This morning Happo-one is reporting 20cm of fresh up on the Kurobishi area with 10cm on the lower Nakiyama courses; Cortina are reporting 5-10cm and 47 are reporting up to 15cm on upper slopes. So that should give you an idea of how much snow to expect on the mountain this morning and there's snow on the ground too in the village and at base areas as it continues to snow. Not as cold this morning but still cold and hopefully we'll get more snow through into tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There were some very, very cold temperatures being reported yesterday - throughout Japan, it seems, but particularly up here in Hokkaido. I might not like the cold for a few moments before I get up in a morning, but once I'm up and had some toast I like it at all other times. It's one reason why we enjoy such lovely snow up here. Some people who visit are certainly shocked though... so do come prepared! This morning I have 10cm to add to my report from here close to Hirafu base, from yesterday and a little overnight - not enough for a total reset but still, I would expect some good conditions to enjoy this morning. We have some varied weather conditions early morning with lots of cloud over on our mountain side, and some blue sky and sunshine over in other directions. Actually, there is more sun shining through over here since I started putting this report together and some blue to be seen through the thin clouds. (Might it be clearing up, I wonder... we are expecting more snow, so maybe not.) Hopefully we will be on the receiving end of more snow over the next few days. I hope that you have a good Saturday. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -8.9°, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs, light NW winds. Moiwa 800m: N16deg 4.8m/s , -12.2°, minor snowdrift development. Yu no Sawa 1000m: N 16deg 5.1m/s, -15.0°. Niseko Village 900m:NNE 343deg 5.1m/s, -14.1°. Hirafu 1000m : NNE 343deg (speed:no data) , -15.1°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 333deg 3.8m/s, -12.4°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNE8m/s. Kamui Cape N8m/s, 1016hPa, wave 1.4m. The winter type pressure pattern continues bringing cold air into the area. Above 800m a northerly wind is fluctuating around 10m/s with minor snowdrift and cornice development. The mountain has generally been reset by 15-20cm snowdrifts. General avalanche risk is low and all gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before going out the gates. The snow is good on and off-piste. Take care though. A 20m/s wind can build heavy snowdrifts on leeward slopes in a very short time. The stronger the storm the faster this happens, making a dangerous situation very quickly. Many accidents happen in these conditions. Think before you enter a leeward valley during a blizzard too avoid the storm. Do not wait around on steep slopes or valley floors. Our decisions are always being questioned in the winter mountains. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good news. Snow! What we all love and need. And we have got a decent amount yesterday. The resort doesn't shout about these things but hidden away on their site is them saying that the mountain got 10-30cm of fresh snowfall yesterday... with all courses now open. Wind has been blowing it around and I expect there to be varying amounts depending on where you look, but there's a decent increase in snow on the ground at base since my report on Wednesday. The official snow depth numbers aren't huge (yet) but have been increasing and snow cover is definitely improved. The mountain is in the best shape of the season so far. This morning there's cloud around but the sun is breaking through in places too. It is keeping cold. Nighta in the Yokokura area begins - at last -from tonight and is due to be happening on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday. The Number 1 pair lift will be operating. After the stormy weather, it's sunny this morning and I think it's safe to say it will likely be the best morning of the season so far. The resort is reporting over 40cm of fresh snowfall on the upper areas of the resort since yesterday morning - 25cm of that is overnight, the rest during the day yesterday. Marvellous. I'm almost giddy with excitement looking out at the mountain. The Number 13 single lift, affectionately known as 'pizza box' (or 'the tray' and possible other names) should be moving this morning for some fun who--ah!! moments. Luckily it's not windy. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have 14cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning - I have had to up that since an hour ago - as it is coming down quite heavily at the moment which will be affecting visibility at the start of the day. Still, as you might expect there are quite a few people ready and lined up for those first lifts, ready to check out the snow. And more snowfall is on the way over the coming days. All good! I think that's it for this morning. Take care and have fun. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -7°, 20cm new snow in last 24hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: NNW 332deg 8.0m/s (10min average), -9.8°, minor snowdrift development. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WSW 253deg 3.6m/s, -12.8°. Niseko Village 900m:WNW 3.0m/s, -11.9°. Hirafu 1000m : NNE 42deg (speed:no data) , -13.0°. Hanazono: NNW 328deg m/s, -9.8°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW16m/s. Kamui Cape W12m/s, 1021hPa, wave 2.0m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 170cm. The atmospheric pressure gradient has mellowed, although winds are gusty above 800m, there has been no significant snowdrift development and 20-30cm new snow has fallen. Today will be good. Peak gates are expected to be open. Be prepared before going out of bounds. To avoid avalanche risks when riding, do not traverse cornice slopes or under knolls. You may stimulate a deep layer and trigger an avalanche. Annupuri Gondola side gate No 8 Gate will open today. Moiwa Gate No. 10 open today, watch out for the cliffs at the bottom. Please follow the patrol instructions. Do not duck ropes. Over 1000 people went out the gates yesterday and thankfully no accidents were reported. It is appreciated people are reading and thinking about the avalanche information and following the Niseko Rules. Watch out for falling into holes and hitting trees. It is strongly recommended to wear a helmet. Is your beacon on?
