It was good to see the rain turn into snow yesterday during the day on the mountain, and Hakuba 47 were reporting 5cm of snow by mid-afternoon. It is definitely feeling colder and mostly cloudy (with a bit of light snow falling earlier on with a dusting on the ground). Some resorts are reporting a bit of fresh snow this morning - up to 2-3cm (Happo/47) and 5cm (Cortina). We're expecting sunshine during the day today and perhaps more tomorrow. Of course we all want to hear when the next decent snowfall is due. Looks towards Thursday and over the weekend for that. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday the weather was a bit mad once again. I am no fan of strong winds; there're just... annoying. The wind messed around with the lift operations on the mountain and checking out the evening news there was some silly warmth going on in Japan, particularly in the south. A mid season blip please. Up here in Niseko I am happy to report that this morning is much more pleasingly cold and somewhat calmer (though not exactly 'calm'), and there's 11cm of fresh snowfall. At the start of the day, just the Annupuri Gondola is not managing to get open and all other lifts appear to be planning on moving as planned. Hurray! There's regular snow on the forecast in the coming week so let's hope we can get back into a nice mid-winter (but strong wind blizzard-avoiding) pattern. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, 15cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -13°,W7.8m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri Weather Station: -12°, major snowdrift development, forestry road buried. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 220cm. Hirafu Peak: -16°, strong westerly wind, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -14.72°, 10cm new snow in last 24hrs, mountain base snow depth 157cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -5.5°, max wind 2am WNW16.4m/s, snow depth 39cm. Kutchan Weather Station:- 7.6°, WNW17.5m/s at midnight, snow depth 160cm. Cape Benkei: NW16m/s, Cape Kamui: W12m/s, pressure 1019hPa, wave 3.7m. A typical winter weather pattern continues and the mountain is experiencing blizzard conditions. From midnight the wind started to drop although it is still strong. Above 800m cornice and steep open leeward slopes, the avalanche risk continues from the Feb 4 low pressure snow layer. Especially above 1000m, snow drift stabilisation is delayed due to the low temperature and a deep fracture is possible from rider stimulation. If wind drops below 10m/s the snowdrifts will start to quickly consolidate and stabilise. Consider Osawa cornice and Backbowl sidewall dangerous today. Snow in the trees is good but a bit wind packed. There is the possibility of shallow surface avalanches easily occurring on 40 deg slopes. Avalanches often occur during or right after a storm. Do not stimulate cornices or knolls. Do not wait in the valley bottoms. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Is your beacon on? They are not compulsory but are recommended. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a warm morning and just below zero at -1c. It will get colder, rather than warmer, as the day rolls on. There is a respectable 8cm of new snow on the ground in the village. This is quite heavy reflecting the warm temperature at the moment. Visibility is okay but there is a moderate wind and the snow is coming in sideways. Light snowfalls are forecast to continue through the week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a bit... wet, this morning. Not rain, not quite powder snow either. Sleet I think is the word I'm looking for. Or wet snow. (I'm all worded-out after writing the below blurb). Anyway, it's not a particularly appealing morning with that falling and grey cloudy and foggy conditions. Hopefully things will improve during the day with temps due to drop again and hopefully some nicer snow falling. It looks like wind could be a factor again today too, possibly affecting lifts. And indeed, just as I prepare to post this report at 8:30am there is news of top lifts not opening. See individual resort details below for details and keep that in mind. --- A look back at the season so far: January 2019 The months just fly by don’t they. OK, enough of the clichés... it’s time to look back on the month of January and the 18/19 season so far. All the numbers that I am discussing here (apart from the JMA numbers at the end) can be found within these Niseko Now reports. See below and the ‘Snowfall Analysis’ page via that big blue tab link thingy up top. And, of course, please always keep in mind that I take my measurements from close to the base of Niseko Grand Hirafu. My numbers can all be compared like-for-like, because they are coming from the same places each season and I try my best to always be consistent. This is how much snowfall I have measured myself during the month of January over the last seven years: January 2019: 285cm January 2017: 305cm January 2016: 152cm January 2015: 303cm January 2014: 257cm January 2013: 461cm January 2012: 443cm In the end we didn’t quite manage to hit 3m snowfall at base, and about 20cm less than I observed in January last season. Still, 285cm is nearly double the now famously rubbish (calm down... I mean relatively!!) 