Continuous light snow is on the forecast for today but there is nothing falling at the moment. The temperature is warm again and snow conditions are likely to be a bit heavy on the lower slopes with best conditions higher up. Good morning from Shiga Kogen A little (wet) snow overnight and while it had eased off earlier on, it is snowing once again now and coming down at quite a rate actually here in Hasuike as of 9:10am. A look around webcams show some varying conditions at the moment, but hopefully we will see some more snow during the day today. It is still relatively mild - though keeping under zero - but much colder temperatures are due tomorrow, hopefully along with continue snowfall. Limited visibility in places at the moment. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nagano. Yes, I'm not actually in Hakuba this morning and so my report is being helped by some helping helpers. The good news is that it seems the news this morning is (wet) snow rather than rain - and I'm not totally sure if my helpers are fully disclosing what happened yesterday afternoon but we can get past that! On to this morning and here is how much snow the ski resorts are reporting this morning: Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm (top Gondola station) Hakuba Goryu: up to 10cm on top areas Hakuba 47: up to 5cm Hakuba Cortina: 2-4cm So it certainly could be worse given the forecast and warmer conditions yesterday. Today is set to be colder than yesterday with temperatures hopefully once again able to get down below zero. And the forecast seems to be looking positive for snow for the next few days, so I'm feeling good about returning to Hakuba this evening. This morning ski resorts appear to be opening on schedule though visibility is looking rather limited at the start of the day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's Sunday and the middle of this three day long weekend sandwich (or in my case, toastie). Just a bit of snow to report to you - 3cm - and it is cloudy as I write this report. Light snow was falling earlier, but that has eased off now. A little disappointing perhaps, but hopefully things are going to start getting more exciting later on today. The forecast is still looking promising for snow - though strong winds might well be an issue. Anyway, let's see what develops. --- It's busy-busy-busy here at the moment. I went out to meet a some friends for a few drinks last night and was reminded at just how busy Hirafu can get, particularly in this peak part of the season. I usually don't venture out in the evening during this period - one less person at the bar is probably better for everyone! There's certainly a party atmosphere though, and everyone where I was seemed to be having a blast. And with the Chinese New Year holidays from this week, things are being ramped up that bit more. This year Chinese New Year is on 16th February - please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the festival period lasts for 15 days from Chinese New Year Eve to Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year with holidays from 15th-21st February. The slopes, the bars, the restaurants... are going to be busy! Planning for all these things is recommended. Here's to large doses of fun (and fresh snow) for everyone. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -5°, 3cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.8°, NNW1.1m/s, 5cm new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -8.5°, light winds, 5cm new snow, no snowdrift development, foggy around 700m. Snowpack 1000m: 330cm. Hirafu 1250m: -9°, gusty light winds, trace new snow, bad visibility at peak. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNE8m/s. Kamui Cape: NNW7m/s, 1003hPa, wave 0.7m. We are in the middle of a low pressure system, the pressure gradient is shallow and mountains and seas are both calm. There is dense fog on the mountain between 700m and 900m and only a little new snow with no snowdrift development. From observation general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. Prepare before going out of bounds. Yesterday all peak gates were closed and slopes are covered with low pressure snowfall. If the low pressure snowfall continues, flow type avalanches could occur on steep slopes over 30deg, including forested slopes. Also be careful around 1000m in Kozan no Sawa. These slopes will be even more dangerous if wind slabs start to form. Be aware, even in the forest. Do not ignore Niseko Rules and enter strictly off limits area Haru no Taki. There is no avalanche control work done in Haru no Taki and there is always the danger of an avalanche. With this winters large snowpack, there is risk of a large scale full depth avalanche at anytime, regardless of temperature or time. Do not disregard the danger. You also need to careful entering Kozan no Sawa, Osawa, Mikaeri Sawa and Higashi One for same reason. To avoid accidents keep away from cracked slopes and the valley bottoms. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is -7c right now, but the temperature is set to rise rapidly going positive with a high of around +1c. Moderate rain is also forecast at village level around the middle of the day, but the upper resort should be fine and receive snow instead. The sky is partly cloudy and plenty of morning sun is hitting the slopes. There was a bit more snow after the report yesterday, around 4cm, but it has not snowed overnight. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning to you all and welcome to the first day of this long weekend. This morning I have 3cm of fresh snow to report from yesterday, with light snow currently falling. It is noticeably warmer this morning and the snow that is falling reflects that (it's not big, light, fluffy flakes). Visibility looks rather limited on the webcams and the resorts are reporting foggy conditions up top. But lifts appear to be starting up for the day as planned - oh, apart from the top Wonderland Chair lift at Niseko Village as I get this report ready to go up at 8:30am. Maybe a changing situation with the lifts - best to check. Is that bloke on the Hirafu gondola webcam waving to us? I think he is. Hi! By tomorrow temps should be lower once again and the snow forecast is looking good through next week. I haven't been able to report that much snow over the last week - only 25cm over the last 9 reports - so I am looking forward to a return to hopefully bringing you good snowy news each morning. Hirafu peak ridge1250m: -7℃, S15m/s, strong wind and thick fog, no snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape W12m/s, Kamui cape W19m/s, 1013hPa, 1.5m waves. Relatively calm weather overnight without much new snowfall. The snowdrifts are stable and the overall avalanche risk is low. An atmospheric pressure trench is approaching as the next Low is rolling in, and would generate snowfall from this morning. All gates are expected to open, however may close as the weather deteriorates. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. Some areas in the out of bounds is tracked out, be careful to remain in control. Guides are responsible to fully pay attention to their guests safety. Many risks are lurking in the mountains, however most hazards can be avoided if basic safety points are being considered. Beware of cracks, sudden weather changes and poor visibility. Do not traverse steep slopes and knolls. Do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. The wind is forecasted to pick up above 1100m elevation during the day. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The much needed replenishment of snow started late yesterday and continues as of now. There is a total of 10cm of fresh in the village and I would expect up to double that on the upper slopes. Needless to say it will be a great powder morning. There is only a slight breeze, but the cloud is low today and rolling right down the face of the resort. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. I'm off to Tokyo this morning and so an early report; but I wish I was staying here...! A bit of snow on the ground with some snowfall overnight and the resort reporting up to 5cm. Looks like it's going to be another really nice start to the day and sun is forecast for today and tomorrow. Tomorrow still going to get rather mild (temps up to around 6 or 7C during the day) but we should be back to snow by - and during - Sunday. Watch out for the chance of rain before the snow comes though, particularly at lower elevations. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have measured 11cm of fresh snowfall to report to you, and some delicious looking flakes of snow are falling outside of my window as I type this out. With 20cm being reported higher up, it should be a decent refresh out there this morning. It's not going to be as cold today and warmer still tomorrow when temperatures during the day are likely to warm up into positive number territory. Hopefully come Sunday we'll be back into minus numbers and we'll be getting back into quality dry snowfall. Sunday 11th February is 'National Foundation Day' in Japan. Apparently... 'National Foundation Day (建国記念の日 Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) is celebrated annually on February 11, celebrating the foundation of Japan and the accession of its first emperor, Emperor Jimmu on 11 February 660 BC' So now you know. Due to it being on a Sunday, Monday is a national holiday in Japan meaning that many workers have a long weekend to look forward to. And of course, the Chinese New Year is also very nearly with us and so there will be many visitors coming to celebrate their holidays in Niseko. As you do. So it is going to be a very busy few weeks. Thankfully, the forecast is currently showing regular snowfall well into next week. (A dry patch would... not be good). Keep it coming! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -8℃, 5cm snowfall and snowdrifts development. Moiwa800m: -9℃, NW8.5m/s, large development of cornices and snowdrifts. Annupuri1150m: -14℃, strong NW wind, developing cornices and snowdrifts. 330cm snowpack at 1000m. Hirafu 1250m: -11℃, light wind at night, 20cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW13m/s, Kamui cape WSW12m/s, 1018hPa, 1.9m waves. 50cm cornice development in the past 12hours has been observed around 800m. The wind has been blowing around 12m/s (with gusts), the snowdrifts under 1000m elevation is stabilizing. The leeward slopes above 1000m, such as Backbowl’s western slopes, are still unstable; 50cm thick (Feb 8th snowdrifts) and/or 80cm thick (Feb 5th low pressure snowfall) are to be expected. Beware. All gates are expected to open. Do not unnecessarily stimulate cornices and knolls. Be conscious of glide avalanches from opening cracks. The treeruns has a good amount of wind-affected dense snow and is great for riding. Always use gates to go out of bounds. There is always a certain amount of risk in the winter mountains. Always be prudent. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. That pattern of snow overnight and sun in the morning is continuing. It's a good pattern, especially if there's up to 30cm of fresh snow coming during the night! This morning the Kumanoyu area is reporting 20-30cm of fresh; I am measuring 18cm. And it's cold and sunny now. Excellent. Sun is expected tomorrow too. Things seem set to change at the weekend. Up here in Shiga Kogen snow should start falling by the end of the day and at least a few days of snow - heavy at times - is forecast. (Lower down in the valleys, rain is still there on the forecast as temperatures are going to be a big higher). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. The wind got itself under control yesterday and snow was falling on mountain by later in the afternoon. This morning the ski resorts are reporting just a thin layer of snow on the mountain (generally 1-2cm), though I suspect there was more than that up there.... but, hey, them be the numbers being reported. There's cloud around this morning, but there's some blue sky too. A different feel/look depending on which direction you look in. I'd expect sunshine today and tomorrow though. Looks like temps are going to warm up come Saturday and there's even the chance of rain but what comes after that looks pretty tasty - lots of snow. It should be a good few days; but keep your eye on the forecasts for Saturday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 607cm Posted on Thursday 8th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Them there snow clouds did indeed visit us yesterday after that fine start and by 3pm the resort was reporting 4-7cm of snow on the upper areas of the resort with a few cm lower down and this morning the total snowfall reported by Nozawa is headlined by the 27cm at top Yamabiko and just over 10cm at base. So a nice new layer this morning. Some low cloud aside, the clouds have dispersed again and blue skies are above the mountain. It is looking likely that today and tomorrow will be all about sun and while it's cold this morning over the next few days temperatures are going to be rising towards a high on Saturday. The next snowfall is due Saturday night but before that there looks to be a chance of rain - particular at lower elevations. Fingers crossed we can miss that and it just gets colder and starts snowing. In the meantime, a very fine few days ahead. Let's Nozawa!
