The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have a good 10cm of fresh snowfall to report this morning. It's a cold morning and the snow delivered to my door looks to be suitably lovely dry quality. The kind we like! It should be a really nice morning actually as there is a mix of cloud, blue sky and sunshine at the start of the day. And happily the wind seems to have calmed down. Nice. Some local forecasts are showing the chance of some sunshine in the day tomorrow as well, though there's regular snowfall sprinkled across the forecast into early next week as well. So perhaps we can expect modest regular top-ups? I'm not wishing my days away though; I think I am going to go out and sample the goods this morning. Hope to speak to a few of you on the lifts! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -7, 10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -11.9℃, 15cm snowfall, calm. Annupuri 1150m: -12℃, 20cm snowfall with snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -15℃, 15cm snowfall, SW10m/s, spots of snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape SW3m/s, Kamui cape SSW20m/s, 1001hPa, 2.2m waves. The general weather is calm under a low pressure zone, except some area closer to the center of the Low pressure such as Kamui cape near the Sea of Japan. The snowdrift development has settled during the night and snowdrifts are stabilizing. No notable weakness has been observed in the snowpack during the morning pressure test. The general avalanche risk is low. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Listen to the skip patrol’s instructions and prepare yourself to the backcountry. The snow is in excellent condition. Hazards of slides from deeper layers are still present, do not stimulate knolls and cornices and do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. The ski patrol stopped some people as they tried to skin up from closed Gate 6 in Moiwa. Gates are being closed for good reasons and Niseko Rules does not allow anyone going out of bounds when gates are closed. The Niseko Rules are implemented for the safety and freedom of all resort users. Touring safely in bad weather conditions require considerable experience, knowledge and commitment. The gates are within the resort and anyone using the resort facility must abide by the resort’s regulations, which are the Niseko Rules. It’s getting a little nicer on the snow surface; some people were reporting great powder on top of the icy remains of the rain, especially around Suginohara, and not too high up. The trees are white again, and it looks like there was more than the 7 cm that we got with a poke of the stick in the study plot this morning. Light snow began to fall again around 7am, so hopefully the reset will continue. The ski areas should be really good, though! Nice and cold again, with a little fresh continuing to season the slopes... Yesterday was warm, as was forecast, with the temperatures causing severe melt around town and causing monstrous puddles on the roads and plenty of slush on footpaths and carparks. This morning it is still not so cold, but at least we are below freezing. Overnight there has been 13cm of snow but it is pretty heavy due to the warm weather. This morning it is very windy and I would expect this to affect lift operations, so best to check with the resort for the latest information. The wind is so strong it is whipping up a lot of snow causing temporary periods of whiteouts, so take care if driving around the resort. A great day to go for an onsen and let the stormy weather pass. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. That early rain and sleet of yesterday is behind us now - thankfully - and we actually have a bit more snow on the ground this morning but for the moment visibility is good and there's even some sun breaking through the mostly cloudy skies. There is still some wind out and it feels cold; all resort areas appear to be opening as normal at the start of the day. Snow is expected soon and overnight tonight and hopefully fairly regular snow into the weekend too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Happily, yesterday is over and we can begin today! I measured 6cm of fresh snow to report to you this morning here near Hirafu base. There will surely be more than that on the mountain - and quite possibly in other places around lower down too - as strong winds were blowing yesterday. I am happy to report that it is snowing nicely at the moment. The new 6cm brings my snowfall over the first 10 reports of January up to 49cm. That is definitely a slow down from that excite pace that we experienced in November and December. Not to worry, it's just an observation! The forecast is showing steady regular snow through into the weekend so fingers crossed we can get back to larger numbers. It still feels a little windy this morning, and at the time of this report going live top lifts are affected. Info updated below. Take care out there. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 15cm snowfall, stormy and snow drifts developing. Moiwa 800m: -8.7℃, W16m/s, big storm, cornices and snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1150m: -13℃, max wind W37m/s, large snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃, development of wind-packed snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW19m/s, Kamui cape WSW16m/s, 993hPa, 3.4m waves. A strong westerly wind has picked up as the low-pressure system moved east, making snowdrifts and cornices drastically develop in leeward aspects. Those snowdrifts are very unstable, 60cm thick slab above yesterday’s hail layer slid during this morning’s pressure test. The overall avalanche hazard is extremely high today. Snowdrifts patches and hard wind-blown ice are alternately present. Snowdrifts are densely wind-packed with ripples. Past accident in Osawa (Annupuri bowl) has occurred during similar conditions. Peak gates, Annupuri No8, Hanazono No5 and Moiwa No6 gates will be closed. Please obey the ski patrol’s instructions. Windpacked snowdrifts may look stable, however once cracked, they can turn into a large slide. Avalanche accidents mostly occur during and just after storms. The snow condition is ever changing. Better not push it today. Heavy and dense wind-affected snow is unevenly present in the trees below 800m. Catchy snow and easy to loose control. Beware. The weather will get better soon. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Dust on crust today. The Niigata prefecture forecast (one of the most accurate in getting snowfall right) predicted 15cm; we got 4. It is snowing, much colder than yesterday, and the rain-soaked snow of yesterday has turned to ice on top, softer underneath. Not great for offpiste skiing (and I am being polite). The winds are still very strong offshore, as they are all along the Japan Sea coast, and they could get stronger. Lotte Arai Resort did close down early in the day, although the lower lifts were open later. I see that one lift is closed right now - just keep an eye on what happens as gondolas, especially, will stop running as the winds pick up. Just hoping that tonight’s potential heavy snow becomes a reality, and that the rain layer in the snow just slowly disappears (as often happens here) into the snowpack, and things are safe for the backcountry crowd. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. I was hoping we would avoid rain up here in Shiga Kogen, but unfortunately that isn't wasn't case. It was raining overnight. And it was raining when I got up but the good news is that it has turned into snow. Yes, it is snowing now. Phew. Definitely very mild though (* for mid-winter Shiga Kogen, of course). There is a dusting of snow on the top of my car, just about enough for me to record 1cm in this report; let's hope that is starts building up again. The forecast is positive for snow today and maybe heavier snow tomorrow. Look out for possibly strong winds though. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been no new snow overnight and today, stepping outside feels very mild. Checking the temperature I got -4c and later in the day this is expected to rise to +1c. So expect the snow to get heavy as the temperature increases. The cloud is quite high and still affords views across Furano town. The rain that was expected today looks like it will arrive tomorrow and the winds are forecast to get stronger tomorrow. Unfortunately I was unable to post a report yesterday but there was an impressive dump of 16cm of snow, meaning yesterday was a fantastic powder day. A bit of snowfall since my report yesterday, the snow eased off and we enjoyed some clearer weather conditions for a while. There is no fresh snow to report from overnight. We start the day today with cloudy skies. Higher temperatures today into tomorrow... can we avoid rain here and go straight into snow? Whichever it is, snow is lined up on the forecast from tomorrow. Today is a national holiday in Japan and so will be busier than a normal Monday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have just a 3cm of fresh snowfall to report to you since my report yesterday. It looks like most - all? - regions of Japan are going to experience something of a warm up today, tonight and into tomorrow. Temperatures are going to rise and... we might get rained on tonight. Nooooooo! The good news is that snow is due back tomorrow and possibly heavy snow on Wednesday. Yes! We shall see. The hope is for rain to be limited and be snow quickly. For now, Hirafu are reporting sleet at base and snow higher up and Annupuri are reporting snow. It won't be the light and fluffy kind though. It will be interesting to see what we get over the next 24 hours I will of course let you know how things are going this time tomorrow. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -2°, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m : -3.4°, W3.8, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -5°, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -6°, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:WNW11m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW12m/s, 1014hPa, wave 1.4m. Currently we are under influence of low pressure system, the pressure gradient is shallow and weather is calm. Expect the temperature to rise as the low pressure system approaches from the Japan Sea. At 800m, 30cm of snowdrift growth on leeward slopes was observed at the 4am survey. In some areas yesterdays tracks are also covered. From tests there is no obvious weak layer and with other data general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Although it didn't snow much, the resorts groomers are in fantastic condition. Off the runs is tracked out from yesterday still, be careful going fast and hitting trees. Also careful falling into holes. Yesterday at Waterfall Gate 9 someone had to be rescued. Do not ever enter Strictly Off Limits areas Haru no Taki and YunoSawa. If one person ignores the rules and enters others will follow their tracks leading to increased chances of an accident. Under Niseko Rules it is prohibited to ride in these areas. In Niseko we respect your right to ride safely out off bounds. Make sure if you are going out of bounds you do so through a gate. Beware of a sudden weather change. Actually snowing quite heavily right now in Maruike, though it is fine snow rather than big fluffy flakes. Looks a little windy as well for the moment. Snow isn't expected to last long today though with clearer skies possible later on. Still hoping we will avoid the rain that lower elevations seem destined to get tomorrow. Straight into snow should be good. But do expect milder than usual conditions tomorrow. Second day of the busy long weekend. Have fun! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Interesting that we have got a nice new layer of snow overnight with snow still falling now. The resort itself is reporting 10-20cm of snow across the mountain. The forecast is for this snow to ease off leaving us with a cloudy day, so perhaps we might still get some sun like I mentioned yesterday. Or maybe not! So early morning it is light snow and limited visibility, due to get clearer. Now let's take a look at the forecast. Rain in the village is looking possible (likely) later in the day as temperatures get rather mild - hopefully at the same time it will be snow up top - and Wednesday onwards there's some decent snow to look forward to. All go this morning on this busy weekend, with all lifts operating and only the Challenge 39, Grand Prix and Kandahar course areas unavailable.
