The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There is some early low cloud around some base areas but up top the sun is out and there's blue skies. It's going to be a beautiful morning. Snow continued yesterday with the resort reporting 15-20cm of snow since the morning on the top areas of the mountain. Again, a more modest showing down below, but conditions on the open courses should be really good this morning. There is more sun and cloud forecast through today and tomorrow and lets hope that temps don't rise too much. Keep cold please. Beyond that, snow is lined up on the forecast from Tuesday onwards so we should be seeing a very good end to the year and a full-on start of 2020. Lots of people around now with many arriving for the New Year holidays. I'm very happy that they can get to enjoy this fresh snow. And now, time for me to get up there! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I measured 12cm of lovely looking light snow outside my place this morning and so another nice layer out there. From the look of the webcams it seems there is a mix of visibility conditions but finer conditions are forecast so we might get some good sunshine today. I have a bad cold at the moment and need to roll up into a ball and take a rest, so today it is another rather short report for which I apologise. I'll be back to normal service soon. If you can get out there to enjoy yourself, have fun! (PS Looks like the ever-lazy Country Road lift at Niseko Village is moving from today). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain Base 6.00am: -6°, 5cm of new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: NW 8.08m/s, -9.3°. Hanazono 700m:NW 7.70m/s, -9.3°.Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW12m/s. Kamui Cape W7m/s, 1027hPa, wave 1.7m. Hirafu 1000m: -14.1°. We are currently in a high pressure zone, wind above 800m is a little strong and snowdrifts are slowly developing. On steep leeward slopes above the tree line cracks are easily breaking away from rider stimulation. Take care around cornices and knolls. Avalanche risk will be moderately high throughout the day. Do not carelessly cut snowdrift slopes on Iwaonupuri or Nitonupuri. The sasa is still not covered and riding out of the ski areas is still not possible. Do not duck the ropes to ride out of bounds, if an accident occurs your rescue will be extremely difficult and painful for you and everyone else involved. The groomers are fantastic . Please follow the rules. And this morning more of the Shiga Kogen areas are opening up now that we have more snow. Okushiga Kogen is open from both bases and I notice that Hoppo-Bunadaira is also now open. It's still limited and not fully inter-connected though, so keep that in mind. The fresh snowfall though will definitely have improved conditions for this morning. Good thing, too, because we did get some thoughtful comments from people saying that, for example, Seki Onsen could not possibly have had the 50cm it reported, and that the resort shouldn't even have opened at all! And some resorts do add more than really seems likely, so keep it in mind in the early season. Once we get a good base, it doesn't really matter much until spring. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good news everyone! And as I am sure many are saying this morning ---- this is so much more like it! 'It' being what we expect in Nozawa, I suppose. Yesterday afternoon, the resort was reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall on the upper slopes, and this morning they are adding 35cm. So I make that 55cm of snowfall on the upper areas since yesterday morning. A more modest amount down at base - in the afternoon they were reporting 2cm and this morning no official number yet. But I am going to provisionally add 20cm to my report (but I am going to go out and check that in a few places, so I may update it). Whatever, a very good new layer and conditions should be well worth checking out this morning up there. As far as I can tell, resort operations (lifts and courses) remains the same as yesterday for the moment. We might not get any further snow for a few days, but the snow is due back in time for New Years Eve and beyond. The Opening Festival for the season will take places on the upper Yamabiko area. If the free food and drink that is promised is not enough to tempt you, how about the chance to meet your favourite bright green vegetable that likes to ski - 'Nasuki'? Chance! The snowfall has eased off and there is actually a fair bit of blue sky around now, which lots of cloud lingers around upper mountain areas. It is a lovely morning to go out and enjoy the fresh snowfall. (If you are feeling better than I am!). Hakuba Norikura and Hakuba Cortina are now both part open and more of Happo-one is opening this morning as they get their Skyline Number 1 lift and Nakiyama Number 3 lifts moving - though you still need to get lifts back down to base. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was snowing in the afternoon yesterday when I went out and I thought I'd have more than the slightly over 6cm that I am measuring at my point this morning. Expect more than that on those higher elevations. The last day of the month and the first run of days in January is still looking exciting for the chance of heavy snowfall. I'm not actually feeling 100% this morning, so forgive my on-the-short-side report. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8℃, calm and 10cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -9.8℃, SSW1.47m/s, light development of snowdrifts. Hirafu 1000m: -9.8℃. Hanazono 720m: -10.4℃, N4.2m/s. Benkei cape: N8m/s. Kamui cape: NE3m/s, 1020hPa, 1.4m waves. The isobars are spread out and the development of cornices and snowdrifts above 800m elevation has come to an end. The avalanche hazard is lowering in alpine area. Snowfall amount is still small. The “Sasa” bamboo and “Taranbo” spiky bush are yet to be buried. You may rip your outerwear or scratch your goggles/face by pushing too far in the bushes under 700m elevation. Out of bounds access from the ski resort is still not possible. Do not cross boundary ropes. We strongly demand everyone to respect the Niseko Rules. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended to avoid fatal collisions. Please have a great day.