16/17 season, but also not reaching the lofty numbers in 2012 and 2013. Monthly numbers don’t say anything about consistency and quality of course... One great thing has been that I was able to measure fresh cm of snowfall on all but 6 days through the month of January 2019. Adding that on to the 5 days without any new cm of snow measured in December 2018, it means there have only been 11 reports during the whole of December 2018 and January 2019 without any new cm of snow at base. Fresh snowfall recorded in 51 out of 62 reports. Impressive. :) So, Niseko is continuing to deliver some excellent consistency which is a good job because we need it (see comments last season about the real need for regular refreshes in such a popular destination). On to my ‘season to date’ numbers. These are from the beginning of the season to the end of January: 2018/2019 season up to end of January 2019: 702cm 2017/2018 season up to end of January 2018: 899cm 2016/2017 season up to end of January 2017: 445cm 2015/2016 season up to end of January 2016: 611cm 2014/2015 season up to end of January 2015: 806cm 2013/2014 season up to end of January 2014: 859cm 2012/2013 season up to end of January 2013: 979cm And here’s how much of the total snowfall for a season we have already had fall on us by the end of January in those recent seasons: By the end of January 2019, as a % of the season total: ??? By the end of January 2018, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2017, as a % of the season total: about 65% By the end of January 2016, as a % of the season total: about 62% By the end of January 2015, as a % of the season total: about 70% By the end of January 2014, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2012, as a % of the season total: about 66% By the end of the month of January, we have usually had between 62-74% of the total snowfall that we can expect over the entire season. (The average being 68%). Hopefully we’ll get at least 3m more snowfall this season, and obviously the more the better. Always want more snow. Looking ahead to February, here’s how much snowfall I have recorded during the month of in the last six winter seasons. The numbers in brackets show the total observed snowfall up until the end of February in each of the respective seasons. February 2018: 299cm (1198cm) February 2017: 160cm (605cm) February 2016: 266cm (877cm) February 2015: 196cm (1002cm) February 2014: 178cm (1037cm) February 2013: 316cm (1295cm) The last piece of data that I always look at is the snowfall numbers that the Japan Meteorological Agency report from their observation station in Kutchan town. Here is what they have reported for the month of January in recent years: January 2019: 253cm January 2018: 259cm January 2017: 160cm January 2016: 258cm January 2015: 230cm January 2014: 317cm January 2013: 268cm And the JMA numbers for the ‘season so far’: 2018/2019 season up to end of January 2019: 667cm 2017/2018 season up to end of January 2018: 752cm 2016/2017 season up to end of January 2017: 568cm 2015/2016 season up to end of January 2016: 488cm 2014/2015 season up to end of January 2015: 658cm 2013/2014 season up to end of January 2014: 674cm 2012/2013 season up to end of January 2013: 672cm The first part of February is still full on peak season and especially popular with visitors coming from overseas to stay and celebrate the Chinese New Year holidays. We hope to see a lot more of winter this month. Up here in Hokkaido we can surely be able to happily ignore all the songs called ‘sakura’ (cherry blossoms) and ‘sotsugyo’ (graduation) that pop up along with other mentions of spring for quite a while yet. We can perhaps start thinking about that this time next month. As I mentioned in a report a few days ago, I am still not even half way through my season of reports. The last lifts will be moving until early May, so there’s over three full months to go. Lots of . And toast of course. I hope you will spend it with me – even if you have already been and gone, or indeed even if you aren’t able to visit Niseko at all this season. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: 0°, 5cm new wet snow. Moiwa 800m: -1.0, E1.7m/s, 5cm light wet snow, foggy. Mikaeri Weather Station: light winds, 5cm new snow, minor snowdrift development from the east. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 220cm. Hirafu Peak: -5°, strong southerly wind. Mizuno no Sawa Knoll : -2.37°, S5.2m/s, mountain base snow depth 151cm. Suttsu Weather Station: 2.0°, SSE4.7m/s, snow depth 42cm. Kutchan Weather Station: 0.8°, S2.3m/s, snow depth 151cm. Cape Benkei: S3m/s, Cape Kamui: NE4m/s, pressure 995hPa, wave 0.5m. Preceding a low pressure front the atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and weather is calm. Above 1000m a strong southerly wind is blowing. From this mornings observation the avalanche risk is low, however after 10am expect the avalanche risk to increase rapidly on leeward steep slopes around 1000m. The current snowfall (Feb3-4) is expected to become a future avalanche fracture face. Take care if we get increased falls of low pressure snow, slabs will form that fracture and slide easily, even in the trees. When we have a typical winter weather pattern and increased snowfall forming slabs, avalanche accidents can easily occur. A slope you were riding yesterday may not be safe today. Make flexible plans to suit the weather. Hindsight is 20/20 but wont help the dead. Beacons and airbags are no guarantee of safety. Always make cautious