  • Niseko Now: Saturday 10th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 937cm Posted on Saturday 10th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning to you all and welcome to the first day of this long weekend. This morning I have 3cm of fresh snow to report from yesterday, with light snow currently falling. It is noticeably warmer this morning and the snow that is falling reflects that (it's not big, light, fluffy flakes). Visibility looks rather limited on the webcams and the resorts are reporting foggy conditions up top. But lifts appear to be starting up for the day as planned - oh, apart from the top Wonderland Chair lift at Niseko Village as I get this report ready to go up at 8:30am. Maybe a changing situation with the lifts - best to check. Is that bloke on the Hirafu gondola webcam waving to us? I think he is. Hi! By tomorrow temps should be lower once again and the snow forecast is looking good through next week. I haven't been able to report that much snow over the last week - only 25cm over the last 9 reports - so I am looking forward to a return to hopefully bringing you good snowy news each morning. Have a good Saturday and take care. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -3℃, no snowfall, calm. Moiwa800: -4℃, light snow, W3.5m/s, Annupuri1150m: -7℃, light breeze and snow. Hirafu peak ridge1250m: -7℃, S15m/s, strong wind and thick fog, no snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape W12m/s, Kamui cape W19m/s, 1013hPa, 1.5m waves. Relatively calm weather overnight without much new snowfall. The snowdrifts are stable and the overall avalanche risk is low. An atmospheric pressure trench is approaching as the next Low is rolling in, and would generate snowfall from this morning. All gates are expected to open, however may close as the weather deteriorates. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. Some areas in the out of bounds is tracked out, be careful to remain in control. Guides are responsible to fully pay attention to their guests safety. Many risks are lurking in the mountains, however most hazards can be avoided if basic safety points are being considered. Beware of cracks, sudden weather changes and poor visibility. Do not traverse steep slopes and knolls. Do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. The wind is forecasted to pick up above 1100m elevation during the day. Have a nice day. --- Saturday 10th February 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from King Number 2) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 425cm - Base: 210cm Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating - The top Wonderland Chair lift is on standby at the start of the day Official snow depth: - Top: 360cm - Base: 230cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from the Country Road Chair lift) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 360cm - Base: 230cm --- Floodlit 'nighta' skiing: Night skiing is planned for every evening at the Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri areas. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The much needed replenishment of snow started late yesterday and continues as of now. There is a total of 10cm of fresh in the village and I would expect up to double that on the upper slopes. Needless to say it will be a great powder morning. There is only a slight breeze, but the cloud is low today and rolling right down the face of the resort. Hopefully this will lift later, but for now visibility will be varied and a bit limited at elevation. Have a great day! Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. A bit of snow on the ground with some snowfall overnight and the resort reporting up to 5cm. Looks like it's going to be another really nice start to the day and sun is forecast for today and tomorrow. Tomorrow still going to get rather mild (temps up to around 6 or 7C during the day) but we should be back to snow by - and during - Sunday. • Niseko Now: Friday 9th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 934cm Posted on Friday 9th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have measured 11cm of fresh snowfall to report to you, and some delicious looking flakes of snow are falling outside of my window as I type this out. With 20cm being reported higher up, it should be a decent refresh out there this morning. It's not going to be as cold today and warmer still tomorrow when temperatures during the day are likely to warm up into positive number territory. Hopefully come Sunday we'll be back into minus numbers and we'll be getting back into quality dry snowfall. Sunday 11th February is 'National Foundation Day' in Japan. Apparently... 'National Foundation Day (建国記念の日 Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) is celebrated annually on February 11, celebrating the foundation of Japan and the accession of its first emperor, Emperor Jimmu on 11 February 660 BC' So now you know. Due to it being on a Sunday, Monday is a national holiday in Japan meaning that many workers have a long weekend to look forward to. And of course, the Chinese New Year is also very nearly with us and so there will be many visitors coming to celebrate their holidays in Niseko. As you do. So it is going to be a very busy few weeks. Thankfully, the forecast is currently showing regular snowfall well into next week. (A dry patch would... not be good). Keep it coming! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 5cm snowfall and snowdrifts development. Moiwa800m: -9℃, NW8.5m/s, large development of cornices and snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW13m/s, Kamui cape WSW12m/s, 1018hPa, 1.9m waves. 50cm cornice development in the past 12hours has been observed around 800m. The wind has been blowing around 12m/s (with gusts), the snowdrifts under 1000m elevation is stabilizing. The leeward slopes above 1000m, such as Backbowl’s western slopes, are still unstable; 50cm thick (Feb 8th snowdrifts) and/or 80cm thick (Feb 5th low pressure snowfall) are to be expected. Beware. All gates are expected to open. Do not unnecessarily stimulate cornices and knolls. Be conscious of glide avalanches from opening cracks. The treeruns has a good amount of wind-affected dense snow and is great for riding. Always use gates to go out of bounds. There is always a certain amount of risk in the winter mountains. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 659cm Weather overview Mostly blue sky Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted on Thursday 8th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. More sunshine and blue skies (with a bit of think cloud) this morning over our mountain. We did get some fresh snow with the clouds moving in and delivery yesterday. This morning the resort is reporting 5cm and I am actually measuring 12cm. Sun is probably going to be the main feature of the weather over the next few days. Saturday is due to be mild but it be getting cold by night time with fresh snow due before my report on Sunday... and we could be on for a decent amount too as we enter next week. A mix of sunshine and regular fresh snow with a snow storm fairly regularly - sounds like a good pattern that. Let's hope it keeps on going right through the next few months. It's a good pattern, especially if there's up to 30cm of fresh snow coming during the night! This morning the Kumanoyu area is reporting 20-30cm of fresh; I am measuring 18cm. And it's cold and sunny now. Excellent. Sun is expected tomorrow too. Things seem set to change at the weekend. Up here in Shiga Kogen snow should start falling by the end of the day and at least a few days of snow - heavy at times - is forecast. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Them there snow clouds did indeed visit us yesterday after that fine start and by 3pm the resort was reporting 4-7cm of snow on the upper areas of the resort with a few cm lower down and this morning the total snowfall reported by Nozawa is headlined by the 27cm at top Yamabiko and just over 10cm at base. So a nice new layer this morning. Some low cloud aside, the clouds have dispersed again and blue skies are above the mountain. It is looking likely that today and tomorrow will be all about sun and while it's cold this morning over the next few days temperatures are going to be rising towards a high on Saturday. The next snowfall is due Saturday night but before that there looks to be a chance of rain - particular at lower elevations. Fingers crossed we can miss that and it just gets colder and starts snowing. In the meantime, a very fine few days ahead. Let's Nozawa! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. The wind got itself under control yesterday and snow was falling on mountain by later in the afternoon. This morning the ski resorts are reporting just a thin layer of snow on the mountain (generally 1-2cm), though I suspect there was more than that up there.... but, hey, them be the numbers being reported. There's cloud around this morning, but there's some blue sky too. A different feel/look depending on which direction you look in. I'd expect sunshine today and tomorrow though. Looks like temps are going to warm up come Saturday and there's even the chance of rain but what comes after that looks pretty tasty - lots of snow. It should be a good few days; but keep your eye on the forecasts for Saturday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 923cm Posted on Thursday 8th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have 7cm of fresh snow to add to my reports and I notice 15cm being reported from Moiwa (below). So a modest refresh which should be nice to ride on. As I write the report this morning snow is falling, but it's quite bright and there is also blue sky in places so a somewhat confusing - and very pretty - mix of conditions. Perhaps some more light snow today, or perhaps clearing skies? Resorts are opening as planned this morning. Maybe no snow tomorrow and then slightly milder conditions on Saturday. Beyond that, the forecast is looking pretty good over the coming week and with the Chinese New Year holidays fast approaching, we can hopefully look forward to a fresh delivery of snow daily to fill in tracks (please). Perhaps with some sunshine during the day for the views. Onegai shimasu! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃,10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -9℃, WNW3.6m/s, 15cm snowfall, snowdrifts developed at night until dawn. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, W7m/s, 10cm snowfall, 330cm snowpack at 1000m. Hirafu1250m: -11℃, northerly wind & snow before dawn with 5cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW13m/s, Kamui cape WSW13m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves. A light storm under 15m/s has persisted over the Sea of Japan, however the isobars are spreading out and the wind is starting to calm down in lower elevations. A northerly wind has picked up overnight and made cornices and snowdrifts develop. Surface slab avalanches are to be expected during the morning at knolls and around cornices above 800m elevation. Potential sliding layer is Feb 5-7th’ low pressure snowfall. The new snowdrifts are yet to form notable slabs, however are dangerous enough. All gates are expected to open. Please seek the patrol’s advice and be well prepared before stepping out of the gate. The snow in the trees is fairly good, probably a little better than yesterday’s. Avoid cornices and knolls. Cracks in the Mikaeri bowl area are growing. Glide cracks are forming due to heavy amount of snow, predominantly in south facing aspects. These cracks are forming as the slope is releasing its own tension. They most probably won’t slide right away, however chances of glide avalanches are to be expected. Stay away from slopes without wrinkles under cracks. Do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. Avalanches strike from above. There is no 100% safety in the mountains, however most risks can be avoided by making conservative decisions. Beware of sudden weather change and falling in cracks, they are difficult to notice from above. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 7th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 916cm Posted on Wednesday 7th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The Avalanche report below is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall, but I can only report 1cm. (Actually I measured 8mm, but adding in that sprinkling from the other day makes me feel good about declaring 1cm). Very (very) light snow has been falling as I put this report together, but you almost have to look hard to see it. So unless it changes it isn't the kind of snowfall that results in much. I really don't have much else to say this morning. So, until tomorrow... --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 10cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Moiwa800m: -12℃, NNE5m/s, 17m/s at night making snowdrifts grow large. Annupuri1150m: -15℃, NE15m/s, 10cm snowfall with cornice and snowdrifts developing. Hirafu1250m: light dusts, strong wind at night. Coastal data: Benkei cape ESE6m/s, Kamui cape NNE2m/s, 1008hPa, 1.6m waves. Strong NE wind overnight with scarce snowfall, however made the cornices and snowdrifts grow drastically. The wind is calming down now. Peak gates are scheduled to open, please follow the patrol’s instructions. Snowdrifts have developed in leeward slopes due to the strong NE wind. This new deposit can easily slide from Feb 6th layer and the avalanche risk is high. Hardpack wind-affected snow slabs in high elevation slopes, such as the Backbowl’s sidewalls, could easily slide with riding stimulation. A falling cornice triggered an avalanche near Annupuri Gate 2 this morning and buried a snow cat. The crown measured 60cm. Many of the past avalanche accidents in Niseko occurred just after strong winds and been caused by sliding slabs that developed under windy conditions. Leeward slopes with heavy load of dense wind-affected snow are very likely to slide. Do not stimulate cornices and snowdrifts and stay away from valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is in pretty good shape. Beware of falling into cracks and sudden weather changes. Have a nice day. --- Wednesday 7th February 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from King Number 2) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 410cm - Base: 190cm Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 360cm - Base: 230cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from the Country Road Chair lift) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 360cm - Base: 240cm Niseko Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Wednesday 7th February 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 916cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 67 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (31st December) November 2017 snowfall 188cm reported on 11 days December 2017 snowfall 406cm reported on 27 days January 2018 snowfall 305cm reported on 26 days February 2018 snowfall 17cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko.
