- Niseko Now: Sunday 24th March 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 937cm Posted on Sunday 24th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning. And what excellent news I have for you this morning. 18cm of fresh snow to be measured on the ground here at base (total from measurement taken yesterday evening and this morning), with probably more higher up. Can't say I was totally expecting that! But conditions should be great for anyone lucky enough to be here just now. And that includes me. Lifts appear to be opening as planned. I've had my early toast and I'm going to get out there. I would never utter words like 'Powder Paradise' (complete with capital letters) myself, but it does feel like winter again and I am jolly excited. Late March is trying to make up and give us a nice last taste of winter. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, 25cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -8.2°, NNW6.18m/s, 30cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -11.1°, W5.90m/s, snow depth 250cm. Hirafu 1000m: -10.6°, ESE3.50m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: -4.9°, snow depth 101cm, SSW0.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW14m/s. Kamui Cape: W9m/s, pressure 1005hPa, wave 0.9m. Following the passing of a low pressure system there has been snowdrift and cornice development above 800m due to the wind and snowfall. From observation, cornices are collapsing and snowdrifts fracturing easily. The morning avalanche risk is a little high. There is the possibility of surface avalanches, depth up to 45cm, around 1000m elev in Osawa, Kozan no sawa on SE facing steep slopes and knolls. Take care. Gate openings not yet decided. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Do not duck ropes. Snow in the forest is good but is also light so you are still hitting the bottom. Cracks are hidden by the new snow. Be careful. Avalanches follow the valley bottoms, do not spend time in them. Niseko is back to Powder Paradise. Have a good day. --- Ski resort operation information: Sunday 24th March 2019 Subject to change due to weather conditions Niseko Grand Hirafu Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 330cm - Base: 120cm Ski lifts operation news: - Ace Number 1 pair, King Number 2 quad and Ace Number 4 pair lift closed - Plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Plans to be open until Sunday 31st March 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 229cm - Base: 170cm Ski lifts operation news: - All lifts open - Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April ----- Niseko Annupuri Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 280cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operation news: - Jumbo Number 3 pair lift closed - Plans to be open until Monday 6th May ----- Niseko Village Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 280cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operation news: - Community Chair and Morino Chair closed - Country Road Chair open - Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April Niseko Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Sunday 24th March 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 937cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 87 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 84cm reported on 8 days December 2018 snowfall 333cm reported on 26 days January 2019 snowfall 285cm reported on 25 days February 2019 snowfall 198cm reported on 20 days March 2019 snowfall 37cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning and good news! Yes, there's some fresh snow on the ground this morning. I have 4cm of it to report to you and I am hearing possibly close to 10cm on higher areas. That is very good to hear and there will be a race to the top from the people still around (including more folk who have been working for the winter with a bit more time on their hands). Feels cold too this morning. The early light snow easing off and there's some sunshine at the moment. Looks like changeable weather today and tomorrow with warmer conditions due once again early in the upcoming week. Anyway, have a good Saturday! I'm going to go check out this new snow. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -7℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -9℃, WSW1.9m/s, 5cm snowfall, snowdrifts developed during the night. A strong cold air inflow with a westerly wind picking up overnight made snowdrifts develop drastically above 800m elevation. 40cm thick surface slab avalanches are to be expected in Osawa and Backbowl SE aspects, leeward knolls and cornice slopes during the morning. Similar hazardous conditions are present in surrounding mountains. Beware. A decent layer of fresh snow has blanketed the tree-runs, however still not quite bottomless powder conditions. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. More good news this morning with some more fresh snow on the ground. Early morning a bit of snow yesterday but generally it was fine weather during the day yesterday, with 2cm added to the report. Quite a lot of cloud about this morning but some blue sky and the sun peeking through at times. Not much else to report really this morning as things are generally calm... - Niseko Now: Sunday 17th March 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 915cm Posted on Sunday 17th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Fresh snow! The report below is reporting 5-10cm in different areas and I can add 6cm to my observed snowfall. Hurray! And there's lovely blue skies above us too at the start of the day. Early tracks should be best before the sun gets to it and warms things up to low positive numbers. I wonder if there might be 10+cm up top... More sunshine is expected tomorrow too. --- Country Road Chair lift at Niseko Village fans. Yes, it's open now. Bit lazy that lift, isn't it, but let's hope it can have something of a spring workout... --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -2°, 3cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -5.5°, NW5.10m/s, 5cm new snow. Mikaeri Junction: 10cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -8.3°, NNW4.40m/s, snow depth 250cm. Hirafu 1000m: -7.8°, NW5.4m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: 7.2°, snow depth 119cm, WNW1.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNE7m/s. Kamui Cape: light winds, pressure 1015hPa, wave 0.7m. The mountain is covered with fresh snow again. Above 800m in leeward forested areas there is 10-15cm of soft snowdrift development. The snow quality will deteriorate as the day warms but early on the snow will be good. Be careful of old tracks and hidden objects under the snow. From observation the general avalanche risk is low, however on open steep slopes and knolls, shallow avalanches will easily occur, take care. To avoid getting caught in a full depth avalanche do not spend time in the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural occurrence and only become an accident if people are involved. Have a good day. --- Ski resort operation information: Sunday 17th March 2019 Subject to change due to weather conditions Niseko Grand Hirafu Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 340cm - Base: 130cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day (Ace Number 1 pair and King Number 2 quad rested) - The Ace Family quad (until 8:30pm), Ace Center 4 quad (8:20pm), Hirafu Gondola (until 8:10pm) and Holiday Number 1 pair (until 8:30pm) lifts are normally open during the evening ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 244cm - Base: 175cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day - The Hanazono lifts are normally currently open until 4:20pm ----- Niseko Annupuri Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day - The Jumbo 1 lift is normally open until 8:30pm during the evening ----- Niseko Village Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day.
