The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After the rain we got yesterday, I am happy to be able to report some fresh snow this morning. Just a bit - I am measuring 3cm - and light snow falling as I prepare the report. So not a total reset of course, but hopefully there will be some more as you go higher up. There's some snow on the forecast too on and off in the coming days, so fingers crossed! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -3℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -5.5℃, WNW7.9m/s. Annupuri1150m: -7℃, N5m/s, 3cm snowfall, wet snow below 1000m. Hirafu peak: -6℃, 5cm snowfall. Benkei cape NNE13m/s, Kamui cape ENE3m/s, 1012hPa, 2.3m waves. 3-5cm new snow is blanketing the mountain. 20cm snowdrift just below ridgeline in 800m western area leeward slopes. Surface slab avalanche risk is moderately high in slopes above 900m. Caution is required in open steep slopes. New snow is pretty good but shallow, beware of overspeeding, falling into cracks and hitting trees. All gates are expected to open. Glide avalanche from 1000m upper cornice/snowdrift slopes are to be highly expected. Drastic changes in temperature can also trigger those slides. Stay away from valley bottoms. There are no chances to override a glide avalanche. Creeks are also swelling with the snowmelt. Falling from snowbridges could easily lead to crucial situation. Cross valley/creeks carefully. This information is issued for the safety of all resort users. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning. Monday morning once again. And I am happy to be able to bring you news of fresh snowfall on the ground at base. I have just about 5cm to report and it is still snowing now as I am putting this report together. There's not much wind that I can tell and not being reported by the ski resorts either so I would expect everywhere to be open as well as the gates. We might even get some sunshine today so it should be a decent day. Warmer temperatures are likely tomorrow along with the chance of some rain, so keep an eye on that if you are making cunning plans for the next few days. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -2℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -3.7℃, NW0.5m/s, Annupuri 1000m snowpack 440cm. Hirafu peak: -5℃, light wind, 5cm snowfall. Benkei cape N13m/s, Kamui cape NNE8m/s, 1016hPa, 0.6m waves. A small low-pressure passed and brought cold air inflow with snowfall from the north. The mountain is blanketed with a thin layer of new snow. Visibility is pretty bad in some spots up above 1000m as cold/warm air mass is relocating. The overall avalanche risk is low, all gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrol’s advice and be well prepared before stepping out of bounds. The snow underneath the new snow can be a bit tricky to ski, please be careful. Many cracks are forming in south facing steep/cliff slopes in all elevation. Glide avalanche hazard is raising especially in Hirafu O-hiroma, Haru no Taki, Mikaeri bowl naka-one area. Glide avalanches due to temperature variation could also occur suddenly, even without any prominent cracks, in far-Higashi One, Backbowl and upper Osawa. Better not stay put under steep slopes and at valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is pretty good. Thin surface slab slides may occur in open steep faces. Please stay vigilant anytime. It’s always nice to have everything a little more pristine and white, even if fresh snow is kind of a pain if you’re going off into the woods (powder or settled snow, I say). It has been snowing early on as well but I'm not measuring quite that much. Still, it's great to see fresh snow on the ground. And it is definitely feeling colder as well. That's what we like. Nozawa is reporting 5cm at Yamabiko, 11cm at Uenotaira and 3cm on Nagasaka lower down and I can report a few cm by base too. Good to see, even though we'd like to see more than that of course! The skies might clear up and the sun might come out later on though it should be keeping quite cold today. A little warmer tomorrow with more sunshine expected. Don't hold your breath for any decent fresh snowfall over the coming week. Rather, early week milder temperatures and sun look like they'll be the main headline. That doesn't mean that there's not fun to be had of course - there's a lot of spring fun ahead of us. Almost 2 months of it if the snow lasts! I'm still holding on to the idea of more fresh snow ahead of us. I'm definitely going to try and make the most of it. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's just a dusting of fresh snow to report this morning here at base. Not quite 1cm, but there have been days when there's been an extra few mm, so I'm going to award the reports a mighty 1cm this morning! I am hearing reports of around 3-5cm higher up on the mountain this morning. It's colder today which is very welcome and hopefully we will see some sunshine. For now it is cloudy with some blue sky. Hopefully that rain is out of the system now and we can get on enjoying some spring skiing. And indeed, snowboarding. We need to enjoy what we have as there's not much in terms of snow potential. --- You may have noticed a very short time of downtime yesterday with the website. Actually, apparently it only lasted less than 5 minutes. But hopefully you will this morning notice that the website in general is whizzing around rather quickly and pages are loading nice and faster than before. That's because SnowJapan has moved to a brand new server that is packing a lot more muscle. I hear it is shiny too. The new hardware will let us cope with the annually increasing traffic into the coming years. At times this season there had been a bit of a 'bottleneck' early morning when large numbers of people were checking the reports, but that should not be the case now. In theory, more than triple the number of people can now access the site at exactly the same time. Hurray! A big 'otsukaresama' to all the guys involved - it's way more complex and stressful than just a case of copying a bunch of files. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -5°, 2cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.3°, NW3.0m/s, 5cm new snow, inconsistent snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -8°, NW5m/s, trace new snow. Hirafu peak: -10°, light winds, 3cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNE6m/s. Kamui Cape: SE2m/s, 1021hPa, wave 1.9m. The warm low pressure system has moved of to the north east and a north west snow wind is now blowing. Snow drift and cornice development at Moiwa peak over the last 12 hours has mainly been from wind blown snow which has settled down now. The warm air and strong winds yesterday have caused irregular snow drift development. From this mornings observation, there is the possibility of surface avalanches on leeward slopes, fracturing on Mar 9th low pressure snowfall layer at about 40cm. Be careful on cornice slopes and around knolls. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Be prepared before going out of bounds. Snow drift conditions are not bad, however there is a wet layer below the surface which can easily catch you. Ride carefully and take constant note of snow conditions. There is high possibility of a full depth avalanche at Kozan no Sawa 1000m elev, Annupuri Osawa 1000m elev SE slope. If an avalanche occurs it will be extremely dangerous. Avoid riding in the valley bottom, this is where the avalanche will run. Guides and group leaders remember you are responsible for the safety of your group. Do not lead groups onto cornice slopes or into valley bottoms. Death cookies on the groomers in places today, take care.
