  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 11th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 45cm Snowfall at base this season 640cm Posted on Tuesday 11th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We beat the Niigata Meteorological Agency's forecast by a healthy five cm this morning, adding a bit more and getting us to a more reasonable two-meters-plus snowpack here at the base. Still not what we'd normally see, but I'm not complaining.... Should be a great day for those heading up today (and sorry to be late; my computer and I need to resolve some startup issues in our relationship). • Niseko Now: Tuesday 11th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 585cm Posted on Tuesday 11th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have a (just about) 1cm dusting of snow to report this morning from base. It is cloudy but there's some blue sky as well over on this side - Mt Yotei currently has some thick grey cloud over the top third. Feels fairly calm too so all lifts should be opening as planned from the start of the day. After this spell of some very cold conditions, somewhat milder temperatures are likely in the coming days - probably from tomorrow through Friday - but hopefully we will see a return to the cold come the weekend. Today is a national holiday in Japan. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6.1℃, 3cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: N354°9.7m/s, -8.4℃, 5cm snowfall, 15cm snowdrifts. Yu no sawa1000m: N354°6.7m/s, -10.9℃. Niseko Village 900m: NNW351°3.0m/s, -10.2℃. Hirafu 1000m: NNW329°speed n/a, -10.9℃. Hanazono 720m: NNW324°6.4m/s, -8.6℃. Benkei cape: N9m/s, Kamui cape: N9m/s, 1022hPa, 2.3m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth 170cm. The isobars got a little tight for some time and made a northerly wind pick up and developing cornices. Snowfall is scarce and no drastic development of snowdrifts can be found in leeward slopes. The general avalanche risk is low today. All peak gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Be prepared before going out of bounds. Old tracks remain throughout the mountain. Beware of collapsing cornices and obstacles under the surface. Better wear a helmet. The Niseko Rules applies to any person and there should be no exceptions or special cases. Regarding what happened at Gate 6 yesterday, we’d first like to apologize to the guests who were treated unfairly. Second, the Avalanche Institute, responsible for the mountain safety within the all mountain committee, severely alerts the resort management members that forcefully requested a special treatment to the ski patrol at the gate. The impartial application of the Niseko Rules for the past 20 years reduced the number of accidents and as a result took a key role in the current prosperity of the snow business in Niseko and Resort business members should not forget about this reality. ----- Niseko Grand Hirafu Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 255cm - Base: 110cm All lifts are normally operating EXCEPT: - Ace Number 1 pair lift (normally rested) - King Number 2 quad lift (normally rested) All courses normally open Lifts scheduled for late operations: - Ace Family quad until 8:30pm - Ace Number 2 Center Four quad until 8:20pm - Hirafu Gondola until 8:10pm - Holiday Number 1 pair until 8:30pm ----- Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 190cm - Base: 117cm All lifts are normally operating ----- Niseko Annupuri Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 180cm - Base: 115cm All lifts are normally operating Lift scheduled for late operations: - Jumbo Number 1 quad until 8:30pm ----- Niseko Village Official snow depth (reported by resort): - Peak: 200cm - Base: 120cm All lifts normally operating EXCEPT: - Country Road Chair (normally rested) Lifts scheduled for late operations: - Annupuri Village Gondola until 8:00pm - Village Express until 8:00pm - Banzai Chair until 8:00pm Niseko Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Tuesday 11th February 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 585cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 61 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 33cm (21st January) November 2019 snowfall 85cm reported on 10 days December 2019 snowfall 207cm reported on 21 days January 2020 snowfall 224cm reported on 20 days February 2020 snowfall 69cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. A cloudy start to the day but increasingly blue skies and some sunshine - looks like it might well end up being a fine day today. There is a chance of some fresh snow again overnight tonight but beyond that some more sun and what looks like a few days of warmer conditions - not just here but throughout Japan. Tomorrow is a national holiday here; I reckon some folk are taking today off to have a long 4-day holiday; good timing with the snow of the last few days. • Nozawa Now: Monday 10th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 320cm Posted on Monday 10th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I didn't need many words yesterday morning. It was my best day of the season so far, easy. The resort was busy, but it's big so there's always places to play. Lots of fresh snow and lovely conditions. Yesterday as of 3pm the resort was reporting 10-19cm of fresh snow across the mountain, and some more since then leaves us with close on another 30cm up top. Things are feeling much more like 'normal' now. Phew!!! I was just looking back at my report from this day last year - the official snow depth on the top Yamabiko area was 320cm; Hikage was at 210cm. Today those same numbers are 265cm and 115cm. So, we're still lower than last year but the last week has really helped us play catch up. If all goes well I should have more snow to report tomorrow as it's due to start falling again this afternoon and overnight tonight. The forecast for Wednesday to Friday looks rather... warm. Let us hope not too much. In the meantime, should be another very fine day to be out on the mountain. Fresh snowfall recorded by resort since yesterday morning: - Yamabiko (1407m): 29cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 20cm - Hikage (660m): 16cm - Nagasaka (615m): 16cm - Karasawa (563m): -cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by resort): - Yamabiko (1407m): 265cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 225cm - Hikage (660m): 140cm - Nagasaka (615m): 115cm - Karasawa (563m): 90cm All lifts normally operating apart from the following lifts: - Utopia pair - Kandahar pair All courses normally open apart from the following courses: - Kandahar - Mukobayashi - Hachiman Nozawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Monday 10th February 2020 Total snowfall at base 320cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (9th February) November 2019 snowfall 4cm reported on 2 days December 2019 snowfall 33cm reported on 5 days January 2020 snowfall 120cm reported on 11 days February 2020 snowfall 163cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. After the more stormy conditions of yesterday, things are calmer and clearer this morning. Some lovely blue sky earlier on, it has clouded over somewhat since then and we are due more snowfall from this afternoon. It is a cold morning. The resort isn't reporting any fresh snowfall since yesterday which is a bit puzzling; it was snowing beyond my report yesterday and I have snow to report. Anyway, conditions should be very good this morning. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan, so it'll be busier than a normal weekday - especially with the nice conditions we have now... • Niseko Now: Monday 10th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 584cm Posted on Monday 10th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The really cold conditions continue, starting the morning with a reading of -12C on my thermometer. Just a thin layer of fresh snowfall to report - ever so slightly over 1cm. So the mountain has not had a reset, first run groomers should be feel good this morning. Did I mention it's really cold still?! That cold looks set to ease off in the second part of the week when Japan as a whole is going to experience a bit of a warmer spell. At the start of the day it looks like the base Ace Family quad is having some issues and not starting the day as normal. ----- It is really pleasing to see other regions of Japan finally getting some proper snowfall. My mind is often boggled when I see some of the nutty amounts of snow that they can sometimes get in 24 hours. Myoko and other areas of Niigata and Nagano, I'm looking at you! I can't remember ever reporting a full 1m in any of my reports. We tend to just concentrate on 'quality' up here in Niseko. Ooooh, controversial! (I'm just kidding). (Sort of). ;) But seriously, I do recommend checking out some of the other reports on this site; it's always and interesting read to see how other regions are doing. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -13.0°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: N 354deg 2.6m/s , -14.2°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: N 4deg 9.3m/s, -16.9. Niseko Village 900m: WSW 1.3m/s, -16.4°. Hirafu 1000m : N 346deg (speed no data) , -17.2°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 344deg 5.7m/s, -14.2°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NE 5m/s. Kamui Cape N 2m/s, 1016hPa, wave 1.3m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 170cm. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flattening out and the mountain base and seas are calm. A moderately strong north wind persists above 800m with, depending on location, 30-50cm of snow drift development. From observation a fracture is occurring at 20cm, however avalanche risk is low. To avoid avalanches from a deep layer do not wait around in the valley bottom. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Be prepared before going out the gates. There is a bit more snow now, but still not that much. Be careful of partially buried trees, if you hook one its an easy broken leg. The low temps continue, take care of frost bite. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. More snow to report this morning with Happo, 47 and Goryu all reporting 20-25cm of fresh snow on their upper areas. Check out the numbers that Cortina are reporting though... 60cm! That sure sounds good. (Though quite a few courses over there are closed at the start of the day as they apparently deal with the snow). Tsugaike Kogen are also reporting 45cm of snow up there so it does sound like there has been a lot of fresh over there. Great news. With a decent layer of snow across the mountains conditions should be excellent this morning, though wind might a factor (and meaning there'll be wind blow stashes in places). At Happo-one, you can now ski back down to the Gondola base via Riesen as the Shirakaba South Side course area is now open. Hurray! And the top Grat quad is on hold. Booo! Good to see the upper official snow depths at Hakuba Goryu, 47 and Tsugaike hit the 2m mark. There's some blue sky appearing in places amongst the clouds right now. • Madarao Now: Sunday 9th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this season 423cm Weather overview Snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Limited to poor Posted on Sunday 9th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . A very good morning from Madarao. Rather limited visibility out there. The great news is that there is also another fine thick layer of snow out there too. The resort is - rather conservatively, I feel - reporting 30cm. I am measuring more than that, I imagine wind has been a factor blowing the snow around. Early reports of some possible delays with some lifts opening. Official snow depths maybe aren't the most exciting of statistics but it is still good to see it rising above 2m this morning at Madarao; Tangram always reports a lower number and they are at 130cm. --- Current operations: Sunday 9th February 2020 - Subject to change Madarao: - All lifts are operating - perhaps some delays due to the heavy snowfall - All areas open - All tree run course open apart from Powder Wave - Official snow depth: 215cm Tangram Ski Circus: - All lifts are operating - Almost all courses open - Official snow depth: 130cm Madarao Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Sunday 9th February 2020 Total snowfall at base 423cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 33 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 59cm (on 6th February) November 2019 snowfall 15cm reported on 4 days December 2019 snowfall 73cm reported on 9 days January 2020 snowfall 188cm reported on 14 days February 2020 snowfall 147cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Madarao.