decisions. Snow in the trees is good but visibility is bad. Be careful of a sudden change in weather, falling, hitting things, collisions. Is your beacon on? Good weather is always safer in the mountains. Some very light snow in the morning and a bit of blue sky in the afternoon. So it was a day of mixed weather. This morning starts off cloudy with breaks in the clouds expected. As with most regions of Japan we are expecting some warmer conditions over the next day or so but hopefully we'll soon be back to snow early week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here All clear blue skies this morning. Hurray! It's keeping pretty cold early on and it is no surprise that a lot of people are lining up waiting for the first lifts of the day to take them to all that lovely snow on the mountain. We should be 'all open' today after a few days of lift disruption. A lot of folk are coming to enjoy their Chinese New Year holidays here in Niseko at the moment. Today is a fine day to be arriving! I will post my excite look back at January in the report tomorrow. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -4°, no new snow in the last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -5.9, W6.5m/s, cornice development settled. Mikaeri Weather Station: snowdrift development, calm. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 2105cm. Hirafu Peak: -10°. Mizuno no Sawa: -8.73°, no new snow in last 12 hrs, snow depth 157cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -0.9°, snow depth 44cm. Kutchan Weather Station: -2.0°, snow depth 158cm. Cape Benkei: NW12m/s, Cape Kamui: W10m/s, pressure 1008hPa, wave 2.3m. The isobars have moved further apart and the sea and mountains are calm. Leeward snow drifts development is stable, on impact there is no obvious weak layer. From observation the general avalanche risk is low. Cornice growth has been massive (bus size), no room for a careless attitude under one of them. If they collapse, giant block avalanche will occur. Do not traverse under or on top of cornices, this could trigger a surface avalanche and with so many people in the valley bottom a serious accident could happen. Osawa cornice face and Kozan no Sawa 1000m line, avalanche risk is hard to predict. Better not to ride there. Snow conditions are good everywhere. Is your beacon switched on? Niseko respects your freedom to ride outside the resort areas, but has a serious interest in your safety. Please listen to the patrol's advice before going through the gates. Do not stay at the bottom of the valley. Lovely weather early on this morning. It is going to be a fine day. So, this is the weekend that is going to get all warm and toasty. It's pretty cold this morning and should be mild during the day. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba. Another 6cm of snow this morning and the clouds have been clearing - looks like it is going to be a fine day. Pretty mild conditions expected, with some very mild conditions forecast for tomorrow. Hoping not too much but it does look like we're going to have something of a warm period before we get more snow in the coming week. Both the Naeba gondolas and the Dragondola are open. It's going to be a busy weekend and nice conditions early on. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Winds were severe overnight and continued for hours. For now the wind seems to have passed by and left a pretty nice morning. Above there is blue sky mixed with cloud. The sun is out and is warming the village. There is a huge wind affect on the slopes from the wind. The 5cm of fresh snow on the ground is a mix of new snow and wind blown from roofs etc. With that sun and fresh snow and the absence of wind it is going to be a great morning. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . My many apologies for the missed reports over the last few days. It could not be avoided. I am hoping that I really will be able to get back to normal from now. Will do my best. For now I have gone back and added the snowfall for the days that we had it. Anyway, just was just a bit of snow over the last few days but this morning there was a good 18cm of fresh. Still some moderate wind blowing around so we are all hoping for that to ease off quickly... but might need to have a few more windy condition days before we can hope for that. Not much snow on the forecast either for the next few days and as with many other regions of Japan tomorrow is looking set to be unseasonably warm. There is even a chance of rain, even up here. Here's hoping we can avoid that. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Cloudy at the beginning of the day but it has been improving and like neighbouring regions we are seeing increasing clearer skies and sunshine - perhaps we'll more of it as the day goes on. Definitely much calmer. No fresh snow being reported by resorts. But I measured some - since my report yesterday, so that is what is recorded here. (Why do ski resorts here seem to just ignore snow that falls in the daytime. An ongoing frustration; let's move on!) OK so, tomorrow. Sunshine. That's nice. Warmer conditions. Not so. Some forecasts have some rain even up here in Shiga Kogen. I am hoping we will avoid that. The good news in all that is that it should be snowing once again early in the week. So generally fine weather due during the day today and tomorrow. Hope some of you can enjoy it.
