morning! Many apologies. If anyone reading this wants to fill me in, please do contact and we'll happily update! The forecast says there might be a bit more snow overnight tonight. There is also a decent amount of fresh powder around due to yesterday's snowfall with some parts of the mountain boasting 15cm of accumulation although it is more like 7 cm in the base area. Looking on we have snow predicted for every day this week with heavy snowfall predicted as of Sunday night. There is also some rain predicted earlier on Sunday so let's hope this bypasses us. Yes! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 31cm Snowfall at base this season 1088cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Wow! I was expecting some snow but was not quite expecting how much. It feels like mid-winter this morning with around 30cm of snow on the ground. The official lift site is even saying 45cm (!), though I'm not seeing that much - my average measurement from two points is 31cm... and counting. Whatever, it's still an impressive amount to see falling on 22nd March! I'm excited at the prospect of how conditions will be this morning and I am going out as soon as this gets posted. It's funny, I think at least half-joking, a few locals were yesterday saying how they were worried about next season due to how much snow we have got this season. I'm not quite sure it works that way, but we have certainly done well this year! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 1449cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happily (once again) the rain turned to snow; once again the Niigata snow report is right on the money at 6cm. Pretty strong winds through the night, and they're still blowing strong this morning. Some lift closures have begun. Suginohara snuck one in on me by reporting yesterday on their main site that No. 3 is still running; it is not. We should have a rant about why resorts close from the top, where the fun stuff is, rather than the slushy little ones at the bottom, especially when they have plenty of people out there to play (OK, I do understand that you have to keep bottom lifts going for the young, inexperienced, etc. and for transportation....). We often suspect it is the area's dislike of the backcountry. (There. I've said it). Backcountry is not the issue, when people are dropping off cliff bands right next to the ski area with no gear. Backcountry folks are a lot better prepared.... End of rant. Open those lifts! Free our people! - Nozawa Now: Wednesday 22nd March 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 792cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Fresh snow to report this morning and also the official snow depth at Yamabiko going up to 400cm. Excellent! Not bad at all. So the resort is reporting 5-15cm of fresh snow, base to top across the mountain this morning so there should be some great turns to enjoy this morning. It's a bit wetter than peak season of course, but it's fresh snow and needs to be shredded. Looks like limited visibility at higher elevations with snow still falling but somewhat clearer conditions are expecting in the middle of the day with the chance of snow at times tonight and tomorrow too. - Hakuba Now: Wednesday 22nd March 2017
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 517cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I have fresh snow to report to you this morning! Here's the headlines that the resorts are reporting: Hakuba 47: 10-15cm Hakuba Goryu: 1-10cm Hakuba Happo-one: 5cm (though hearing reports of up to 30cm) Hakuba Cortina: 5-10cm (base); 10-15cm (top) 3cm from here at base, so it sounds like there's a (modestly) decent fresh layer of snow out there this morning - and I would imagine more than that higher up of course. Early morning should be good today. As of 8:30am, there's quite a lot of blue sky opening up, though a bank of cloud around the upper mountain areas. Fine weather due for the day perhaps. Although having said that, I have just noticed that top lifts at Goryu, Happo-one and Tsugaike are affected by wind on mountain. The forecast has more snow coming tomorrow evening and then perhaps late weekend into early week as well - so we're not done yet! I'm going to make the most of it. Maybe see some of you out today.
