- Hakuba Now: Thursday 14th March 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 381cm Posted on Thursday 14th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Breaking News! Your snow headlines: Hakuba Goryu: 30cm (Toomi), 60cm (top) Hakuba 47: 40-50cm (top) Hold on a moment. What's the date again? 60cm of fresh snow on Goryu?!? 40-50cm at 47? Couldn't we have had more of this kind of snow back in January? There's some decent snow on the ground down to village too. Great to see the ground all white again. Even so, I would imagine people want to head high for that lovely deepness. Unfortunately at the start of the day some top lifts aren't moving around the valley due to strong winds. I recommend contacting resorts for the latest there. And what a day for Facebook to be 'down' and thereby cutting off lots of official resort information. It is limiting what I can report to you unfortunately - nothing I can do about that. (Any lessons learnt there, ski resorts? Why not put the information on your own websites at least as well as on Facebook, ok? I can never understand why they put their information on someone else's website and not their own, no matter how popular said other website is). Anyway, obviously there's no complaints about fresh snow, so let's just enjoy it. There is lot to enjoy this morning! ----- Hakuba Happo-one Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 275cm - Usagidaira: 230cm - Nakiyama: 60cm Notes: - Nakiyama Wall and North area are now closed due to insufficient snow - Top lifts on hold at the start of the day due to weather - There are some restrictions on Shirakaba areas - Urakuro and Omusubi areas closed ----- Hakuba Goryu Official snow depth: - Top: 280cm - Toomi: 140cm - Iimori: 85cm Notes: - All courses open apart from Snow Diving and Adventure, both now closed for the season ----- Hakuba 47 Official snow depth: - Top: 270cm - Base: 105cm Notes: - All courses are open - Generally the Line D pair lift operates when the gondola is not operating ----- Tsugaike Kogen Official snow depth: - Tsuga-no-mori: 310cm - Han-no-ki: 275cm - Maruyama: 90cm - Shirakaba: 240cm - Champion: 130cm - Oya-no-hara: 100cm - Kane-no-naru-oka: 95cm Notes: - Tsugaike Ropeway is now open for spring operations - But top lifts on hold at the start of today due to weather conditions - All courses are open ----- Hakuba Cortina Official snow depth: - Top: 235cm - Base: 125cm Notes: - All lifts apart from Number 5 are operating - Mt Hieda, Itadaira, Ipponmatsu, Rabbit, Warabi open at time of writing ----- Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Official snow depth: - Mountain Side: 150cm - Village Side: 40cm Notes: - Village Side is part open; Mountain Side is mostly open ----- Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: - 130cm Notes: - Most lifts and most courses are open ----- Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Official snow depth: - 145cm Notes: - All lifts apart from 8 and 10 are operating - Most courses are open ----- Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: - Top: 60cm - Base: 40cm Notes: - All lifts are operating ----- Night time skiing (nighta) at resorts in the region - weather & conditions permitting The below 'nighta' information will not be updated every day - please check with resorts if you plan to go! And that's about it really; maybe a little bit more snow at times over the coming few days. Just a bit. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am: -1.5℃, light snowfall. Moiwa800m: -3.9℃, NE1.02m/s, 5cm snowfall, no snowdrift developments. Annupuri 1100m: -6.5℃, E0.8m/s, 250cm snow depth. Hirafu1000m: -6.3℃, SSW2.0m/s, light snowfall. Kutchan weather station: -0.6℃, NE0.9m/s, 116cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNE3m/s, Kamui cape: E3m/s, 1004hPa, 0.6m waves. Calm wind with some light snowfall. The tracks have been buried. The overall snowfall is below average and the snowpack is shallower than usual, however the temperature remained low above 800m and thaw are yet to reach the higher slopes. The snow melt is progressing at the base of the mountain. Beware of small glide avalanches in gullies below 700m elevation, and always stay away from large valley bottoms (namely Osawa and Back bowl) in order to avoid large scale glide avalanches. Cornices can collapse far from the edge, better not stand anywhere on top. Beware of cracks. It is strongly recommended to carry a thin rope in your backpack as they would come in handy when in need. Carabiners and harnesses are not a necessity. The mountain is shifting into Spring, however snowfall are still expected. Seek for ski patrol’s advices before stepping out of the gates and be ready for sudden weather changes. A bit more heavy and wet quality snow yesterday since my report but it all feels very different this morning. We might be on for some more fresh snowfall tomorrow. I'd like that. And perhaps over the weekend too. So it doesn't look like we are done with snow just yet. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 901cm Posted on Tuesday 12th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Fresh snow this morning! I can just about report 1cm of snow in the report today. And there may well be double - double!!!! - that higher up. ;) There is a lot of cloud this morning but some blue sky too. All lifts are go. Gate openings not clear yet. Have a good one! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain Base 6.00am: -0°, 2cm wet new snow. Moiwa 800m: -2.3°, N6.08m/s, 5cm new snow, 15-30cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -4.9°, NW3.9m/s, snow depth 250cm. Hirafu Peak: -5°, strong winds, 1000m: -4.7°, E4.3m/s. Kutchan Weather Station: 0.8°, snow depth 117cm, NW4.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW9m/s. Kamui Cape: WNW5m/s, pressure 1000hPa,wave 0.7m. From observation, some areas of steep slopes above 900m in Kozan no sawa, Osawa and Higashi One have formed a 10cm hard slab with crust that is breaking away easily over large areas by rider stimulation. Although the thickness of snow breaking away from Mar 11 layer is not great, the large areas breaking away will cause a significant avalanche. There is 15cm of new snow deposited on forested leeward slopes in some areas. Although the lower mountain is in springtime the upper mountain is still in winter. Another low pressure system is approaching and will bring more snow. During periods of strong wind and snowfall do not enter leeward slopes. When rapid snowdrift growth exceeds 40cm avalanches can easily occur. Gate opening is yet to be decided and is dependant on lift operation. Please respect the patrols decisions. Above 800m the snow depth isn’t shrinking. Make cautious decisions to suit the weather. --- Ski resort operation information: Tuesday 12th March 2019 Subject to change due to weather conditions Niseko Grand Hirafu Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 320cm - Base: 120cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day (Ace Number 1 pair and King Number 2 quad rested) - The Ace Family quad (until 8:30pm), Ace Center 4 quad (8:20pm), Hirafu Gondola (until 8:10pm) and Holiday Number 1 pair (until 8:30pm) lifts are normally open during the evening ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 225cm - Base: 165cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day - The Hanazono lifts are normally currently open until 4:20pm ----- Niseko Annupuri Plans to be open until Monday 6th May 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day - The Jumbo 1 lift is normally open until 8:30pm during the evening ----- Niseko Village Plans to be open until Sunday 7th April 2019 Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 290cm - Base: 100cm Ski lifts operating: - All lifts opening as normal at the start of the day (Country Road Chair rested) - The Upper Village Gondola, Village Express and Banzai Chair lifts are normally open until 8:00pm during the evening Niseko Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Tuesday 12th March 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 901cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 80 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 84cm reported on 8 days December 2018 snowfall 333cm reported on 26 days January 2019 snowfall 285cm reported on 25 days February 2019 snowfall 198cm reported on 20 days March 2019 snowfall 1cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It might be raining down in the valley and on the route up to Shiga Kogen but as you get up past Sun Valley and higher... it is snowing. Both Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama are this morning 10cm of fresh snowfall this morning (and I agree). A bit wet at base and better quality up top (according to Yakebitaiyama). Sounds like some checking is required. We should be getting a bit of snow at times over the coming week. It's hard to believe it is already 8 years since that gigantic Tohoku earthquake event.
