The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. It's cold. But there is a bit of sun due today but perhaps some sprinkling of snow too with more coming on tomorrow. Zao is really rather busy at the moment; there have been some long queues at times, especially for the Ropeway up to the top of the mountain. Cunning planning recommended (and a good talk with your accommodation on the best strategy). I would say an early start is always a good idea. Lots of visitors from overseas too and of course that has been especially so this week with the Chinese New Year holidays. We are also in the middle of the long 3-day weekend, with tomorrow being a national holiday. Lots of fresh snow - 30-40cm of it being reported by the resort at least that lower number down below being measured by myself. Nice. And it's still snowing (though just cloud seems to be what is on the forecast for later in the day). It is keeping cold, currently -4C down at base and -10C up top so wrap up well before heading out. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan and so it will be busier than a normal Monday. It seems we might be enjoying a bit of sunshine in the morning. And here are your headlines for the day: Hakuba Cortina: 20cm (base); 20cm (top) Hakuba Norikura: 20cm Hakuba Happo-one: 5cm (top of Riesen) Hakuba 47: 5-10cm Hakuba Goryu: 5-10cm I was up at 47 yesterday afternoon and it was snowing lightly. Quite busy but found some fine pockets of powder that were untouched. I think we were kind of expecting a bit more overnight. Sounds like there was a bit of wind blowing snow around, perhaps that goes some way to explaining different numbers. Or perhaps there was just more in the northern areas (Cortina and Norikura) as is sometimes the case. I think that some serious hands on investigation might be required, because I feel there's going to be more out there. Someone has to do it, so go on... I volunteer! Light snow falling at the moment in places, but also some sun shining through clouds in places too so a mixed bag of conditions early on. There's snow potential on the forecast over the coming week, the first decent amount due perhaps overnight tomorrow night. But in the meantime it should be a good morning. I will see you tomorrow. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -12°, 5cm new snow in the last 12hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.7°, W6.4m/s, minor cornice and snowdrift development, good visibility. Mikaeri Weather Station: snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 230cm, 1150m: -16°. Mizuno no Sawa: -15.85°, NNW6m/s, 11cm new snow in last 24hrs. Hirafu Peak: -18°, NNW10/ms, good visibility. Kutchan Weather Station:- 14.3°, ENE0.8m/s, snow depth 182cm. Cape Benkei: N9m/s, Cape Kamui: N3m/s, pressure 1021hPa, wave 0.8m. Currently light winds of about 10m/s with no significant snow drift development, even above 800m. Snow fall is less than 20cm in the last 24hrs and from observation the avalanche risk is low. Cornice development from dawn is easily fracturing, be careful on cornice slopes. The snow above 800m is mostly reset and all gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before going out the gates. Outside the gates is not the ski resort, following other's tracks can lead you astray, always know your current position. There was an accident on the north slope of Higashi One yesterday, ski patrol and the Kutchan Fire Department were involved in the rescue. Hirafu Patrol would like to convey their appreciation to the Fire Department for their assistance. Avalanches are not the only danger in the winter mountains, many other hazards exist outside the ski resorts. Always take cautious actions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another extremely cold morning up here in Hokkaido and snow continues to fall. And I have another 18cm of fresh to add to my report. That number doesn't convey the quality of the snow, which is really nice dry powder. Good quality consistent snowfall. Lovely. And wind does not feel like it is going to be naughty and causing issues with lift operations today. The lines are long for the first lifts this morning. Monday is National Foundation Day in Japan. Here's a bit of background "National Foundation Day was first held in 1967 as a day to reflect on the establishment of the nation and to nurture a love for the country. From 1872 to 1948, February 11 was known as Kigen-setsu, a holiday commemorating the day on which—according to the Nihon Shoki—Emperor Jimmu is said to have acceded the throne in 660 BCE". So now you know. It means that it's a 3-day long weekend for many in Japan and traditionally one of the more popular weekends for a ski trip in peak season. --- Also this weekend, the last chance to check out the famous Sapporo Snow Festival which runs through until Monday. This year it has been the 70th year of the festival, held over three areas in the city - the Odori Site, Susukino Site and Tsudome Site. I hear that some people visiting yesterday were themselves turning into ice sculptures, it was so cold. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -15℃, 10cm snowfall in 12h, calm. Moiwa800m: -15.1℃, WSW1.7m/s, light development of snowdrifts. Mikaeri junction: -15℃, light snowdrift. Annupuri 1120m snow depth 230cm. Hirafu peak: -16℃, some gusts blowing at 800m elevation. Mizuno no sawa: no data. Suttsu weather station: -7.2℃, WNW3.1m/s, 59cm snow depth. Kutchan: -15.7℃, ENE2.0m/s, 181cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NW15m/s, Kamui cape: WSW9m/s, 1018hPa, 1.8m waves. 15+m/s storm have passed and the snowdrifts are stabilizing. The overall avalanche risk is lowering, however slides caused by falling cornices are still to be considered. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions and be prepared for the backcountry before stepping out of the gates. The snow much faster than yesterday. Beware of hitting trees. Many cracks are starting to form in various places, but are difficult to see from above. Be careful in steep open faces and knoll terrains. Is your beacon switched on? Do you have a shovel and a probe? Wearing a helmet is highly recommended. There is no 100% safety in the mountains. Be always prudent. Cold temps continues. Temperatures are much lower, it is noticeably much colder and there's some fresh snow. Not large amounts - both Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu are reporting 5cm. Hopefully more over the weekend for the many visitors to enjoy. Earlier snowfall has eased off now and it's actually fairly bright here in the Maruike area. Come back snow, we want more of you! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning. Ahhh, fresh snow. We all love it, don't we. And we always want more. With the warmer conditions over the last week and some wet as well we have been looking forward to seeing some more fresh on the ground, and this morning we have some. Just 2-5cm as being reported by the resort so far and I can report a similar number and it is snowing right now. I am happy to also report colder conditions too. So it feels like we are back to winter. Let's hope it will stay that way and the fairly regular snow on the forecast in the week ahead delivers. It's another long weekend here in Japan because Monday is a national holiday. Expect Nozawa to be busy!
