Well, there's some cloud around this morning - some patches of clearer sky earlier on, but generally now it is not as sunny-fine as we thought it might be. Perhaps it will get to be clearer... after the stormy conditions of yesterday it kind of feels like we deserve a bit of sun! It's cold too this morning. Snow conditions should be really good. The snow being reported here is what fell after my report yesterday morning. Wind was really blowing it around yesterday - there's some nice deep conditions to be found. Take care and have fun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Brrrr, it's a very cold start to the morning. No fresh snow to report overnight but there I have a bit to record since my report yesterday. I am not finding any reports of fresh snow from the ski resorts. Things cleared up somewhat by the middle of the day yesterday with some blue sky appearing though some cloud remained. Maybe some snow overnight tonight but beyond that we can probably expect some clearer weather over the upcoming long weekend (Monday is a national holiday). Next decent snow beyond that brewing up for around Tuesday, so let's keep an eye on that. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. It's shaping up to be a great morning here. Some cloud still around after the snow-fest of yesterday; the resort is not reporting any fresh but I have some to report since writing yesterday. There's more than that in wind-swept places. Basically, lots of snow - we are doing well at the moment. A very cold start to the day too. Great stuff. Looks like there's going to be clearer skies rather than snow for the most part into next week now. As long as it keeps cold, should be good. • Nozawa Now: Wednesday 9th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this season 328cm Posted on Wednesday 9th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Oh yes. Some people may not like this kind of huge dumpage - I'll call them silly people - but I love it. It's one of those days when I am reporting numbers that are larger than the resort is posting - they are probably worried about scaring folk away. A bit of a blowing wind may also have something to do with that. Anyway, there's loads of snow around. I am measuring 48cm of fresh on the ground and that is the biggest number I have been able to report this season so far. The resort is reporting 50-54cm on the top areas. :) There may well be some delays in lift openings this morning, but I can't find any such info as I post this (8am). If you are keen to venture out in such conditions, be warned - visibility is looking very limited. The snow should be easing off later this afternoon. Tomorrow we are still expecting some sunshine, so it should be top notch conditions. If you are not able to be here, I guess you are perhaps just a little jealous! I'll try not to rub it in. ;) Fresh snowfall recorded by resort (since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1407m): 50cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 54cm - Hikage (660m): 45cm - Nagasaka (615m): 40cm - Karasawa (563m): 30cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by resort): - Yamabiko (1407m): 270cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 255cm - Hikage (660m): 155cm - Nagasaka (615m): 150cm - Karasawa (563m): 120cm All lifts apart from the following planned to be operating: - Kandahar pair - Mizunashi triple - Challenge pair - Utopia pair All courses open apart from the following planned to be open: - Kandahar West - Kandahar East - Grand Prix Nozawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Wednesday 9th January 2019 Total snowfall at base 328cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 22 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (9th January) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 202cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 124cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Snow storm. 30-40cm of fresh snow both seen and reported by some resorts around the area. There's more than that in places. Blown around by moderate to strong winds. Whiteout. It actually started off with pretty wet kind of snow last night but has turned into better quality stuff this cold morning. It's a day to sit out for most people. And if you decided to go out in this lot, you may find limited options as a fair few lifts are still not moving as of 9:15am and may well not get open today. Extra caution needed in this kind of weather. I'm going to sit it out - try to fight it with the snow blower at times - and wait until the sun shines tomorrow. That is going to be superb. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A very good morning to you from Hakuba. Now this is what we want. Heavy snowfall with some resorts reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall. I like the sound of that. First off, the headlines and what the ski resorts are reporting: Hakuba Cortina: 50cm (base); 50+cm (top) Hakuba Happo-one: 30cm (top of Riesen quad) Hakuba 47: 30-35cm Hakuba Goryu: 15-20cm Tsugaike: they don't give out numbers, but they are adding 50cm to the snow depth of top areas Some lifts may well be affected by the current conditions so I advise checking before going. The only thing I can find right now is that Cortina is only part open and some lifts affected at Tsugaike and Goryu. But others appear to be open. Limited visibility. Heavy snowfall. Extra care needed. Be careful out there. Tomorrow should be both calmer and clearer. In fact, perhaps a perfect day to be out on the slopes. • Madarao Now: Wednesday 9th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 362cm Weather overview Snow Wind Blowy Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Wednesday 9th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Heavy snow alert! Heavy, as in falling quickly and building up. Light, as in light and fluffy. That's what we like to hear! The resort is mentioning more than 60cm of snowfall on their social media this morning; the official resort report is saying 40cm, so not sure what's going on there. I am indeed measuring 60cm (plus or minus in a few different areas) - a bit of wind has made measuring rather difficult this morning. I think that is a fair representation of what we have got though. Madarao are also reporting a bit of congestion on the road coming up here and the likelihood of some delays with lifts opening as they cope with all this snow. Visibility is very limited too. So it's not everyone's idea of a great day to be on the slopes.... But it is one of the better kinds of problems to have to deal with! And tomorrow the sun should be out giving us a potentially amazing day. And I don't over-use such comments as you no doubt know. Hope some of you can be here to enjoy it. ----- The Madarao Kogen Fire Festival is on Saturday 12th January. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 9th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 531cm Posted on Wednesday 9th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 20cm to report to you this morning measured from just outside my top secret lair close to Hirafu base area. Pesky strong winds were messing with a few top lifts in the middle of the day yesterday. The good part of that is that today if everywhere is open - which seems to be the case at the start of the day - there should be some fine untracked snow up there to enjoy. For the first time in a while, forecasts don't show that much snow in the upcoming week. There might even be more sunny conditions than whiteout snowy ones. Some people will be happy with that. All was ask is for some regular top-ups in between the nice weather, and hopefully temps will remain low. Doesn't look like there's much to worry about on that score. Let's enjoying! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -7℃, light storm, 25cm snowfall in 24 hours. Moiwa 800m: -10.3℃, W13.7m/s, snowdrifts and cornices are developing. Mikaeri: no data. Hirafu peak: -14℃, N18m/s, 25cm snow in 24 hours with 50cm snowdrifts. Mizuno no sawa: -12.5℃, NNW5.5m/s. Kutchan weather station: -5.4℃, snow depth 138cm. Coastal data Benkei cape: N14m/s, Kamui cape N10m/s, 1013hPa, 2.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is getting steeper and mountains are in a stormy condition. The cornices have developed up to 100cm in 24hours, snowdrifts are drastically accumulating in leeward slopes. Cornices are very unstable and snowdrifts will crack very rapidly. The avalanche risk in leeward slopes above 800m is very high today. Peak gates will be closed. Do not cross ropes to step out of bounds. The snow in the tree runs under 800m is good, however it is strongly recommended not venture out too far from the ski resorts today. Stay out of strictly off limits areas.
